Gilmore Girls: Rory's Birthday Parties (2000)
It's Rory's b'day!
It was Rory's birthday, you guys! It was her sweet sixteenth!
She had, like two bday parties, one with her grandparents and their snooty high friends and - unfortunately- the Chilton kids. With only one outburst on Rory's part, the party was almost okay.
The other party was awesome, though, which consisted of Rory's and Lorelai's friends and Rory really had fun in this one.
So, what else went down this episode, you ask? I will tell you what else went down: the post-it incident. God, was that hilarious. It was also kind of crazy Lorelai's mum and dad's part. I mean, who has their daughter and granddaughter put post it notes to mark stuff they want after one's demise? It was super ridiculous, but also super funny.
Rory and Dean progress further in their relationship (secretly of course). He even stops by at Luke's to mouth happy birthday to her. That reminds me, if we didn't know this already, we know it now for sure: Luke's a ginormous softie. We can tell from the effort he put in setting up a table specially for Rory at her birthday complete with balloons and a cake.
The creepy guy, Tristin, simply refuses to give Rory a break even on her birthday. Also, I am willing to bet Paris has a secret crush on Tristin coz she's seen asking Rory whether she's going out with Tristin. Speaking of which, Paris was decent to Rory for the entirety of this episode. Crazy, right?
Lorelai had a twinkle in her eye when her mum stated that Like had a thing for her. So, yeah. Luke and Lorelai are also gonna hook up.
Oh, there was significant growth observed in Rory's grandma.
And that's all I have to say for this episode. Thank you for reading!
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Waste of time.
Where do I start? This movie sucks so bad , it makes staring at a wall for the next 2 hours seem more interesting.
The film's name is "the edge of seventeen", yet it doesn't deal with one thing typical of that age, despite it trying to tackle more issues than the number of flavours of Baskin Robbins, keyword being "trying". It doesn't actually bother solving even a single one. Some issues include Nadine and her mother's broken relationship, her mother's habit of being a damsel in distress, Nadine's depression, etc.
The film has Nadine, a girl on the edge of seventeen, have her bestie "betray" her by sleeping with her brother. She also had her dad die when she was 13, coz of reasons unspecified. So, basically, we get to watch her teenage angst and a bunch of crazy stuff happen to her for the entirety of the film spare the last few minutes ,where, with a little heart to heart with her bro, in which she tells him what we have been hearing for the entire duration of the film (she thinks she sucks.) , something her brother knew all too well ,and, bloop! Everything is fixed. The sun is shining, she is prettier, her mom's sweet and she has a boyfriend who's rich and popular, blah, blah, blah. You get it.
Since the entire thing feels nothing more than a waste of time and energy, the entire support cast seems unnecessary, the stupidest been the teacher, though his filler jokes are the only thing the that helped me get through the damn thing. Well, those and Blake Jenner's cute looks. Sigh...
Though, it does do one thing right: portray the teenage angst properly.
While Hailee Steinfield did a great job, the five feet apart actress did awful. Honestly, I have no idea why they gave her the job in the first place.
Moral of the story? Hugging Blake Jenner can make you popular and awesome and incredibly happy for no reason.
The film has left nothing else to say.
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020)
To all the boys 2: PS I still like you!
Have you seen it? You have seen it. 'Course you have seen it. Everybody's seen it.
Now that we know everybody's seen it, we can finally start obsessing over LJ's clothes (among other things) and finally go on that crazy shopping spree. Just kidding, I already bought the new scrunchies, suckers!
Okay, okay, let's really get started. The first half was dragged and the second half was rushed because of it. The time wasn't evenly divided because, apparently, making the perfect film for Valentine's day is more important than making a sequel.
LJ and Peter weren't given as much time as the last film and I feel like maybe their chemistry needed a little bit more work. And the chemistry between Lana and Jordan was sweet, but again, wasn't done justice.
