I, Robot (2004)
An extremely enjoyable film
I absolutely loved this movie, and plan on seeing it at least once more in the theatre and then buying the DVD. In fact, I wanted to stay right there in my seat and watch it again immediately. It kept me interested from the beginning all the way to the unexpected end. Will Smith was terrific. Certainly not the best movie I have ever seen, but one of the most enjoyable. And one that the whole family can see together. The special effects were awesome, though I could have done without some of the more dizzying camera work. I would love to see a behind the scenes "making of" type documentary to learn more about how everything was done; hopefully this will be on the DVD when it comes out.
I'm not a big fan of sci-fi, but the previews I had seen of this movie are what attracted me to it. When I read the early reviews last week, I almost decided not to see it. I'm so glad I changed my mind. If you're looking for a movie version of Isaac Asimov's robot stories, you'll probably be disappointed. If you're looking for a fun movie (that happens to be about robots) with lots of action and a murder mystery with a few twists, then don't miss this one. And if you're a Will Smith fan like me, well, that's a bonus. Even Will Smith can't save a bad movie (remember Wild, Wild West? - yuck!), but this isn't a bad movie by a long, long shot. I give it an 8 out of 10.
Something the Lord Made (2004)
Absolutely magnificent!
I saw this movie this morning in my hotel room in Washington, DC. I was packing to go home as it was on and just a few minutes into it, I had to stop and just sit and watch. I was so moved by it, that I had to wait a while before I could leave. The tears were just streaming down my face. Later, as I was driving home, I passed an exit on the highway that indicated it was the road that eventually led to "Johns Hopkins University". I almost took that exit, but didn't because I had to get home. But I'm determined to soon make that trip to the University if only to spend a few minutes looking at the portrait of Dr. Thomas. What an incredible story and what an incredible actor Mos is. I do not have HBO at home, so I'm hoping that this movie is released on DVD. If it is, I will be purchasing multiple copies to give as gifts. A wonderful, wonderful story acted out by extremely talented actors.
Definitely, ten stars.
Rat Race (2001)
Funny, funny, funny movie
When I saw this trailer on TV, I thought that this was one movie I could pass up. It looked more stupid than funny. I couldn't have been more wrong. Friends convinced me to go with them to see the preview on Sat. night. Loved the opening credits. Very, very clever. The movie started off a little slow, but it didn't take long for the laughs to start. And they just kept on coming until the end. Favorite scenes are numerous but two I will mention are the radar station and the Barbie museum. And, oh, yes, the cow!!!! The cast was superior and especially brilliant was Kathy Bates as the squirrel lady.
One storyline I didn't think was funny was the one with Wayne Knight. It was too serious a subject for me. Fortunately, it didn't ruin the movie, though.
Would definitely recommend this movie to friends and see it again myself. I rate this movie a 9 out of 10. (If it weren't for the Wayne Knight storyline, I would give it a 10!)
