Les François (2013)
Very French. A bachelor regretting of not having a child.
More than friendship. A bachelor, under a rude exterior, shows humanity and warmth. Meeting a young François, "beur"french of Arab ascent, the old one starts to remember an affair of love he had 20 years previously with one Aicha., who was pregnant when they parted.
But she had a miscarriage , as he discovered later. He shelters the young man and develops affection towards him. At one point he starts imagining that François might be his son , because the latter's mother is also named Aïcha.
Emotion is always there, and also illustration of racial difficulties of cohabitation in France
Worth being seen; we'll done for a T.V. Film.
Dialogues are swift and humoristic.
Eye of the Beholder (1999)
Mortelle randonnée
From the same novel (Eye of the beholder) far better is the french thriller "Mortelle randonnée" (litteraly:deadly runabout") The then very young and beautiful Isabelle Adjani gives a breathtaking and dreadful performance. Announcing the genial (and still as beautiful) actress she is now.
Dialogue by the witty Michel Audiard, and his son .
The deadly run is filmed from the point of view of a private detective (called "l'oeil" ="the eye") hypnotised, for personal reasons , by his bloody subject.
To be seen by all means.
Just released in D.V.D.(I have heard) although issued in 1984 or about.
This Is My Father (1998)
Great.
The catholic Church oppression, mainly on moral and sexual life, is similar to the one lived in French Canada and Quebec province during the same period, but with a little more comprehension and less social tensions due to status. Happily, this oppression ceased with the occurrence of the drastic social changes brought by the 60's, called the "Quiet revolution"
Very touching movie and good description of the evils brought by bigotry. That's why I was so touched by this story. The actress playing Fiona, without being a beauty, is very attractive, and so full of life. By the way the old Fiona is played by an actress who had a good career in French Canada.
La quarantaine (1982)
Nostalgic and touching, as well as philosophical
This movie is partly treating the same themes as "The big chill", with references to social and moral situation in french Canada, after the "Quiet revolution". Like in "The big chill" the whole movie is about a long day and night gathering of about 10 college close friends (la gang) sharing souvenirs, critics of some religious and social beliefs of their youth. As the night unravels, their desillusions and failures comes to surface with a feeling of fear of oncoming end and death, since they are in the second part of their lives. The movie shows great sensibility, as well as joy or pain;very well done, with some lenghts. It worths to be seen and compared to "The big chill"; it supports the comparison.
Un air de famille (1996)
A touching movie
I was moved by the spectacle of this dysfunctional family. In regard to the comment made by Frisouille (France); a Canadian fan of the colorfull side of the popular french language (I am one) can appreciate all the flavor and the meaningfullness of the apparent profusion of the delicious dialogue. The acting is also admirable, by all the actors. Catherine Frot is remarquable and touching even if her character looks "nunuche"; compare with her sparkling performance in LA DILETTANTE.One should see the latter movie-although on a lighter tone-if one liked UN AIR DE FAMILLE.
