An Immigration Love Story
23 March 2020
We have needed to put a face to the immigration issues and injustices that have taken place in our country. One thing missing when we hear some of our leaders speak about immigration is compassion. Not only does this story bring love into the picture, but it paints a picture of humanity.

Above The Rim (And In The Clouds)
23 March 2020
This film was a very inspiring, faith-based story about the love between a basketball team and their coach. We often forget what a connection athletes have with those who coach them, and this is a touching reminder of how sports can help kids grow to understand the importance of teamwork in life.

The Boyz In The Hood Return
23 March 2020
First, I have to mention how underrated Glenn Plummer is as an actor. I've seen even more recent films of his (this film was released in 2001) and he's always captivating. This role as drug dealer Rick Ross (not the hip hop artist) should have won him more recognition than it did. He truly brought some magic to the screen and to this story based on an infamous criminal. Ross was an OG, and so is Plummer.

Such Endearing Characters...Even The Assassin!
16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I began watching this film skeptical about whether it was my type of film as it's not my usual genre. Daphne Wool and Frank A. Cappello drew me into the story immediately. Their chemistry was incredible, as was their joie de vivre...and death. This film is so unique. You will get hooked. The sound torture scene was just beyond cool.

Beautiful Film Noir Centered Around Black History In Hollywood
16 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love films about the early years of Hollywood. This film not only takes us back to those golden years, but it also incorporates civil rights into the mix which gives the story even more life. We often forget what Black actors experienced (and still experience) and how actors were forced into a stereotype. This is a very unique film! Watch it.

A Captivating Taboo Love Story
13 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Although many will say this story doesn't bring anything new to the teacher/student affair storyline that has been retold throughout the history of art, that is an incorrect perception.

These characters seem to really fit. They both feel like "The Other", thus they make a genuine connection.

I was sucked in. The actors very much complimented each other on a very tangible level.

Watch this love story unfold.

Fun LA Romantic Comedy!
13 March 2020
This film is a great date night film. I loved the sincerity and passion of the characters. It was not only a nod to love but also a love story for Los Angeles. It was very relatable and honest. Definitely check it out. It will pull your heartstrings.

Hashtag Nerd Life!
10 March 2020
So Marlo is a super fun character. My initial take of the film was that the filmmakers were fans of "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" as so many of us are. I really loved the tributes to that movie, as well as "Revenge Of The Nerds". We all have a little bit of Marlo in us, so it's always refreshing to root for the nerd. Very cute film and fun cast!

Enjoy Yourself, You're Younger Than You Think
7 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely fell in love with Risa. This documentary was a reminder of how youth is in the mind, and that survival often depends on your attitude about life. Risa survived the Holocaust, lost family, and had what many would call a tragic life, yet she always feels grateful to be alive. She is an inspiration and an absolute force! Meet her. Watch this film.

A Classic BBC-ish Hitchcockian Film
7 March 2020
From the first frame of this film, I was overcome by a feeling that I was watching a BBC mystery that was influenced by Hitchock (certainly a compliment). The main actor playing Jaffy has such a classic British film star aura about him that I could not take my eyes off of him.

If you're into intrigue and suspense, check this film out.

It's The Best Jiu Jitsu Film Around
7 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was incredibly unique as it centered around jiu jitsu and those who participate in the sport. There was a romantic element involved which gave me Karate Kid vibes (I grew up in the 80s and my level of knowledge of the martial arts comes from those films). The actors were passionate and I loved Derrick Fury's energy. He really brought an interesting character to the screen. Watch it if you like the sport!

If Radiohead Made A Japanese Film
5 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There were elements of this film that made me feel as though I was watching a classic Radiohead video...the footage of lights as the camera sped through tunnels, the somber mood music. I was hooked from the first scene. This film is very avant-garde and gorgeous to watch. I was mesmerized by the neon and the colors. The plot had many twists and turns, much like the opening scene. It's an experience...watch it.

Ivy Matheson's Breakthrough Performance
29 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was very well-written which was essential for a film with such a delicate subject matter.

Once Vincent entered the scene and Sarah's mom Nancy pushed them together, I felt a "Lolita"-esque storyline coming on. As expected, audiences will be split on the morality of the film...I think that's the point.

Such an inspiring film about...feet!
27 February 2020
I loved this documentary. Any film in which the filmmaker gets involved so passionate (not giving away spoilers) that they participate in EVERYTHING, I have to give a thumbs up. What I loved best about it is that it demonstrated how vulnerable we are as humans. Our body truly is a temple and our feet keep that temple grounded.

This Indie Film Was The Definition Of Gritty
23 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This film was extremely realistic and had that indie edge that you don't see in regular Hollywood films.

The one actor's insane laugh was so unsettling that I was totally on edge (as you would be watching "The Joker" or a film starring a psychopathic character). I have to say that his character really brought about the feeling of uneasiness and darkness. If you like true crime, you have to check this out.

Falling...For A Visually-Compelling Indie Film
23 February 2020
When I think of independent films, and the freedom they bring for filmmakers, I envision films such as this one. The shots were just stunning and kept to the beat of the script. The score was sexy, and the actors were raw and full of passion.

I highly recommend this film for the visuals alone. It was captivating. Brave filmmaking.

So Many Twists And Turns That I Got Dizzy (In a fun way!)
21 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This indie gem is one of those films that takes me back to thrillers of the 90s such as "Basic Instinct", "Poison Ivy", and "Sliver". There are tensions that bring you into the plot and characters immediately. The twists were just unreal...You find yourself asking, "Does Seth not see what we see?", but then you realize that he does...he's just mentally preparing himself for his next move. Not going to say much more as not to give anything away. Get ready to think about this movie for some time after you watch!

All I Want Is More Indie Films Such As This One!
21 February 2020
If you believe in the importance of ensemble casts, then this film is for you. I've always loved films like "The Anniversary Party" and "St. Elmo's Fire", and this indie gem brings that same flavor. Drew and Mel feel like your next-door neighbors...they are so tangible and real.

Relationships are not easy, nor are making films about relationships, but this one flows seamlessly.

I'll Be Honest...
21 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I am against horse racing. My beliefs about it were confirmed when some of the owners featured talked about how money being all that mattered. They want to win, period.

However, this is an excellent documentary, despite my views on the subject and some of those interviewed. It was non-biased as it explored various sides of the race. We watched the horses behind-the-scenes as they flew on large airplanes. Some of those interviewed admitted, "Not all horses travel well." We see a jockey who loves his horse.

The non-biased view is what sold me. It's emotional and informative. Watch it and form your own opinion about the race.

So Good To See Kim Coles In A Supporting Role!
17 February 2020
This comedy brought many laughs...It reminded me a bit of the original "Boomerang" film starring Eddie Murphy. The Battle Of The Sexes storyline was fun and the characters were intriguing. I wanted to get to know them and spend more time in their worlds.

Thrilling and Emotional Police Drama
11 February 2020
This film grabbed me immediately as soon as police officer Remy hit the screen. He was captivating. We need more stories such as this during a time when accusations of police brutality seem to require our attention. Black Lives Matter responds, activists respond, and only some politicians and people in power respond. It's important that filmmakers respond and tell stories that bring us into the conversation.
