Standing Up, Falling Down (2019)
Worthy of a watch but could have been so much more.
The film is a bittersweet drama with comedic touches dealing with the subjects of regret, loss and addiction. Both Crystal and Schwartz are excellent although I felt
the plot was oversimpistic and fell foul to the usual Hollywood cliches but thankfully
moved at a pace which allowed it to be forgiven.
I felt there was the possibility of a really great film here, as most of the ingredients were present but as always most films now get stuck in a rut of losing their subtlety
and simply over repeat to enforce simple concepts about dealing with life.
The film is worth a watch to enjoy the chemistry between Schwartz and Crystal but it felt that there should have been more of this.
I, Tonya (2017)
Not great at all.
I just have a few criticisms regarding this film.
I never enjoyed it to be honest. I felt it tried far too hard to put across Tonya as a victim. It also insisted on creating "key moments" and scenes using the first minutes of theme tunes which have been over used by all the other average films out there.
As for the real victim, Nancy Kerrigan, she was hardly featured at all and when you consider the event you have to question the mentality of the film makers in "enabling" the sense of "victimhood" and naivety in the people found guilty.
They make a Coen Brothers film but not actually a good one.
There was far too much over acting and the usual scenes of violence and stupidity that we have grown to recognize in poor quality films from the US.
The Commuter (2018)
Never ask someone to do something that you could do yourself.
Yes!! I can hear you Clem Fandango!!
Good detectives should never get into insurance sales.
Hit men are much better than people who are forced to kill.
Trains will smash on impact but windows will always stay intact.
Liam Neeson will do any film.
Every train user is a Wing Chun expert.
Guitars do not hurt that bad when smashed into your face.
You can jump in slo mo much further than in real time.
Black men always die in films to maintain the natural balance of life.
Wonder (2017)
Why I don't like this film.
I felt that the film was not genuine.
The reason was probably the poor casting of the parents and the fact that thy decided to create a "monster" using make up and NOT instead use a real child who was born differently.
The other thing I hated was the numerous cliches that are enforced to enhance the concept of being accepted when you are different.
The need to be accepted is something all kids go through and to be different in any way makes life even harder or kids.
It was like the bully kids ONLY accepted him when he stood up for himself and then transformed them into the "Stand by Me" dream gang, complete with lake view sequence.
Hollywood cannot do subtle, they struggle with it and as for the many Star Wars references which are destroying all films.
I preferred it when Star Wars was indivisible from Star Trek to most kids.
That franchise is like 40 years old now. Please leave it alone.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Awful film
This film is an insult to the people who have adored Star Wars since 1978 (like me) or those people who experienced it from childhood later on.
Yes Lucas did make some abysmal films after the first three and I could never forgive him for Jar Jar or the use of Ewoks but what this film does is get all of the great parts of Star Wars and flush it down a toilet.
Disney have ruined one of the most adored franchises in the history of movies.
Plot holes, absurd stories, awful casting, awful acting.
I wouldn't even want to watch it again if I were paid to do it.
The Love Witch (2016)
Great film but you need to appreciate the Director's intent.
This film is inspired by the glamour of past classics and tries to tackle the enforced masculinity of those films.
It is a film for women to recognize the predicament of being a woman in a society mostly run by men for men.
The woman is seen as a child, a Lolita, the other woman, the wife that cooks and
cares for the spawn of the man and finally becomes surplus to needs and finally a spinster.
The man cannot see past his own biological needs which are embellished in culture and media because they sell so easily.
Consider the man who preys on younger girls but then holds his own daughters due to their virginity. He protects them like possessions to be "taken" by another man.
Consider the man who chases a girl, has his way and then decides she is not that great anymore.
Women are a vessel for mens needs but they are so much more.
Woman have their own needs, dreams and aspirations yet are forced to conform to this society of masculinity that is so flawed yet seems to be sustained.
This film is an expression of woman and not popcorn chomping material.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Star Wars The Force Awoken Review
I have just watched the film after weeks or being too nervous .
After the 30 minutes of franchise related adverts ,the trailers started .A constant flow of good vs evil franchise films starting with London has Fallen ,Captain America ,Civil War, Star Trek ,X- men .
Seriously this constant flow of formulaic drivel has become laughable .Time to try something different perhaps .
The new characters in the film all seemed very light weight ,there was no real character development at all for Finn . I didn't appreciate the way that every significant character seemed to just bump into each other regardless of where they landed .
The discovery of the LightSabre was also a very questionable scene .
Another criticism was the situation between Leia ,Han and their son now choosing to work for the evil Empire . They seemed to accept the situation a little too easily for my liking .
The acting of Domhnall Gleeson was pantomime camp .
The scene where Rey discovers her powers and then uses then was atrocious .
The scene showing the death of Han was over thought and you could see the outcome from a mile off .
The obsession with Death Star Super weapons was boring and the usual split action scene of space battle / significant character battle really has become an over used cliché .
I never enjoyed one scene in the whole film .
I am truly broken hearted ,and what the hell was that final scene of Rey holding a light sabre and Luke facing her .It was nothing more than a scene devised for an 80s style flyover scene reminiscent of Clash of the Titans (original).
My rating 2/10
28 Weeks Later (2007)
My Opinion of this Movie
I have just watched this movie and on the whole was thoroughly disappointed.I wont go into specifics as i don't wish to spoil anything for those that wish to see the movie to decide for themselves.
What i will say is that the story, characters and the flow of the movie all lacked in one way or another.I found so many clichés in the film that at times i thought i was watching a parody. And whereas the first movie used mostly new or unknown actors with just a few well known this movie seemed to say "wow bigger budget means bigger names, bigger scenes, bigger bangs etc" which for most movies is fair enough i guess. The difference here being that the real success of the first movie was done to the fine details and characterisations,That feeling that You could see Yourself in those situations, and the way that self survival and the idea of cowardice can be interchangeable.I believe that if the movie had been made by the people that bought us the implausible but highly entertaining " Children of Men" that we would have another hit on our hands. However this is not the case. The movie seems to go for the usual generic shocks and mind-games without provoking any sense of real interest.Im so annoyed with the makers of this film because although fans seem to feel that a film they like has some obligation to go the way they would wish it to go.I just feel that this movie went straight to bargain bin popcorn flick. Please no sequel ...........
