South Park: Dead Celebrities (2009)
Talk about poor writing
This episode is a poster child for a TV show "jumping the shark" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark). For some reason, it contains plot elements parodying The Sixth Sense, alluding to Little Miss Sunshine, and including Zelda Rubinstein from Poltergeist (the small, creepy woman).
It seems the primary reason this episode was produced was because of its inherent controversiality by referencing the deaths of many celebrities. This could have worked... but unfortunately, the jokes fall flat, the plot sucks limp D, and Ike's dialogue is often out of character... even when he's no longer possessed by Michael Jackson. And speaking of Michael Jackson, talk about a hollow reiteration. Yes, the joke where MJ calls others "ignorant" was funny in the first MJ episode. But seeing the joke run into the ground in another episode was pretty unnecessary.
I just hope I never see Rachel Powell or John Frank Rosenblum credited for writing another episode. South Park is better than being controversial for the sake of being controversial.
True Blood (2008)
Vampire romance, sex, violence, drama, murder... but it just falls flat
An interesting premise or world can only take a series so far. In the end, it is characters that make and break a show.
Others may feel something towards the characters, and I've tried, but I just can't seem to care. It feels too much like a soap opera with lame accents.
The writing is cliché' and the dialogue is sloppy. I've watched up to about halfway of season 2 and I have yet to laugh or remember any one moment particularly. Aside from that, there are numerous logical slips within the show concerning the magic and rules of the world. For example, when a human drinks a single drop of vampire blood in the show they trip balls... yet sometimes a human will drink ravenously from a vampire's wrist and not trip at all. More specifically, when Jason drinks a vial of vamp blood he becomes hyper-sexual, yet Sookie does not experience such extreme effects from drinking what appeared to be a greater quantity of vamp blood.
There was a line of dialogue saying that it affects all humans differently, and maybe it has something to do with Sookie as a telepath, but still it just rings false. It often feels like it makes up rules as it goes along.
I'm a lover of the vampire genre so I'm still watching, but I have a like/hate relationship with TB. As I see more episodes, the like seems to grow thinner and thinner...
There Will Be Blood (2007)
There will be boredom.
If this movie did not bore you you have eaten crud every day of your life. You have gotten used to it. You enjoy its gritty texture.
This talkie is about Daniel Day Lewis, an actor. Though it was shot on film, the film is subordinate to an actor. I don't know his character's name. It didn't stick with me. The texture was too gritty.
If your greatest desire is to learn how to be stupid and regarded as genius like DDL than this movie is for you. It's definitely worth a watch. It is basically the most recent update on Solyaris.
If I had been on drugs, or performance stimulants as some call them, I still would not have enjoyed this talkie. How do I know this? I won't give you a clue.
Keep on chewin' the gravel, you'll become "The Thing," a stupid orange rock with a heart of gold. Do it, watch it.
