Guilty by Association (2003)
I Feel Guilty Just For Watching It
Wow. When I rented this movie, I knew that it might be bad, but I never expected a train wreck like this. It's not so much that the script was boring, but the way the movie was executed was somewhat bizarre. People's behavior (the police's in particular) just didn't make much sense. I expected a certain level of quality given that the movie included Morgan Freeman, but I was unpleasantly surprised. His character wasn't particularly interesting or important. I have a suspicion that in the original script, Lieutenant Redding was a very minor character, but when they landed Morgan Freeman the Lieutenant was given more face time, though no more relevance. If you watch the trailer, it appears that the movie is centered on him. As it turns out, the plot and outcome of the movie would be the same if his character had never existed.
Dark Star (1974)
Unbelievably Dull and Annoying
This is probably the only movie I have ever not been able to make it all the way through. Not only was it annoying and boring, but the low production values made it hard to make out the action and in some cases the dialogue. Avoid this one like the plague.
Super Troopers (2001)
Consistently Entertaining With a Few Glitches
Without a doubt Super Troopers was funny from the beginning to the end. Specifically enjoyable was the way the characters did what we would all like to do to a variety of everyday jerks. My only complaint was that parts of the movie would have been more understandable had certain deleted scenes been left in. I will be on the lookout for more films from Broken Lizard.
The Last Castle (2001)
Morally schizophrenic
The acting in this movie was so good that I almost want to recommend it based on that alone. Unfortunately, the plot suffers from a sort of moral schizophrenia. The director manages to tapdance around the fact that the good guys perpetrate more injustices in a day than the bad guys have in a lifetime. While technically the good guys win, one leaves the theater realizing that everyone would have been better off if they hadn?t. Its worth seeing just to try and puzzle over what message the screenwriter was actually trying to get across.
Spy Game (2001)
Just Plain Dull
The problem with the movie was simply that it wasn't particularly exciting and had no other compensating qualities. The action scenes were nothing special and failed to draw the viewer into the situation. By the end of the movie I was so bored with the protagonists that I was rooting for the bad guys.
My 5 Wives (2000)
One Star for Five Wives
As much as I love Rodney Dangerfield, this was a terrible movie. The plot was kind of a holistic rip off of various movies, but unfortunately they forgot to rip off any good jokes. In addition it was annoying and boring and that's being kind. If you're looking for a good laugh, rent a copy of Private Parts.
Wild Things (1998)
The movie was ridiculous, because of careless writing.
The number of plot twists in this movie, while slightly distracting was not in and of itself a problem. Unfortunately, apparently no one proof read the script to make sure the twists made sense. In one instance a character we believe to be dead is brought back to life. This might have worked if not for the fact that we see her dead with a plastic bag over her head. How was she breathing? Some of the characters behaviors like that of the police detective trying to prove the truth didn't even make sense given that he was in on the conspiracy. The lack of continuity turns an average movie into a joke.
