Cruella (2021)
What a surprise!
Watched this film on a Friday evening after a rough week. Looked for some simple and light entertainment. Wasn't really expecting a lot.
Got totally blown away. This is beautifully made, was written fantastically and acted liked their lives depended on it.
Excellent!
Barbarella (1968)
LSD
That is the only thing I could think of when seeing this movie: "LSD". They must have been on it big time while making it. It is actually so bad it becomes unmissable. You must see it to believe it.
Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! (2015)
Live changing...
I've rated over 1000 movies and this is the second worst I've seen in my whole life. The worst was "Turbulence 3", which I gave one star.
The only reason I gave this two stars instead of just one, is for the impressive line of characters the creators of the movie were able to assemble.
Apart from that, this movie was utter and complete rubbish, beyond believe. Would I recommend it? Oh hell yes, you won't believe what you see!
Mind blowing triavia: Donald Trump was supposed to play the president in this move but bailed out because he went to go play for the "real" president. This probably explains a lot what he been going on recently: he's following the wrong script...
Serenity (2005)
Very nice package but light what's inside
*** Contains a lot of spoilers - don't read if you have not seen the movie yet ! ***
I saw this movie without any knowledge of the series or whatsoever - I didn't even know there was a series around it. So, basically, my viewing was as "virgin" as it could get.
Overall, this movie has a very nice package: the camera-work is excellent, as is the editing, the music, and everything that comes with it. The whole world that is created, could be very realistic. The special effects are very well done and, thanks God, are there to support the movie (not like many other movies *are* the movie). In general, a very nice package absolutely worth looking at - much better than your average movie.
However, apart of that, the movies is full of clichés and has a very poor and messy plot. It could be me, but it took me 15 minutes to understand more or less what it going on and there are far too many assumptions or plot changes that you just need to accept or try to understand as a viewer. For me, that seriously brings down a movie.
And then the clichés... Boy, it looks like every great SF movies comes around and get mixed with other terrible clichés that all end in a happy, predictable end (yech) ! Over the top ? Hey, our big boy gets shot in the leg by an arrow, and (being a hero), pulls out the arrow and walks on. The captain struggles with his demons of the past. Our team gets stuck in a hopeless fight and gets saved at the very end while our hero fights a final fight against the bad guy (which is won by our hero, of course). Their friends get killed by the bad guys, but the leader is found alive, just to be able to speak a couple of final words before he dies in the arms of his friends. Yawn...
Ahd then the homages to other movies (at least that's what I think it is, although I'm not sure it was intended like that): a "car" race on the surface of a planet (Star Wars), a girls that fights 10 man at the same time with wonderful moves (The Matrix), Zombies that come to get you (a couple of hundred other movies, but reminded me a lot of "28 days later" here), a fight in a bar on an outer planet (hey, Star Wars again !), the bad guy that sees the cause of our hero is a good one and changes his mind (a couple of thousand other movies), and so on, and so on...
It is really kind of a shame, since this movie could have been *much* better if more attention was given to all this.
Overall: a very nice package but with very light content.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
This movie is a diamond
Don't let the critics fool you - this is the best movie in a verrry long time...
However, it does not come for free: you'll have to do some effort for it. Leave your popcorn at the entry, don't expect explosions and impressive fights and give it your full attention from the very first minute.
Was the book better ? Well, under normals circumstances a book should always be better than a movie for the simple reason there is much more time to build a strong story and characters.
In this case, however, the movie stays very close to the book and having read the book before you see the move might actually help you in better understanding and appreciating the movie.
If then you are open to the story, give it your full attention and are willing to plunge in a different world for two hours (and aren't movies all about that after all ?), you're in for a wonderful and intelligent surprise.
Enjoy ! Mav.
Monster's Ball (2001)
Halle Berry got an Oscar for this ?!?!?!
Well, I probably completely missed the point and I probably simply didn't get it, but it is pretty amazing Halle Berry got an Oscar for this movie ! Were all the other actresses on a holiday ? She does nothing more than looking angry and unhappy in this movie and besides a couple of sex scenes even hardly moves ! In the few scenes in which she has a couple of lines, she acts she is drunk (and probably was, too).
This movie is slow (which is Okay), has characters that are as shallow as they can be (which is bad) and has no "body" at all (which is terrible). Conversations take an average of 12.5 seconds and usually make no sense at all.
In fact, the characters are sooo dull and such a bunch of losers you sometimes would like to kick their buts to get them going. Agreed, it is about a sad story and of course they don't feel very happy, but the way they are just standing there and looking to something or somebody is sometimes too hard to bare. It takes more than an hour before somebody smiles and says more than a couple of lines in one scene ! There is some nice photography and the music sets a nice move, but that's waaay to little to make up for the rest of the movie.
Seems most of the people like this movie, but I was really disappointed with it. "Sublime acting" ? "Impressive, realistic drama" ?? "If you like this we also recommend The Godfather" ??? Are we talking about the same movie here ? Somebody commented this movie on this board as "A film that allows the viewer to use her intelligence". Well, that's probably what I was missing...
Legally Blonde (2001)
There is a sequel ???
Once every now and then you come by a movie that is sooo bad you can hardly believe it. "Legally Blond" is one in this category. Since I started quoting movies on IMDB, only "Turbulence 3" got a lower rating.
It is too hard to start describing this here. If you feel the need, go ahead and watch this movie - it is amazing. And now there is a sequel as well ? The horror...
A Perfect World (1993)
Could have been much better
Not bad, good story, nice location, good camerawork etc,... but the actors lack personality. The little boy is the best actor of them all, but the rest sometimes seem half asleep. The end is not bad at all, but it should have been 15 minutes shorter. Fair: 6/10.
Bring It On (2000)
Could have been much worse...
Well, this is your typical teen-movie, as predictable as they can get (with one exception near the end), but it could have been much worse.
Light and relatively fun movie, with average humor and some pretty impressive dancing. Turn of your central system, watch this with the right expectation and it's not too bad...
Signs (2002)
Hmmm... could have been better
Not too bad and certainly well done on suggesting what is going on rather than spending millions on special effects. I am absolutely not against special effects, but when they take over a movie, like they often do, instead of adding to it,... Some very good placed humor as well and Gibsons children are absolutely the stars of the movie.
However, it is pretty unbelievable they get so few information about what is going on the whole time and the aliens - again - look like they always do: like humans, slim and green - Ouch !
Joan of Arc (1999)
Impressive
Clearly a Besson movie (compare it to Le Grand Bleu and Léon).
The camerawork is beautiful and adds very well to the drama. Dialogs are well balanced and strong. A great peace of cinema that grabs you and you don't realize it takes 2.5 hours. The only drawback I could find is that the French actually should have spoken French.
I regret I haven't seen it at home and not in a cinema theater, which would have been even better. Not a masterpiece, but pretty close to it...
Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal (2001)
Have to see it to believe it...
You have to see it to believe it: this movies is definitely one of the worst movies ever made. What are Hauer and Mantegna doing here anyway ?
Not only is this movie full of clichés (pilots are dead - rookie needs to land the plane - again ?!), the acting, sound and camerawork are unbelievable bad, the story sucks (I'm sorry - there is none), the characters are made out of cardboard and act like they had a bad meal, and the plot is full of holes (what's up with the traffic control tower ?).
But... you have to see it to believe it. It is sooo bad it's worth watching and it is even kind of funny (although I don't think it was intended to be). This must have been made by volunteers - I cannot believe somebody paid for this...
