Little Women (2019)
Enjoyable movie
So, an Oscar nomination for the movie, I definitely had to catch this in cinema as it had just been released in Malaysia and well, I can imagine why this movie was nominated. The movie revolves around four sisters in which each of them are trying to make a life on their own without the need of having to marry a rich husband. The main character, Josephine "Jo" March is where the movie really revolves around at its core where she is an author whom is trying to prove to the world her true potential in terms of writing as the movie takes place during the Civil War and society is more interested in reading stories which brings joy rather than the harsh reality of life. The movie has a few side plots revolving the other three sisters but that's something I will comment about later in the review.
To get things out of the way this is sort of a feminist movie; BUT hod your horses there before you start rolling your eyes or something, this is a realistic take on feminism I feel, there are male characters that aren't bad guys or some evil villain or lazy husband whom forces his wife to work because he doesn't want to; no. In fact, this is a movie where women despite the deficits and general societal stigma within the period of the movie strive for change in their life by putting in continuous effort rather than playing the victim card consistently, they actually put themselves out in the world and attempt to prove that women can do something other than just being a housewife and stuff. Usually I'd roll my eyes the moment they mention that it is a pro-feminism movie which I have no problem with feminism whatsoever but I do have a problem with delusional feminism where the victim card is consistently played and it just gets tiresome at some point hearing that guys are bad all the time.
Yes, the acting now this is a very yes (English left the room for a second there) but in all honesty, everyone does a fine job in this movie and I didn't even know Meryl Streep was in the movie. The standout stars of the film are of course Saorise Ronan (Jo March) and Timothee Chalamet (Laurie Lawrence). These two were simply incredible in this film and it could also be due to the fact that their characters and the relationship between them is the soul of the movie. They hit the required emotional notes during some intense scenes and when it's just pure joy and dancing, you can feel their on screen chemistry is what really sells their friendship in the movie.
This movie won the award for best costume design which I don't really care for the most part or know what is good or bad costumes in terms of dresses but, yeah, it must be something special if that were the case; but I can comment that the attire to the buildings it felt as though you were sucked into the period the movie takes place. However, the cinematography was wonderful especially in one scene where I found memorable in particular as it shows off the green countryside and I just found the sense of scale compared to the character within the particular moment quite interesting; plus, it was just a beautiful view.
Now, on to the negatives. This movie adapts a back and forth time jump where one takes place in the current time and another 6 years prior to the events that take place. This method was indeed an excellent way to show the contrast between the simplicity of the teenage period as compared to adulthood. However, these transitions were occurring rather frequently and despite the movie,s effort to show you the differences through the colour coding whereby the past seems more radiant and glowy whilst the current time seems more dull and gloomy, it was difficult to follow at times and there was a scene in particular which was important within the film but due to these time jumps, it sort of pulled down the emotional impact within the film.
Another issue I has was with the side plots as I found myself being uninterested or not as interested when the story revolved around the other three sisters, true, the movie needs these plots to ensure that the audience are emotionally invested with the other characters hence, the reason for these characters to have these stories of their own in the background. But, I just found Saorise Ronan's character the most interesting in the movie.
All in all, this was an enjoyable movie and well, people were complaining as to why Greta Gerwig was not nominated as best director, this is the obvious reason why, not saying she is a bad director or I have some hidden agenda on female directors, I really can't be bothered if the director is a male or female just give me a good movie; that's all I really want.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)
Nothing new but all fun if you like sonic
My Rating:
6.7/10
What seemed like heading for sure disaster has proven itself to be a rather enjoyable movie. So, a Sonic movie where its target audience is children but it does not forget that it must cater towards the older audience as many of the Sonic fans are probably above the age of 20 by now. Well, this isn't an amazing movie but it isn't a bad movie either. It's just, good. I'd say that it is just above the recent Detective Pikachu movie. It has a generic plot, with close to none plot twists.
There isn't much to say about this movie but I was surprised that James Marsden was willing to take up this gig as I believe that he has quite a talent in acting; but then again I've not seen enough movies with him in it to be a judge of his range. However, the chemistry between Sonic and Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) really feels natural and this is mainly due to the dialogue which is cute. Jim Carrey is Jim Carrey at his well craziest and it is an absolute joy to watch him go nuts with his character.
I believe they do these characters justice with each character as they are not boiled down or simply some form of studio interruptance in the movie so that it has some form of SJW message. It's just a joy to watch honestly.
