The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
One Word Review
Perfect.
Thats all this film needs. Characters were well developed, and consistant. The consistancy in fact, is what makes this movie as hysterical as it is. Mannerisms and quirks all tie in together creating a harmony.
Well written, well directed, well acted, well done!
El espinazo del diablo (2001)
A fascinating movie
I am not a horror flick fan, but this was not horror. It wasn't even thriller really because of the story line that goes with it. After reading several of the reviews, I found that people were concentrating too much on the 'ghost' part of the story - leaving them to feel empty, when really, all you needed to do was watch the movie without reservations.
Since I am not a reviewer that feels the need to spill the story, I will leave you with one final comment.
Many times movies are made and they are over produced, containing too much special effects (obviously ruining the realism of the movie). This film does not do any of that. The characters are developed, the story is engrossing, and it leaves you with one word at the end.
Wow.
Buena Vista Social Club (1999)
Great Documentary, but see them live
I just bought tickets to see them live, for the second time (Omara this time). This documentary is great, and introduces jazz fans to a whole new level. It is moving to see, and hear the stories that come out of these old souls.
If you get the chance to see them live - DO IT! It is hands down, the most amazing concert/show I have ever seen. And I have seen many.
Ali (2001)
50 Min Into the Film...
I have been watching this film for 50 minutes and there is no story. If I am absolutely bored to tears tomorrow, maybe I will consider finishing it. The film itself is visually pleasing. The script is lacking in so many ways I can not begin to explain. For now, I would rather be sleeping.
Training Day (2001)
Good Cop Bad Cop Drivel
Let's just hand out Oscars to every actor who plays a one dimensional tough guy.
Hawke steals the show (what show there was to steal),a fundamentally pointless plot, with a predictable ending.
**SPOILER**
I think Denzel Washington's acting skills shone most in the very last scene - flailing like an epileptic while bullets passed through him. Simply hilarious.
Primal Fear (1996)
Just watch it
DO NOT READ ANY REVIEWS!!! JUST WATCH IT!!!
If you have seen the usual suspects, you know that if someone tells you what happens it ruins the WHOLE movie.
So stop reading.. and watch.
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
Absolutely a GREAT Movie...
How rare it is that a chick flick gets meshed so well with a movie that a guy could watch without finding himself desiring to make little men out of cheese doodles.
This movie was hilarious, and at the same time sweet. Women can relate and men can laugh. It really is a great movie.
I was hesitant to bother with it, and would never have subjected my boyfriend to it, but now that I have seen it, I would actually go so far as to say its ownable.
Renee is wonderful, Hugh played a fabulous slime ball and the real star of the show was the guy who played the keeper.. Name? I can't remember! I was too enthralled in the end scene.
Its the opening scene that was the stealer though, any woman can relate, and men can have a little view of our little insanities.
9/10 no half marks allowed.
Pollock (2000)
If you are experiencing insomnia... rent Pollock.
The tagline to this movie should have been
"biggest sleeper of 2000"
I am not lying when I say I fell asleep 4 times in this movie... you know the short little sleeps you have when you wake up hoping that the movie somehow got good? Even though I only slept for a scattered 20 min of the show (my boyfriend kept moving and waking me) he agreed that there was absolutely NO character development. You are sitting there going "why why WHY!!!"
RIDICULOUS
save your money... rent something good... unless of course you need to sleep.
Rhythm Thief (1994)
Interestingly Shot, Well Acted, Entertaining
The highlight of this movie was in the directing. Because it was shot in black and white, it brought a depth to a movie that had little to go on script-wise. What made this movie an 8 in my opinion was the use of music, the use of the black and white, and the girl in the movie, who I found more compelling than the main character. There isn't much to give away, as the story itself holds no baring to the beauty of the movie. Its the silence that tells the story in this flick :)
Sit down in a dark room, and enjoy.
How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
The Theory of Living to 402 is born!
So I am going to tell a little story.
Me and my best friend are going to live til we are 402 together. We will be sitting in our easy chairs, with our easy walkers in reach, and we will die together. This movie highlights why girls have best friends - and after seeing it, you never want to leave them.
It is obviously a chick movie - but its a good one at that. I don't care what it was rated (and I am, a self-proclaimed movie snob) it has wonderful memories.. so girls.. get out there, and rent it with your best friend. You wont regret it.
Leaving Normal (1992)
I have watched this movie at least 100 times
You know when you find one of those movies - and it just connects with some part of you, that may or may not be the sucker part?
Well this happened to me.
A friend left this movie at my house and moved away... one day, me and my best friend sat down to watch it. And cried.
