Attack of the Murder Hornets (2021)
Fascinating...terrifying.
First, I'm going to just agree with a couple of the other reviewers, that potato farmer is a colossal piece of shhh... Some people are just born to suck.
Other than that, though, this documentary was a blast to watch. Informative, interesting, and even a little freaky (I found myself a tad jumpy at the end of the film).
I don't have much faith that we can eradicate all of the giant hornets, but I do hope we can find ways of protecting the world's honeybees, not only from the hornets, but from the many other things causing them to die off; they're more crucial to the planet than a lot of people realize, and it would be a shame to lose them entirely.
Anyway, check out this documentary, it's a great way to pass some time during a pandemic. And stay safe, everybody!
Host (2020)
Meh...not bad.
One person asked, "what kind of idiot does a seance on a Zoom meeting?" To which I ask, what kind of idiot does a seance unless they're 12? What difference does it make?
Which leads me to my next point -- I noticed a lot of other people saying "who grabs their laptop and carries it with them to check out noises around the house?!" Well...probably the kind of idiots who do seances over Zoom. Does it seem that unrealistic that they would bring the camera with them for the other participants of the seance to experience as well? I'm surprised so many people couldn't figure that out.
So normally I'd take away 5 stars automatically for it being a found footage. That's how serious I am in my campaign against that type of uninventive, lazy filmmaking. However, I found the idea a little creative and relevant with the runtime being the length of a free Zoom meeting, so I gave it a shot. That it was 57 minutes was a huge strength, any longer would have been unacceptable. And given the fact this was filmed during a worldwide pandemic, I forgave the fact that it was filmed as found footage.
All-in-all, it was a decent time. Nothing extraordinary, but not a pile of ass, either. Stay safe and healthy, everyone. ✌🏼
Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (2011)
Guilty until proven innocent.
Everyone is familiar with the phrase 'innocent until proven guilty.' And while that's a nice sentiment, the reality is it's a complete and utter lie. It's something the justice system says, but does not practice, which really isn't justice at all.
I don't know how to fix the justice system, but I know the first step is admitting it's severely broken, and then acknowledging what about the system needs fixing.
This documentary does an excellent job showing some of the major flaws we should be recognizing and working towards fixing, as well as inspiring people to make the effort to act. I truly believe this film has done a great service towards bettering the system so that in the future we won't make the same mistakes.
In the meantime, can we please stop saying we consider people innocent until proven guilty?!
There's Something Wrong with Aunt Diane (2011)
An unfortunate case of denial
There really is no mystery. The facts are quite clear, she was intoxicated. It may be a mystery to the family as to WHY she was intoxicated, but there should be no question as to the fact that she WAS intoxicated.
I feel for Daniel and understand that it's difficult for him to accept his wife was drunk, caused an accident and took eight lives as a result; but, the sooner he comes to terms with the reality of what happened, the sooner he'll be able to move on with his life. And, frankly, the sooner he moves on, the sooner everyone around him, especially his son, will be able to move on as well.
It's a heartbreaking story, but a very well done documentary. Definitely worth a watch.
Don't drink and drive, people.
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019)
Elizabeth Holmes is one creepy lady
Something about that woman gives me the chills. She dresses like Steve Jobs, always has a subtle smile that looks Prozac induced and apparently...never blinks.
Holmes doesn't come off as a horrible person or anything, and very well may have good intentions for her overall goal, but ultimately seems unaware of the fact that the things she's doing are wrong. She's delusional.
I personally found this to be a fairly enjoyable and informative documentary, definitely worth checking out.
