Way of Life (2010– )
Beautiful images, charismatic character
8 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I just happened to find this while channel surfing. The stunning scenery of the Argentinian Patagonia caught my eye. The protagonist really did immerse himself in the work and seem to be having fun in spite the harsh conditions, so, I felt transported to these beautiful and cold austral lands... until the Spanish music broke out and I really felt ticked off, because it just doesn't make sense with the images, that's from a different country in a different continent and to me it conjures images of Andalucian musicians and dancers in the scorching heat of southern Spain and not chilly and mountainous Patagonia... The people who edited this should have done their homework (to me it almost ruined the hard work put in the filming), come on, with the internet these days there is no excuse, just type Argentinian gaucho music in any browser.

Breaking Bad: Full Measure (2010)
Season 3, Episode 13
Oh Jesse...
16 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Poor Jesse, I do believe that at his core he's not a bad person, he might be a little stupid: he's just made one bad decision after another, he might have steered in some awfully moronic directions, but he never really got to do anything truly horrible. OK, he's making poison that somebody else is going to take, but he's not making them do it. I mean, I don't think he even thinks about it. I repeat, he's a little thick but when push comes to shove, he shows more compassion than MOST of the other characters in the show. Remember that scene with the seriously creepy junkie parents and how he treated the little boy, how he was horrified at what he saw (and remember what he was supposed to do there!), I bet you, he was totally the sweetest person ever to handle that poor kid... Ever since Jane died he might somehow, even unconsciously, feel responsible (at least partly) and that has made him kinda bitter and a little cynical: trying to sell to recovering addicts... until he realizes the girl also has a little boy, and so he can't f*** her over! See? He's not a bad person, I think he has a big bleeding heart. That's why the last scene of season 3 f'in breaks my heart: up to now others are the ones that have seriously injured or even killed somebody (INCLUDING Walt!) He didn't mean for Jane to fall back into drugs, nor did he want her to die... But here we are witnessing the downfall of Jesse, there's no return from this, in doing so he's killing something inside himself too. Kudos to Aaron Paul, you made me feel like somebody slapped me hard, with an anvil, and that god-awful clutch in my heart...

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: Sweet Jane (2007)
Season 7, Episode 12
Stop the hysteria, Petersen rules but Schreiber's not bad
9 March 2007
Stop being hysterical. Yes, Petersen is great, I love Grissom too. Don't'worry, he's not going anywhere. Schreiber did a great job on this episode: It was nice to see him kinda blue, melancholic like he really cared for these girls. He portrayed this feeling very well. I know that Gil is more distant; that's why I like him, for being such a weird robotic genius, quite a character... That's his thing (one of many), he doesn't know quite well how to relate to other human beings. Anyway, Gil's gonna come back, the few episodes we get to see with this guy will be interesting and he'll probably end up dying in such a way that Gil himself will have to figure it all out. It will probably be sad too and you'll feel sorry for him and all. Lighten up and enjoy the small quirks. Somedays is nice to eat something sweet, sometimes something salty, spicy too... it would be boring to eat the same thing everyday, wouldn't it?

Crush (I) (2001)
What a shame!!!
6 December 2006
What started as a funny story of three women in their 40's going thru a kind of middle life crisis and their bad relationships with men, then turns serious when an unusual romance blossoms for one of them. The relationship develops unexpectedly well, the characters seem real. The young man who's the love interest delivers some surprising twists and it's all very believable. We actually root for them and their beautiful love story… But just when the film could've built up to some real high class drama (the older woman confronting her fears and other people's prejudices) it whirls downwards into some really deranged nonsense, "pseudo" tragedy and plain silliness. The so well constructed characters and the very good performances get drawn into a not well chewed mess which is irritating to watch. It's a shame really, what had started well and could've turned into a really neat romantic flick, even a little jewel (with a good look on how these two people connect above all their differences and against all social conventions), gets wasted. It's almost as if we were watching two different films. Maybe the script was meant for a short film and didn't add up to the full hour and a half and had to be filled in? Anyway it could've been better written to have a coherent development and ending. What a shame.

Medium: Sweet Child O' Mine (2006)
Season 2, Episode 15
Kudos to Patricia Arquette and all the excellent actors of the cast
15 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The Dubois are such a wholesome family, the characters are so lovable, with any quirks they might have (or actually because of that) and the way their relationships are built. We start in the kitchen with the Dubois family having breakfast and suddenly we realize that there's a new member: in fact, is their "oldest" child, a boy of about 15, having an argument with his dad Joe about some skateboarding stuff laying in the garden. It's all so very normal, as it would be in thousands of homes around the world... until the kid starts choking and we get really scared, and then Allison wakes up and it was all a dream, a recurrent dream about her unborn child which she has every spring. The story then develops with some twists (as we could expect) with the same boy showing up again. What makes this work out so perfectly is Patricia Arquette. She really steals your heart. Her behavior towards the boy is totally disarming, her expression (like when he's choking in the kitchen) is of such love and despair, what a great actress!. The actor who plays her son (Noel Fisher) also impressed me: he goes from a sweet, innocent looking boy, to a dead eyed freak, possibly a monster (the scene in the bathtub) as the episode unfolds. Great writing too, I don't have a child but this episode made me cry my eyes out as it made me feel deeply all the motherly issues.

Ravenous (1999)
Gory, yet charming... Really worth watching
9 June 2006
Wildly absurd and atrociously funny, but ultimately charming... I couldn't stop laughing in spite of my stomach being challenged. It's actually very clever. Top cast, specially Robert Carlyle, I adore the man, he's capable of constructing a wide variety of characters: some unexpectedly compelling monsters like his violent Begbie in Traispotting or the crippled and madman King James I; as well as sweet ones like the troubled father of The Full Monty and the wholesome Scottish policeman in TV's Hamish Macbeth; from now on I consider myself his adoring fan. The music is really good, Damon Albarn's bizarre circus like score fits the craziest scenes. 10 points and 2 thumbs up!