And the way LJ ended things with John? I mean, I am team Peter all the way, but even I have to agree he deserved better than a sorry. Stormy's scenes again seemed way too less because of the time thing and therefore came off looking unnecessary. And the ending scene was super rushed. Like, seriously. It gave too many cliche rom-com vibes for even me to handle. Gen and LJ weren't given enough screen time and we didn't get as much time to process as it should have been. It was like, LJ and Gen have a moment and it is basically the defining point of the fil- oh, hey, we almost forgot all about star ball. It's awesome.
Also, did you know Jordan Fischer is a serial killer? Cause of his killer looks?
The soundtrack? It was a pleasant surprise to hear "Let's Kill This Love". I almost freaked again when I heard Billie's voice (first was when they had just released the film).
Point? The movie overall is adorable. It failed as a follow up to To all the boys I have loved before, but passed as a sweet little thing you can watch with your valentine. Heck, I want to make a boyfriend 'cause I wanted to watch it with him coz it's, in Kitty's words, super adorable.
The Sky Is Pink (2019)
The sky is pink.
The sky is pink is a lovely story about this couple who survive & stay together in the face of hard, cold & true tragedies of life.It makes you believe in love & lets you know that if you love someone, you will be there for each other,no matter what.
The film is narrated by their vivacious daughter,Aisha-Zaira Wasim-& it's the journey of her parents,Moose & Panda-as she so lovingly names them-as their love for each other & their marriage is put to test because of Aishi's untimely demise.
The film deals with grief & death of a loved one with as much light heartedness as possible. The "main villain" says in the starting of the film that this is not a tear jerker, but I found myself crying when her brother was shown lighting candle at her funeral.
A personal favourite of mine in this film is the family unit shown throughout the film.I do not believe it to be simply a modern touch to the age old family dynamics shown in bollywood.Unlike most of the families shown in the previous bollywood films, this family is not too perfect to seem unrealistic & perfect enough to be relatable. The realistic depiction of the the brother -sister dynamic is super relatable,& the endearing relationship between Moose & Panda is almost too sweet. It feels perfect & at the same time,so incredibly real. The part where Aisha calls "giraffe"-her brother,Ishan-& tells him she doesn't want to die & he consoles her & makes her feel better is when the first tear slips & they don't stop until maybe a week after watching the film, whether they are tears of happiness or tears of pain.I found myself attached to the teenage motivational speaker. &,yes,it does mean I'm still waiting for the tears to stop. You will find yourself running to get yourself your roomals & your phones to indulge your massive family feels.& it doesn't matter whether you are the emotional type or not, you will find yourself reaching to grab the tissue paper that the popcorn guy should have thrown in,especially considering the crazy amount of money you had to pay for one small bucket of popcorn. & no that has nothing to do with the amount of money I paid for the 3 cokes.
It's one of those rare gems that need to be seen. I definitely recommend not missing out on this particular cinematic experience.Plus, in case you are a girl, Rahul Saraf isn't half bad.In fact, you might find yourself falling head over heels in love with the guy by the end of the film. That is not to say I am in love wth him! *cough*
One of the many heart touching instances in the movie is,I believe, when Moose tells Inshlu that his sky should be whatever color he wants it to be. So the sky is pink, if he wants the sky to be pink.I believe the colour pink here is a metaphor for love, the one true theme of the film. This moment is the one where we get what an awesome mom Aditi is and the portrayal by Priyanka is truly heart touching.
The entire film,in my opinion, has some amazing shots like the partwhere the house is cleaned for the family when they come back to live in Delhi, something I don't find to be common in Indian films. The film does not feel rushed & while the time changing thing may throw you off the loop at first, you will find yourself wondering why other films don't have this,& even if they do,why isn't it as cool as this film's.The film's ending features real-life brother of Aisha's unique song tribute for the sister he loved & it gives you an odd sense of settlement & contentment. The film's jokes, too, are funny & all the songs are suitable to whatever the film's mood is at the time.It is a must watch because it tells you the truth of life and importance of living your life to the fullest. It may seem slow for a bit, but is overall quite entertaining. It is surely an inspiring picture that is suitable for all ages. It's a lively teenager's awe inspiring legacy which shouldn't be missed.Kinda reminds me of that age old saying-which I also googled-
"It's better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way."
I will also like to point out that the sky is,indeed, pink.