In the end, the movie was pretty fun and I mean do go watch it, I think the jokes were pretty clever too even though they were for a younger audience, I believe fans of this character would be happy with the portrayal of the character and the design because, my gosh, what were they thinking with that 'original' design.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Just watch for the action scenes
So what once was a Bird of Prey centered title for the film, after a certain rebranding by WB today, the title suggests that this is a Harley Quinn centered film rather than a team up which is indeed rightfully so. This movie completely centers around Harley Quinn and the team up is left until the final huge fight scene in the movie. So, basically the movie is about Black Mask trying to obtain a diamond from a child whom stole it from him and Harley Quinn becoming a lone wolf rather than having to rely on the Joker and that's about it.
First off, I must praise the main actress, Margot Robbie I think she is amazing as Harley Quinn which indeed is true as the best part of Suicide Squad was her performance. I'm here to say that she brings the psycho to the table and delivers a really good performance here. Other than that, Ewan Mcgregor's performance was fun for the most part of the film but I feel that his performance was let down by the writing department whom failed to really bring his character to life as his character is so one-dimensional and in the end he's just a douchebag without any real reason.
And of course, the best part of the movie, the fight scenes whereby they had the John Wick team to assist them with the fight choreography and it does absolutely show in the movie. The police heist vent that takes place within the movie is absolutely spectacular and just all around gorgeous to look at. It is literally bursting with colour which brings about quite a spectacle when you think about bringing a gymnastic sort of character to a fight scene with vibrant colours.
The problem I have with this movie is that the plot is nothing too amazing, but, the movie is plot driven and that's a problem right there. The side characters, well, I've never read the comics or what not but basically the others excluding Harley herself don't really have enough character building for you to really feel or like them. The pacing of the movie is also another issue I had with it whereby the movie tried to formulate the Deadpool-isc time jump that they had going on in the first movie and it didn't really go out that well as the time jumps are at often used to introduce a side character's backstory or well it takes you from a cool scene in which the case would be the bank heist scene whereby they just stopped the momentum of the scene and cut back to a time before, which is yet another issue I had because the best part of the movie is indeed the fight scenes.
All in all, this is an enjoyable film and well, I went into this movie with no expectations whatsoever so, I didn't experience the joyful disappointment of Justice League. But yes, this movie has a few issues with it but hey, props to those intending to do something wacky, but just seriously, at the same time do think of the movie's pacing, that's really important.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Joy, pain, and love
A quick overview on what this movie is, well it is indeed a satire comedy regarding the Nazi regime taking place towards the end of the war. This is such a heartfelt movie with clever humour that hits you right at the core due to the of course one and only Taika Waititi. However, at it's core it tells a story that I think has been a trend these days which is an anti-war movie which doesn't shove it in your face like a certain Maleficent: Mistress of Evil did but instead it shows it through the lens of a child and the effect it has on the people around the child.
So, beginning with the acting, I think everybody absolutely nailed their role within the movie and they were all incredibly outstanding and this includes those given supporting roles within the movie. However, the spotlight is on the three main characters which are Jojo Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis), Elsa Korr (Thomasin McKenzie), and Rosie Betzler (Scarlett Johannson) whom were all well flashed out characters in which the incredible screenplay by the director/actor, Taika Waititi together with their incredible acting talent gives the audience an opportunity to love these characters where each significant moment within the movie provides an impactful impact whilst experiencing this movie through and through. Roman Griffin Davis to me is a rising star in the movie industry and with so much talent at such a young age, he is definitely one to watch in the future. Furthermore, Thomasin McKenzie whom starred in another movie I watched, The King, was also great in the film but just in case you have not seen the later trailers, I shall stop there regarding her role within the movie.
Another thing which is kind of related to the acting but not really would be the chemistry amongst the main stars which brings a heartfelt performance to the screen. Shockingly, you actually grow to have a liking towards a certain Sam Rockwell towards the end of the movie which is something odd as he portrays a nazi. But hey, that shows the power of screenwriting and amazing characters.
Another thing I adored about this movie is obviously, the cinematography, this movie looks gorgeous, especially the colour gradient in every scene; from the cozy colours within the confines of the house, to the beautiful coulouful town of well Praque to be fair but yes. It's just so well filmed. A scene in particular that I grew a fond off is the scene whereby Jojo looks through what is a cardboard cutout and I thought that scene looked beautiful.
