Seishun buta yaro wa yumemiru shoujo no yume wo minai (2019)
Too much tears and too much tragic
At the beginning, it would be fair to give a context and to explain from which perspective I watched the movie.
First of all, it should be mentioned that I have not watched the series. Fans of the series know characters and plot better, so for them it probably evokes charm of the series.
Secondly, I really enjoy in slice of life anime and generally prefer anime movies over series. For my taste, series in overall last for too much time (if you combine all episodes) and insist on emotions "at every corner" i.e. They try to provoke public's emotions several times during an episode. It simply isn't my cup of tea. I like a gradual build-up during a 1-2 hrs long movie that eventually contains 1-2 moments which give me goosebumps. And I like goosebumps provoked by a high-quality storyline, moment, frame, sound, not by tragedies, tears and similar unpleasant things.
If I had to explain the movie in just a few words, that would be - too intense.
As somebody that is not into the series, it was difficult at start to understand what happens - what is the main idea, what different form of a same person means, relations between characters, etc. While I like mind-blowing movies in general (not only anime) and although I eventually understood everything mentioned above, it was simply to intense for me, in a sense that scenes, events and emotions were so fast paced. Like the whole movie is packed with too much of "action", too much of intense scenes, emotions and tragedies. That did not evoke emotions that I like in slice of life animes - a feeling that mixes anime story with my real life experience, positive and nostalgic thoughts, smile and melancholy... On the other hand, abundance of tears and tragic scenes activated my defense mechanisms so I reacted with strange combination of ambivalence and (creepy) laugh, while I had been thinking throughout the movie that I expected something else.
Once again, I'm deeply sorry if I disturbed hardcore fans with such a point of view. :) If you liked the series and like this type of anime in overall, then I guess you should give it a try.