It was a beautiful, if typical, chick movie, I loved the scenery shots, even if they were computer generated, I loved the little antics like "flan" no spoiler.. just a joke you will understand if you get off your butt and find this movie.. its great for girls.. boys may enjoy it but not nearly as much as a girl and her girlies :)
Made (2001)
Nothing Earth-Shattering But A Great Movie Nonetheless
I found this movie to be a very well done comedy. There are parts in the movie that you ask yourself a question and then they answer it for you, in a comedic and well set out manner. The whole movie flows and is carried out flawlessly. With all the crap summer movies that are out right now, take some time to sit back and laugh!
The only downfall in the movie is Puff Daddy AKA P. Diddy AKA Puffy AKA Sean Combs - he is unbelievable, but it adds a comedic aspect to the movie... its just hard to see him as "hard."
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Speechless for Days
Generally, after watching a movie, there is a discussion held between me and my boyfriend.
This movie left us with nothing to say.
That is not to say it is a bad thing. In fact, I would almost say it is a good thing. They closed up the movie well, and there was nothing to be confused about. It was consistent, and clean - all while showing the violence and abuse that comes with drugs.
Don't expect to be smiling at the end of this movie. Do not, by any means, expect to jump up raving about this movie to all you know. Its powerful, with little dialogue, and you don't really know WHAT to say about it.
Which leads me to this-
Dreams are a powerful thing.
That is my only real comment... you just have to see it for yourself. Once again, not for the faint of heart.
OH!!! And (sorry) I loved how the avoided showing the actual use of heroin, thats what turned me off of Trainspotting - but in this movie, it is creatively done so that you can stomach if if you don't appreciate needles.
I didn't know what to give this movie - but after 3 days of thinking about it, I give it a 10/10. And as one man in the comments forum said "it should be shown in high schools"
Full Metal Jacket (1987)
Not for the faint of heart
I suppose there isn't much I can say about this movie that hasn't already said.
The one thing I take from this movie, and its realism, is that the women who go to war, are much stronger, and should be more respected than they are.
A wonderful portrait. 9/10
The Player (1992)
Blah-di-Blah-Blah-Blah
It is so rare that I would slam a movie so hard. That is for one reason. I am an avid IMDB user ratings viewer, and choose movies accordingly. I was looking forward to watching this movie, with its reasonably high rating, and siskel and ebert (is that how you spell it?)giving it two thumbs up.
This movie is a SOLID 5. There are no half points in my land, and even if there were - it would be a solid 5. While the story line was original, the movie was boring. It wasn't predictable and yet, it wasn't entertaining. It could have been much, much better.
I tell no lies, this movie, is exactly that, a blah-di-blah-blah waste of two hours. if you want a good mystery movie, check out Chinatown - it was a great movie, and is far superior to "The Player"
The Contender (2000)
Typical and Predictable, but watchable - sort of.
Given Joan Allen was nominated for an Oscar for this role, and it got raving reviews, I was honestly hoping to see something different come out of this movie.
All hopes came crashing down when I realized what a waste of time it was. It was completely predictable - to the point that you could ALMOST say the words as they came out of the actors mouth. It had the same old story line, with the same old problems, and the bad guy gets hurt in the end.
I will say that Joan Allen was great in this movie. She was strong, and poised in this role, and there is a message within this movie. Its just too "been done" - and while this goes with many movies, there are only soo many twists we can see with politics...
The Third Man (1949)
The Radioshow is Better
I had wanted to see "The Third Man" based on the old-time radio show that I had fell in love with, hoping to get some answers on "Who Is Harry Lime"
I was pretty disappointed to say the least. Not only was this movie confusing, but it still never really answered my question.
I found those who I watched it with, were frustrated with the fact that they couldn't follow it, and while I had some background in Harry Lime, I still couldn't answer their questions, as it was not what I had expected.
If you are watching this to get some information on "The Lives of Harry Lime" the radio show is more informational than the movie... listen to "See Naples and Live" it will get you to the point the movie left off... *spoiler* how he faked his own death, a second time, with cops all around him, is beyond me.
For those who haven't even HEARD of OTR, or The Lives of Harry Lime - go nuts, see the movie and see if you can figure it out.
On a scale of 1-10..... it gets a 6
Cecil B. Demented (2000)
Absolute Crap
Anyone who saw some depth to this movie, was looking for a needle in the haystack, there was no purpose to this movie, but to bore you for 2 hours.
I would have preferred to watch Battlefield Earth - and lets not go there.
I would have liked to see something come out of this movie, since from the box I thought I would agree with the point. I think it would have been a great improvement if the movie in the movie - had a point.
But since it didnt - I give this movie a 0 out of 100