All in all, the movie is really funny with some hits at the Nazi ideology and how ridiculous they were, I believe that the best way to show that you do not fear an individual is by making fun of them as nobody is scared of an individual that is a joke to everyone in the room; which I think is what Taika Waititi mentioned within an interview he did regarding the movie but I can't seem to find the quote but yes, this statement is absolutely correct and this movie does not deserve the bashing it got from certain critics in which this is the same issue many had when it came to critics condemning Joker.
So, yet again a well deserved Oscar award to Mr. Taika Waititi, it is an amazing movie with a really good adapted screenplay whic technically brought me to tears a couple of times. Just pure good stuff.
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Mo Michael Bay, mo problem
Just a disclaimer, I have not watched the previous two movies for this franchise and simply went into this movie looking for some pure entertainment and I am proud to say that that was exactly what this movie delivered. I believe that this movie was good and this was mainly due to the fact the Michael Bay was not the director of the movie in which I'm usually one to back him but after watching 6 Underground and Transformers The Last Knight, I just can't trust this guy even for mindless fun anymore. But yes, this movie was surprisingly really good and a fun time in the cinema.
The chemistry between Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is the major factor as to why this movie is funny, they simply have good on screen chemistry which is what a buddy cop movie requires to succeed. The acting is serviceable for the movie too however, there is one scene in particular where I thought Will Smith's acting was really good and this occurs whilst his character is trying to persuade Martin Lawrence's character, Marcus Bennett to not quit and I felt an emotional impact within that scene which is something I did not expect coming into a comedy/action movie.
On another hand, the action sequences were done really well and yet again, thanks to the fact that Michael Bay was not the one directing the movie, the action sequences did not have 60 cuts from 300 different angles as every Michael Bay usually has but it flows extremely well where cuts aren't as regular as you would aspect. During the final huge 'battle' sequence, it was simply jaw-dropping beautiful to see and I can't really explain it but it was extremely stylistic and it blew my mind while I was watching this movie.
As for the plot, well, there isn't anything incredible about it, it's a serviceable plot for what the movie sets up to achieve but let's be honest here, nobody goes to these sorts of movies expecting a thought provoking or life changing experience, well, at least I don't.
All in all, this is a good time in the cinema but there isn't anything spectacular to it or anything but it sure is a good time in the cinema.
The Garden of Evening Mists (2019)
Exceeded My Expectations
As a Malaysian myself, it was odd watching such a well made film; in fact I would go as far as to say that I am equally astonished and blown away by this movie as it was just so darn good. Well, the movie has been called a heartbreaking love story, although that is true in a certain manner, I think the more proper branding of the movie would be self-healing.
Firstly, I must acknowledge the themes thrown around in the movie, and to me personally it would be the anger and the hatred towards the Japanese post WW2, and as an individual whom has grown up knowing that Japan were known as some of the most respectable and polite individuals on the planet, I found it hard to understand the hatred that was shown towards them still amongst the Chinese community and after viewing this movie I can say that I can kind of see the anger and resentment felt towards them still. But yes, as mentioned before this movie is about self-healing so in the end, we can't continuously allow the past define the way we see life or how we treat others; sure, there are some few rotten apples here and there but the sample size is simply unsuitable for us to judge an entire community based on the few experiences that we have lived through. Thus, the importance of love, mercy and grace.
Okay, on with the praises I have regarding this movie. Cinematography is incredible, my gosh what a beautiful movie. However, I believe that it is so mainly because of the location the movie was shot too and these scenes revolving around the vast environment of Cameron Highlands aren't exactly artistic shots but the imagery within the Japanese house where the garden is located is absolutely stunning.
Although the movie looks stunning, I must bring attention to a certain scene within the movie where the scene could've been better shot which is the scene where the main character, Teoh Yun Ling ponders upon her sister's photograph and the scene plays out in such a way that it felt unnecessary to have a close up on the picture again as it had been done in the earlier part of the movie and the next cut is of her reacting to that picture. This probably isn't an issue for the vast majority but it felt unnatural to me and it stood out too much to my liking. Furthermore, the first 15 minutes of the movie felt choppy to me, this could've been a personal nitpick.
The acting on the other hand, this is a difficult one to comment upon as it was good but as this movie was labelled as a romantic movie, I went in expecting some serious chemistry between Teoh Yun Ling (Angelica Lee) and Nakumuara Aritomo (Hiroshi Abe) and since this movie focuses on the pain Angelica Lee's character, Teoh Yun Ling experiences during the Japanese invasion of Malaya during WW2, there is constant tension between the two characters due to her prejudice against the Japanese people. But looking past all that, I must say that she did a wonderful job portraying a strong character but at the same time broken, she absolutely nailed all the emotions required in each particular scene and her performance truly nailed this movie home and even brought me to tears.
