Leave the World Behind (2023)
Breathtaking but frighteningly realistic
In real life more often than not, there are no easy answers or explanations on what is happening. More often than not nobody knows what is going on (remember the first period of the pandemic) and the world is a place full of surprises.
This movie reflects that. Excellent acting, direction, photography and script contribute to an engaging story we all can relate to, especially since, in the last years, we lived through situations that would seem unbelievable some time ago.
I especially loved the unraveling of the main characters and the evolvement if their relations. Totally unexpected, memorable, the movie makes you think what you would do if you were in the characters' shoes.
Ingenuous scenes such as the ones with the ship, the cars and the deer added up to the ambience of the movie in a great way. Bravo Netflix!
Fool Me Once (2024)
Decent story terrible lead character
The story is decent and the unwinding of the plot engaging although it does stretch it out a bit.
What stands out for me, while in the 6th episode, is how unlikeable is Maya, the "lead" of the series. She is increasingly annoying, without basic social manners, disloyal to those who help her, aggressive with no reason whatsoever and even stupid. I understand that lead characters should not be "perfect" but they should make you empathize with them and somewhat care for them. This is one of the rare cases where, for me, it has been impossible to care for her. Perhaps it is her bad, flat, soulless acting coupled with bad direction and script that totally sabotages the main character. When part of the entertainment value of such a series is to somewhat get in the shoes of the main character if not to really like them, it is minus 5 points because of this.
Other characters like Sami, the mother in law and the younger cop are decent. Sami's acting in particular is great and a major reason to continue to the next episode, he makes you care what happens to him.
Invasion (2021)
Different !
If you want to watch the usual space invasion cliche, this is not for you. For the rest of us that may not be such fans of straight disaster movies, this is a must see.
This is a slow burning story focusing on the human element. Very interesting to show people and stories from different countries in different languages. I love that throughout, people are clueless of what is really going on. Great story, direction, photography, casting, acting. Characters we can relate to, situations that seem realistic (well after the last years).
I saw the 1st episode and then I decided to subscribe to Apple tv because of it. I am not sorry I did it.
Mia nyhta tou Avgoustou (2022)
Much below expectations
The first series To Nhsi (the Island) was perhaps the best Greek series of all times. Great story, tightly knot plot, photography, dialogues, acting very moving at times but not depressing. It would be difficult for this one to have the same very high standards, as is usually the case with sequels of very high quality series or movies in the first place. I never expected it to be of equal quality with the Island. But this one is almost bad. Slow moving and boring, totally depressing, failing to take us back to the 60s era, many inconsistencies for characters and plot (for those that watched the Island), childish scenario, irrelevant and slow moving parallel stories that fail to be engaging. I give 3 stars for great acting by lead actors who participated in the Island cast as well. However in my opinion, their acting could not save a bad, slow moving, unconvincing scenario. All in all, a bore.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
About Season 3 and Ami
I loved season 1, season 2 was Ok and I am on episode 7 of season 3 which I believe is much lower level than the other seasons, too chaotic especially during the first episodes trying too hard to cover all 'hot' issues at once. I wholeheartedly hope the killer is Ami. She is the most detested character ever ! I hate her presence, her voice, her hypocrisy... I do not know if this was the creators' intent but I see that I am not the one feeling this way. If she did kill Bryce... well that would be an interesting twist.
