Divos! (2020)
Not a 10 but definitely not a 1
Anyone rating this a 10 is obviously a friend(or member) of the production. Anyone rating it a 1 is obviously a hater. It's a pretty average low budget indie. The story is predictable, but so are most of these high school angst ridden comedies, so it's hard to criticize that. It's the same recipe we've all seen before. Matt Steele does a wonderful job as the main character, Ricky Redmond, which is the bright spot for this movie. The production value is meh, not great but not bad. The stunt casting, which is typical in low budget indies, was more indicative of the budget as they appeared to scrape the bottom of the D List barrel for small turns throughout. The dark spot for this movie is the so called "actor" playing Mr. Aubrey. The only thing I believe when he is on the screen is that I've never felt more sorry for a pair of pleated khakis. This is becoming more of a trend in indie films with executive producers paying for roles and fake press to perpetuate this ruse that they are professional actors. Most will tell you that this tactic is a great way to lose credibility for your movie and for what? So you can fool a handful of friends and family that don't know any better? Seems like an expensive hobby. Anyway, I think this is a safe option to drop a few bucks to stream for the family.
Riot (2015)
WTF?
No no no, just NO. I can't even begin to, ok, its supposed to be a comedy I think, but its funny for reasons that were not intentional. I wasted enough time on this movie, two hours I'll never get back. This will be my shortest review ever. Hard NO.
Infancia clandestina (2011)
Grab your popcorn and your tissue.
I stumbled across this during quarantine and I'm really glad I did. It was not what I expected, but often times thats a good thing and this film was no exception. If you can get by the political aspects of the film, something I try to do, and just watch it for the story and archs of the characters, it is quite powerful. If you choose to research the political aspects of the film, I encourage you to do so.
I'm not going to single out any performances as they were good-not great- however they were more than enough to fuel this magnificent script. I'll mark the production value with the same mark as the cast, but again, more than enough there to carry you on this journey.
You will cry, you will cheer, the absence of either would make me question your humanity. Give it a go!
Getting Grace (2017)
Heartfelt performances coupled with strong story telling
I was pleasantly surprised with this film. It was funny as I'd hoped it would be, but it was also very genuine and heartfelt. I thought the performances were spot-on, in particular Madelyn Dundon, who plays the title character. She's definitely a new comer to keep your eye on. The pacing is good, it helps you remain invested in the story. Not the best production value, but that's typically a tough get in an indie film, but this entry is better than most. Congrats to all that were a part of this film.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Pleasantly surprised
They took your typical superhero fare and made it quite interesting. No spoilers, but seriously, who on the planet hasn't seen it yet. All the elements you'd expect were there, but I was more impressed with how they wrapped up the journey for these characters.
Snatchers (2019)
Simply well done
I was a little apprehensive when I screened this. Wasn't sure what to think but I was not disappointed at all. It's a fun ride, not meant to be taken seriously at all. The production team embraces the lunacy and the director/actors execute the formula flawlessly. Plenty of laughs to be had here. Even though the premise is outlandish as its meant to be, it still has a coming to age feel about it that's easy to like. I think Mary Nepi is worth following, she's wonderful.
Creative Control (2015)
Like eating a plain croissant for dinner
No substance and poor performances left me feeling very unsatisfied. The film tries too hard be artsy, but falls short on even being edgy enough to be pretentious. A great example of poor writing, poor direction and poor execution by the actors. I really wanted to give this film a fair shot, was actually looking forward to seeing it, but it just fell so short on so many levels.
