Ava (2020)
Just... don't.
I could write and explain the how absurdity bad this movie is - from absolutely incoherent storylines, to fights that are so edited and cut, that they are impossible to understand - but I'm just gonna put this as clear as possible: Don't waste your time.
Oh, by the way, a secret assassin's organization would have operatives that are, let's say, good at their job?
Andwhoever the choreographer for the "fight sequences" was, he/she was definitely not a vet, or even a martial arts fighter with understanding of how a REAL fight flows.
Here's to you Colin Farrell, and you Glock with a REFLEX SIGHT and ridiculous suppressor. You stealthy, sneaky, sneaky assassin's.
Welcome to the Punch (2013)
It all goes really well, until it doesn't.
This film is one of many that share a common problem;
It starts of with an interesting premise, followed by a "X amount of years/months" time jump cliche (as if this would make the first act an "origin" sub-plot - somehow), and - suddenly - evolves into an oversimplified (and rushed) Hero's Journey arch, but with the same mistake we see. all. the. time:
- A underdeveloped characters death, that means nothing because, well, she got all of 15 minutes of screen time. Check.
- A "I must go back and set things right(ish)" due to some tragedy - that is ill explained, and we as an audience simply don't care. Check.
- Good guy turns out to be bad guy cliche. Check.
- Weak as balls shadowy government conspiracy. Double check.
- Corporate overloads nefarious interests that drives the conspiracy (that frankly, in this case, WTF?!). Check.
Such a waste of an almost noir/neon vibe, and a very strong performance from both McAvoy and Strong.
No redemption, no conclusion. One more of those "is it over? Do we get any type of conclusion during credits?" movies.