All in all, this was a heartbreaking movie, I went in with some form of expectation after seeing the number of awards it was nominated for at the 56th Golden Horse awards and this movie definitely delivers and this is a movie worth catching in the cinema.
Underwater (2020)
Just Pure Fun
My Rating:
6.5/10
A January movie, the dumping ground of Hollywood studios each and every year where at times there are a few surprises here and there but for the most part, it's usually just trash. Underwater is by far from a January movie, I went into the theater with no expectations whatsoever and to my surprise, this movie delivers on various notes and is surprisingly incredibly entertaining.
Well, the plot is simple, you have seen it a hundred times with movies such as Aliens and even the Meg in terms of the underwater sea creature element which was honestly a fairly enjoyable but all in all a pretty bland movie. But yes, the movie wastes no time with character building and cuts to the chase thus, I would say that this movie is entirely carried by the atmosphere created and also the acting. It is definitely not a story driven movie nor is it one with much character building moments.
Previously as I believe many of us have, the only movie I have seen Kristen Stewart act in was in the Twilight series; yes, THAT series and yes, I have heard from others that she was actually a good actor with her taking part in various indie films which aren't shown in Malaysia. So, I must really praise her acting here, it is nothing iconic whatsoever but her ability to communicate the sense of fear and dread that she is feeling whilst crossing the ocean's floor is truly mesmerizing in a weird sense, and this is also due to the director, William Eubank as I believe, the acting was above par for a movie such as this., so all credits to him for getting the best out of the actors with what they were given to work with.
Given the estimated budget of this movie ranging from 50-80 million USD budget, and where this movie is intended to take place, a thousand leagues under the sea, they did an incredible job with the budget given. The CGI is fairly serviceable and believable, and this is mainly due to the fact that the entire movie takes place at such low lighting depths where the SFX team were able to hide the CGI in the darkness. There are indeed certain scenes where you could notice the obvious CGI which is the walk on the sea bed where there is the whole floating heads issue whilst they are in their suit. Kind of the issue certain individuals had when the Iron Man suits became more dependent on CGI rather than actual costumes.
There's nothing much to talk about for this movie, it is a fun one where certain scenes will leave you at the edge of your seat. with a runtime of 1 hour and 35 minutes, this is a pretty good movie and I would recommend this movie for those whom want to fill that 'I want to watch a good January movie' void that they have going on.
1917 (2019)
Experiencing War in a Realistic Manner
This movie certainly lives up to the hype and expectation given by the fact that they won the award for best drama at the Golden Globes last year. However, to say that this movie is better than Joker is well, I don't buy that as Joker has a better narrative and cinematography, but that is just my opinion. Firstly, I would like to make things clear that this is a movie about the humane side of war and the emotional toll it has on those involved within these wars and at its core, the human spirit to survive.
The actor that absolutely stood out to me within this film is definitely George Mackay whom I have never heard of or have ever seen him in many major films before this and it is quite shocking to say that as he is indeed a talented actor whom in my opinion, if not for his acting capabilities, this entire movie would fall apart as this movie is more of a character driven movie rather than one that relies heavily on the movie's narrative. He manages to convey his character's emotions through his body language and all credit to director Sam Mendes too whom chose to direct a movie that requires the audience to observe and pay attention to the character's rather than having the character announce his emotions as seen in various movies these days. For me personally, the stand out scene would be the scene involving George Mackay's character in an army truck and it is truly such a powerful and emotional scene.
Speaking of characters, I felt the use of cameos from major stars such as Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and etc unnecessary as scenes with them last for approximately a minute or two and these scenes sort of stand out like a sore thumb in the movie as you know that it's just a cameo and these major stars are there for the sake of being there to provide the movie some extra dressing. Some may love this but I felt that these scenes were unnecessary and these actors could've been put to better use.
As for the most talked about point regarding this movie, this movie is edited in such a way that makes it seem like a one-shot. The entire experience was amazing and it draws you into the brutal minute-by-minute environment of war; from the casual conversations between soldiers to the nasty action sequences. I was wondering if all the events would take place within the movie's 2 hour runtime but they managed to pull off the passage of time absolutely brilliantly without having to break the one-shot effect they were really gunning for.
