Malignant (2021)
James Wan makes a troma film!
This feels like it was a dare. This is his worst film and the best Troma film at the same time! Goodbye Toxic Crusader and Kabuki Cop! Hello Malignant!
If WANT OTHER DIRECTOR had made this, it would have been a dumpster fire. You can lull yourself into a catatonic state and enjoy the acting and delivery, but then if you stop yourself and pay close attention to the dialog, you say to yourself, "Wait, what? That was stupid."
But he pulled it off!
Ice Age (2002)
Human-Washing History
A wooly mammoth (hunted to extinction by humans), a sabertooth tiger (hunted to extinction by humans), and others try to save a human baby that will grow up and kill, eat, and be clothed by them until they're gone. They're hunted by a pack of other sabertooth tigers who are portrayed as the bad guys.
I've heard of white washing and witnessed it all too many times. Where humans identifying with their skin- instead of accessible heritage that other skin tones do not have- edit historical facts to make dead people sound less horrible than they were so that said white people can pretend that said dead people weren't as bad as we all know they were.
Now, just apply that to humans in general. And forever. There. Do you feel less guilty about not having a thing to do with killing all the sabertooth tigers?
Suicide Squad (2016)
Not as good as the first one
This was just a shot for shot remake. The guy they got to replace Will Smith even looked like his twin.
The Fall (2006)
A Visual Masterpiece
Just watched this last night with a Q&A with the director, Tarsem. Every single shot location was real! This film was shot in 28 countries over the course of 4 and a half years! And it paid off! Tarsem began location scouting 23 years ago, while traveling the world for commercial shoots. Seventeen years ago, he began casting across the world for the role of the little girl Alexandria. Once he found her (which took 13 years), he began to weave his amazing tale. This obsession of his to make this film perfect should be a real inspiration for people who want to make it in the business. This movie was 100% self-financed- which is one of the reasons why it took so long. The director filmed all of the shots with the six-year old actress and then the other scenes were scattered throughout the world. He would look for commercial work in those countries and then get all of the actors to fly in from across the world to film their shots. This film is bound to win something. As amazing as everyone keeps saying the visuals are, I truly believe that it has to be experienced on the big screen to truly be appreciated. They are much like moving paintings. By the way, the cinematographer- this is his first time ever doing it! He was previously the camera loader (the guy who puts the film in the reels for the camera bodies). Go see this film. Tell your friends to see this film. I'm going to go back and see it again!
