The Whale (2022)
The Whale
The Whale is a movie that demands A LOT from its audience. It demands your sympathy, your time, and your patience. It feels pointless to give praise to Brendan for his performance. He kills it. He yells and stretches out his arm and rips your heart out. The rest of the cast does a good job. The script is pretty decent, but not every line is perfect or great.
The other technical aspects all work together in a powerful way, but I wasn't crazy about the way the movie ended, personally. I felt like I missed something, and the artist choices made ar the end felt a wee bit overdramatic.
Some people are gonna love this one. I thought it was pretty good with an amazing performance at the center.
Inside Job (2021)
Give it a chance!
I watched Inside Job because it was endorsed and produced by Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls. GF is one of my favorite shows of all time, and this show definitely carried over some of that show's energy.
I think this show is being judged too harshly, but it definitely has flaws. I would like to talk about the positive aspects.
Of course, the best character in the show is Raegan. She's a very complex, interesting, and likeable character who changes and evolves. If the show didn't have Raegan, it wouldn't be great.
The show gets better as it goes along, to the point of being very emotional and powerful by the end of the second season.
Give it a chance!
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Beautiful and brutal
I have seen many war films (Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Paths of Glory, etc.) and this is the most visually stunning. The cinematography is mind-blowing, and the music adds so much to the experience.
This movie is also extremely brutal. The violence is almost non-stop, and when the film does give you, and the characters, time to breathe, you know it's going to be short-lived.
Without spoiling anything, the ending is as close to perfect as you can get with a movie like this. The message of the movie is conveyed not by words, but by images, giving the movie a truly timeless feel that transcends language.
In short, give this movie your time and attention. It deserves it.
Nope (2022)
Boring, hilarious, beautiful
Pretty much the entire first hour of this movie is freaking boring. After that, when you get the big reveal, the movie is laugh-out-loud hilarious thanks to its ridiculousness. And then the climax happens. That climax was unbelievable and utterly fantastic. I love this movie.
Stranger Things: Chapter Four: Dear Billy (2022)
The best episode of the show
I just finished the episode and there are tears in my eyes.
Dear Billy is a perfect episode of television.
Everything about this episode is perfect. Every scene accomplish its goal and then some; it's intense, emotional, and extremely captivating. Also, of course, that ending couldn't be better.
Elvis (2022)
Extremely flashy and surface level
I hate to say it, but I checked my watch multiple times throughout this movie. That's not to say it's not entertaining. On the contrary, I would argue that it is extremely entertaining. It was just difficult for me to care about the story and characters. Maybe that's just me.
The Bad Guys (2022)
The Bad Guys is good!
Of course the animation is a massive highlight, and I also enjoyed the story, characters, and some of the plot twists. It's a tad predictable and not incredibly funny but hey! I had a really good time.
Moon Knight (2022)
This is a weird show...
And I kinda love it. It's genuinely bonkers and the last episode put my jaw on the floor. Oscar Isaac is brilliant as the lead, and the action is solid. Give it a chance!
We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021)
Truly unlike anything else I've ever seen...
And that is one of the highest praises I can give any movie. It feels like everything has been done before, but this somehow feels new and special in some way. For that reason alone, I would recommend this to anyone brave enough to step outside of their comfort zone. Im not going to the world's fair.
Severance (2022)
This is brilliant
I can't remember the last time I was so invested in a TV show. I was hooked from the first episode, and constantly impressed with the directing, visuals, acting, and plot developments. It's like a cross between Black Mirror and 1984, but it might be better than both of those works of art. This is truly something special and I COULD NOT be more excited for season 2.
West Side Story (2021)
Pretty amazing
I have not seen the original West Side Story, but I had a blast with this remake. April burg is still one of the best directors working today and this movie proves that with nearly every shot. The acting and dancing is out of this world and the story kept me invested like the whole time. Really great stuff.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Technically very bad but...
Don't Look Up is one of the most fun movies I have seen in 2021. I laughed out loud several times, and the performances are actually great. It was many flaws (I'm looking at you original corny song), but many merits. Watch it and form
your own opinion.
Mulan (1998)
It's solid
Mulan has plenty going for it. A few great songs, solid animation, several cool scenes, and sharp writing. Still, by the end it all feels very slight and the bad guys are beat too easily. The dragon is sort of funny.
What If...? (2021)
Kinda dumb
What If has plenty of good ideas and plenty of bad ones. The animation is quality but some of the voice acting is pretty terrible. As a Marvel fan some of the stuff really annoyed me. Still, it could be great.
Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie (2002)
Good enough
As far as animated musicals go, Jonah isn't too bad. It's got some great songs but the rest of the movie falls a little flat.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
It hits
This is different. It's not extremely funny. It's Dave saying things that he personally needed to say.
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
More of this please!
It's true that not every episode is gold, but there are plenty of good ideas here and I am all for good ideas! Some really outstanding episodes and great animation!
Tôkyô monogatari (1953)
Hard-hitting drama
This right here is a movie made to make you feel something by the end. It took a while for me to get invested but once I did it was well worth the wait.
Ida (2013)
Black and white and beautiful
Ida is a really beautiful film on a technical level. The story also has a lot of heart and depth, but I didn't love this movie. Just not my thing I guess.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
Very nice
Hachi didn't blow me away, but it didn't have to. It's a really nice, very sad movie that does what it's supposed to do. Good!
Dear Evan Hansen (2021)
People need to chill
This is not the worst movie ever made. In fact, I would argue that it is a great film with a few VERY serious flaws. Still, it made me cry.
Behind the Curve (2018)
Lol
This documentary is absolutely preposterous. I laughed out loud multiple times. It's pretty bad.
The Elephant Man (1980)
This is a movie movie
The Elephant is an extremely high quality film. The cinematography and story telling is purposeful. The acting is excellent. Great movie.
Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
Kung Fu Panda the second
It's a good sequel. The original is really great, and this just doesn't match up. The story and villain are very good.
20,000 Days on Earth (2014)
Not for everybody
I'm not a huge Nick Cave fan, but I was very impressed with this documentary. It's secular and spiritual at the same time.
