The Last of Us: Part II (2020)
Wished I Could Love It
The graphics are beautiful and the controls are a good improvement from the previous game, however, I believe the character development of Ellie was severely taken a the wrong way. In the previous game she was likable and Joel was the hero and in Joel's moment of need, Ellie became his hero. In this game Ellie still has some of her charming corks, but is more of the villain. Abby is seen to be the clear villain at the start of the game, but as the player is forced to play Abby and see things from her persecutive, the player beings to like Abby more than Ellie. Having to fight Ellie in the end was the final nail in the coffin for me. I still want to love both Ellie and Joel and Abby.. but none is possible with the way this story was told.
American Underdog (2021)
Good but Also so Close to Being Great
The first and second act needed to be revisit in the writers room. The third at was strongest and while it did connect to the theme throughout, the viewer is so worn out by the last 5+ years of main characters life's that it is difficult to enjoy the pay off. There is a way to make the viewer understand and even feel the weight of the characters life without having for them to walk through each day, each conversation. The way the first and second act was written it laid the weight of the film on Zachary Levi who played Kurt Willams and Anna Paquin who played Brenda Meoni. The majority scenes where filled with heavy dialogue and a wide range of emotions. Zachery Levi, known for his role in "Shazam!" and the series "Chuck", carried the weight with more ease than his counter part Anna Paquin. Anna is known for her character role as Rogue in the "X-Men" movies. Anna's performance was good in parts but in others it felt as if she was reaching for something on the top self and touched it with the tips of her fingers but could not get a grasp on it. These tendencies from both Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn can be seen scattered throughout their screenplays. Their screenplays are getting stronger, but unless they each pay carefully attention to each act and how they relate the other one, the overall story, and the viewer, these talented writers will continue to be just be the "guys that did a bunch of Christian movies."
The cinematography and editing where the most consistently strong. Directing was also good but the Erwin brothers had to make sure they got one of the spin the camera around the characters talking because that will show the energy and that this is a pivotal part of the film shot in.
Dream Horse (2020)
Underdeveloped
This movie could have been so much more. The base storyline could have gone some where and each time that I thought that it could it didn't. I didn't know what was going on. I didn't feel attached to the characters, and every time there was moment it could have been happy or sad I didn't really care.
Zero Chill (2021)
So So Charters
None of the characters have lasting redeeming qualities. You start to begin to like one or consider cheering for one and they backstab each other so hard. The parents are all terrible asking too much of their kids and not teaching them how to act well. The parents will try to have a teaching moment and then fail themselves soon after. Not a feel good show. It is watchable and well made however.
The Lost Husband (2020)
It's Alright
The editing was a little slow and sound design was all over the place. The over all story was interesting, but then it was familiar too. It's definitely a casual watch.
Love, Guaranteed (2020)
So funny
Wow, why all the haters?! This movie is well made and funny! Great for a girls night.
The Hardy Boys (2020)
Great For Older Kids
I love that I can watched this and not have to worry about language and fast forwarding scenes.