The cinematography was absolutely brilliant too, my gosh, this is a beautiful movie. I kid you not, each frame of this movie can be a screensaver and it is indeed an awe dropping experience. From the colour gradient used which is generally a sort of dull colour to depict the gritty environment of the battlefield to a beautiful flame within what is a dull environment (Not too experienced when it comes to colour gradients so this is the best I can do to explain it, sorry).
As previously mentioned, I now shall comment upon the movie's narrative. Well, it isn't anything new to be honest which is where I feel the movie severely lacks as the end goal is certain and you can kind of guess how the movie is going to turn out regardless of the movie's emphasis on the race against time to deliver the message. Furthermore, I did not feel much tension during the movie as I hoped I would and this is mainly due to yet again, the predictability of the movie's endgame.
Generally, at the end of the day, this is w a must watch. It may not be my pick for the Golden Globe award but my gosh, this is truly a cinematic experience you should not miss out on. Besides, it's January, all the movies out now can be missed out on and you probably wouldn't regret missing it; but this, this you cannot miss.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Absolute Brilliance
It isn't every day that you come across a movie like this, a practically flawless one in my opinion actually. I have nothing but praise for director Bong Joon-Ho and I can now see why this movie has received much hype and praise over the past few months. This is a movie which not only shows a contrast between the rich and the poor but also the human condition and the will to survive. Don't worry, this review won't have any spoilers whatsoever.
To begin this praise train I have to first and foremost praise the acting of lead actor Choi Woo-shik whom delivered an incredible performance throughout this movie and brings a sort of charm during the first act of the movie.Another standout would be Kang-Ho Song that remains a recurring cast in the movies directed by Bong Joon-Ho and his consistency in the various movies he has directed absolutely shows why the director has so much trust in his acting capabilities.
A transition scene in particular which occurs at the end of the second act is really a beauty in itself and the transitions were absolutely stunning and beautiful which brings me to the cinematography and movie editing of the movie. The pacing was consistently on point where everything, even the change in tone is seamless. Along with the cinematography in which this movie is beautifully shot from the aesthetically pleasing rich kid house down to the semi-basement house in the suburbs.
Furthermore, another beauty of this movie will definitely be the score which was composed by Jung Jae-il which manages to convey emotion and tension during the second and third act of the movie which is something truly remarkable. Through music there are also hints to the sudden sort of change in tone I shall say which begins within just about the middle of the second act of the movie.
The plot of this movie is something I've yet to see over the many years of watching movies and this is where praised should be absolutely given for this ambitious plot where I could simply say, nothing written and the direction of this movie which keeps you guessing as to what this movie really is about should you dive deeper than the way the movie was promoted within the trailers shown for it. It is nothing short of extraordinary as you are unable to really see the change in tone coming.
At the end of the day, this movie questions how the rich could help the poor and in fact portrays mankind's strive for survival which in this case would be a better life in such a way that it isn't in your face. Plus, by the end of the movie, you really realise there is no real protagonist or antagonist, just people. People trying to live a happier life.
Thus, making Parasite the perfect movie where I am unable to criticise a single thing in this movie. Director Bong Joon-Ho has definitely earned my trust in his artwork and should to some extent be placed amongst the greats.
21 Bridges (2019)
Nothing Fresh
This is a movie where the company has no faith in the director which is indeed a warning sign as we can see what happened to Moral Engines. This is a movie produced by the Russo brothers, not directed, not written by them. You could simply skip this movie if you were really looking forward to this one in the New Year but you could certainly enjoy this movie too if you're trying to fill your time.
The pros
Chadwick Boseman manages to do his best with what was written which isn't much to be honest but he does well commanding the screen and in a sense driving the audience's interest in his character which is a two dimensional character.
Another thing would be the soundtrack, Henry Jackman's unique style of music when it comes to thrillers which presents us a some sort of Captain America: The Winter Soldier-isc soundtrack which to some degree drives the action in this movie in certain moments.
The cons
This movie suffers from a poor script which ends up bogging down this movie which in turn means, this is a movie where you've seen this plot recycled multiple times over the previous decade and it brings nothing new to the table. Hence, making this movie a highly predictable movie.
Unlike a recent movie, Knives Out, which has a fairly predictable plot too, this movie fails to excell in aspects such as its cinematography or even the action sequences. A truly disturbing sequence of shots would be within the first 10 minutes of the film where they have a minute long sequence showcasing Manhattan's bridges, a truly unecessary shot.
