Wrong Turn (2021)
This is the ultimate WRONG turn.
As a big fan of the previous Wrong Turn movies, this one feels like a insult. Was scarce gore and too much talking, this one is closer to a drama than anything else.
The "modern" way of portraying teenagers in recent horror movies, is unbelievable and overdone. The classic setting of stupid teenagers getting murdered by killers who outsmart them, is completely overshadowed by racist and homophobic hillbillies put against a crew of badly written "modern" teenagers.
The writing is lazy and the acting is worse than a middle school play.
Nothing about this sad attempt is acceptable in any way. Do better.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Classic horror, as we know it.
"Suspense" is the keyword here.
This movie is very "Hollywood". It has all the horror classics, we know and love. From jumpscares to creepy monsters.
It really is a modern, horror classic and that is a huge compliment compared to many movies out there. There are some movies who take the Hollywood aspect too far and just ends up being super cringy, so you have to curl your toes while watching them. Then there are other movies who completely forgets that horror movies have a meaning to them and just ends up being constant jumpscares, which makes you immune and you just sit and yawn through them. This movie is a perfect balance between the two.
Story wise it builds the tension so well and it doesn't take long for something to happen, so it is not boring at all. Definitely the kind of movie you'd bring friends over to watch.
Now like all movies this movie isn't perfect, there are many flaws but i won't get too much into these, you'll have to figure those out for yourself. However i would like to note that even though the plot is great and the actors play well there are some things that just doesn't make sense in the way the characters act.
Another problem is actually the fact that it does resemble a horror classic and the problem with those is that they are (usually) really, really predictable.
Also this movie isn't super scary, it just does your head in a few times.
Aside from these few points, the movie was really good and i would definitely recommend watching this with your girlfriend/boyfriend and/or your friend(s).
Hagazussa (2017)
This Movie is Something Special.
I would maybe even go so far as to say that, watching this movie is almost as reading a book. This is neither a good nor a bad thing. Let me explain.
This movie is not a horror movie. I will be so bold as to make this statement because it does not spark horror or fear. It does not scare the viewer nor does it make you feel uneasy. It almost makes you feel sad for the witches, which is amazing, because this point of view is very rarely accepted.
As a big fan of especially this kind of witch and witch tale. I would like to say that i both loved and hated this movie.
I loved this movie because as i mentioned earlier it takes the things we already know about witches and the common folk of that time period and then twists and turn them to make you feel like you don't know who's bad or good.
And i hated this movie both because it raises a lot of questions and none of them are answered which is sad but then again it isn't because do we really want to know? And because even though i am a huge fan of these kinds of tales (as mentioned before) it just seemed very slow and boring to me. I know it is meant to be but come on, a little more spells/revenge please, there are so many more angles to show.
Aside from the plot and the story of the movie, visually this is a masterpiece. It has the toned down colors, the moody lighting, it has actors who really know what they're doing and the unfathomably great soundtrack to boot.
Even though i don't speak German and have no idea what they're saying they actually rarely even speak. Which technically should ruin the movie but it really doesn't, it just adds to the already dark and gloomy feel it builds up so well.
So to summarize: This movie is great, but it could be even better.
Midsommar (2019)
an amazing, creepy, bizarre, disgusting, beautiful, anxiety-inducing mess of a masterpiece
I don't even know where to begin with this. This movie is an amazing, creepy, bizarre, disgusting, beautiful, anxiety-inducing mess of a masterpiece and it was just an amazing ride.
Let me say right off the bat that if you're a classic, jump-scare-loving-horror-enthusiast that loves nothing more than ghosts, monsters and urban legends. This movie is NOT for you.
That is not to say that this movie doesn't get your blood pumping because... wow.
It starts off with the most anxiety triggering thing i have seen in a long time and leaves you almost depressed as the movie continues.
Not many horror-related/suspicious things happen until the movie reaches about the halfway-point but it really does keep you hanging on, i did not look away from the screen for one second.
The actors are amazing and you literally feel what they feel. (In spite of Jack Reynor's constant "deer-in-the-headlights" look.)
Florence Pugh did so well holding on to the emotion of her role and expressed it in such a way, i have never seen any actor do before. I will definitely look for her name in the future.
The movie in general is a straight up masterpiece, both visually and story-wise and it is rare that we get to see that these days.
This movie is centered around the feeling of helplessness and loss of control. It really feels like you are there, living it. This is also a result of the amazing cinematography this piece contains. From perfect frames that give just the right feel and the creative transitions that really helps give you a sense of stress. Oh and the special effects is something you will have to see for yourself, it is inexplicable. You really have to be a bit of a movie/cinematography nerd to fully appreciate this piece of art.
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
A movie that had me in heaven but then dragged me to hell.
(pun intended) The movie starts out so well with a good plot and a very relate-able protagonist. It had good scares, disturbing scenes and very neat tension-building. Even through it's visually displeasing zooms, angles, pans and horrifyingly "cringey" special effects. It managed to keep me interested most of the time. However when it reaches the end it feels like it drops in quality both visually and story-wise. Once you hit the "hour mark" it seems like it's just the same things, happening over and over.
It seems like this could be a fantastic movie, had it not been for the last part feeling like a teenager's weak attempt at finishing an essay within the given time.
I'm glad i watched it, but i wouldn't watch it again.
(a note: to me it seemed like the ending was something taken out of a Final Destination movie, which is not a bad thing, just very cliché.)
