Now, at lot can and has be said about this movie.
The brilliant acting, the humour, the overtly masculine vibe, the swearing and so on.
But what I want to comment about is the subtle yet quietly present subtext.
What is the subtext this film presents us ?
It's simple, as it is not: what choice of life do we want to take ? Do you want to take ?
This question is at once asked explicitly by Belfort towards the FBI Agent. He asks him about his past when he tried himself to become a stockbroker.
Does he regret it, asks Belfort. To now be a 9-5 FBI Agent, taking the subway home to meet his "mediocre" wife, hinting at the prostitutes, waiting for Belfort in his Yacht.
When the FBI Officer leaves, Belfort provocatively shows up a pack of money. "That's your months salary !", he screams.
For him it's nothing. But at the end, Belfort is in jail and the FBI Agent goes home. But in the subway. Like all normal people.
And what do we want ? A lawful, normal life ? Or an adventurous one, without regard of law and moral ?
Scorsese let's the question unanswered in his typical brilliance.
It's up to the individual viewer to decide.