Furthermore, there was an attempt to provide a heavier backstory for the antagonists to allow us to relate and care for them in some manner but that absolutely went down the drain due to the manner the information is thrown at the audience; in the form of exposition.
Spies in Disguise (2019)
Intriguing Concept But,
An intriguing concept but it's just enough to pass the time at the cinema.
The movie delivers in regards of soundtrack, voice cast and in some regards, certain animation sequences. The humour within this movie takes affect when it starts pokes fun at modern day culture and manages to pull it off swiftly. By the looks of it, the movie aims to target the likes of children and young teens and probably would give the adults just an enjoyable movie. The movie also attempts to make certain edgy jokes to appeal to an older audience but other than that, it's a movie mainly made for well children and teenagers. The main message of the movie which is anti-war is also a heartwarming one which deserves some praise.
However, besides all the initial glamour thrown at you within the first 10 minutes you would soon be immersed enough to look past it's initial facade. The movie suffers when it comes to the plot which is something we have seen over a hundred times in other movies and of course a villain that isn't just bland but one without any real motivation other than an event that has occurred in the past which doesn't really hit you as the villain is indeed a boring one.
As a whole, I found myself enjoying the movie but with the given voice cast, the movie could've done a lot more. But then again, I'm not really the target audience of the movie so maybe you will enjoy the movie more than I do.
The Mandalorian (2019)
A Well Thought Out Series That Is Worth Watching
The season just wrapped and my gosh what a blast it was following this series every week. First off I would like to get the negatives out of the way in which what is and the most obvious thing is, filler episodes, true, they serve the ultimatum of the series but the issue is such that these side characters are given approximately 7 minutes of screentime within that episode and then doesn't show up until 5 episodes later on. I understand that it is the way it is supposed to be but the series really dipped upon reaching episode 4 and 5 and it almost lost my interest. One episode that I must criticize would be episode 5 where the side characters were simply just annoying and they didn't even show up in later episodes. Furthermore, the acting was subpar within that episode and the episode ended up feeling like a CW DC tv show. I still stand by my initial comment where I stated that the initial episodes for this series would've been a lot nicer if they were longer as it would've allowed the audience to really settle into this world which is very much the Star Wars universe but it is fairly grounded as compared to a fleet of planet killing star destroyers.
On with the positives now, Pedro Pascal absolutely killed it as the main where he is forced to rely on his body language and his intonation when he speaks to convey emotion. Another was that for the main side characters that got through up until episode 8, they were really interesting, could be more interesting but hey, I'll take this over the rise of skywalker on any given day. And yes, this is a far more satisfying view compared to the rise of skywalker (at least the story is linear). Baby yoda is adorable, I want a toy of him he is so cute and smol and fluffy and old? Uh, weird species but yeah. The cgi is pretty good for what it's worth actually and I didn't expect it to be of that high quality judging by the fact that well it's a tv show well a streamed series to be exact but yeah. Another strong positive would be that each character has a well thought out arc where the mandalorian starts to care and trust, a rebel shock trooper getting back up or even a yeah you get what I mean. Plus, the season finale was amazing.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Not good but yet, satisfying.
Well, this is certainly a disappointing ending to the new trilogy but a charming ending to the end of the Skywalker saga. I am impressed with how J. J Abrams managed to switch back to the vision he first foresaw for this new trilogy. This movie is beautifully shot and the soundtrack is great and the cast is great too. Other than that, the movie's plot is well meh and the reveal of Rey's history is also dubious as it is kinda forced due to the fact that Rian Johnson changed stuff in The Last Jedi. I could sit here and complain about this movie and its various flaws as honestly this is a pretty bad ending for this trilogy. I believe that it is the high table's fault or whoever that is in charge of the whole new trilogy where they decided that it would be a fantastic idea to write the story as they go and not with an end goal in mind before The Force Awakens was even out. You can clearly see the dividing vision between J. J Abrams and Rian Johnson and I don't hate The Last Jedi it certainly is a bold movie in terms of a movie but as part of a movie franchise, it doesn't really work. But hey, if you've followed this saga since The Phantom Menace all the way to The Last Jedi, you'll be happy with this movie or well at least satisfied as it hits you with nostalgia and etc but if you came for the new trilogy ok, well it's okay. It is an okay movie, nothing spectacular. And if you hated The Last Jedi, well I'll call this movie a spit in Rian Johnson's movie and vision as it is mainly the clearing up of the collateral damage done in the previous movie.
