What Is a Woman? (2022)
Mandatory viewing in this day and age
"What is a Woman?" exposes the hypocrisy of the social media transgender movement by showing how prominent and especially profiting members of that community cannot - and/or are unwilling to - answer the most basic questions related to the subject, and in fact portray the very act of asking questions as fundamentally offensive to life in an attempt to dissuade criticism.
The documentary is well-paced, engaging and most of all, fair. It (rightly) establishes that there's a difference between real gender dysphoria and the act of transitioning as a result of insecurity and peer pressure, and only criticizes the latter.
This documentary should be mandatory viewing for any person, but perhaps especially parents and people who work with children and young people.
Matt is on the right track with his aim of fighting depression and insecurity in children instead of reinforcing it and then providing the "cure" by providing symptomatic treatments in the form of drugs and life-altering surgery.
My Spy (2020)
Easygoing feel-good comedy.
A movie about a spy that gets too close to the target. This film is nothing revolutionary, but then again it doesn't try to be. The acting overall is great, and the comedy is funny without being too embarrassing. The soundtrack is good, and the plot is decent, even if it's nothing we haven't seen before.
If you put on this movie looking to be blown away at huge-budget action and a gamechanging story, you're going to be disappointed.
If you put on this movie looking for a light-hearted comedy for some easy entertainment, maybe for a family evening or even just to have running in the background, this is just the thing.
The Handmaid's Tale: Offred (2017)
Might have good ratings, but the first couple of episodes are painfully slow
Never having watched the show before, I picked it up because of its ratings. I'll continue watching it to see if it picks up later on, but so far I've been nothing but disappointed and can only conclude that I've wasted 3 hours watching something which could and should have been cut down to no more than 30 minutes.
Why?
Because we spend at least the first three episodes almost exclusively on world-building. The plot barely moves *at all* save for a few minor interactions which, again, could've easily been cut down to 30 minutes. The show so far is full of long pauses between every single spoken sentence which are supposed to add to some form of perceived atmosphere, but mostly only succeeds in dragging out every scene way past the point of boredom, painfully drawn-out scenes of systemic oppression and flashbacks which attempt to display the characters' confusion, fear and despair as the world changes around them, yet fails to do so convincingly.
The people posting positive reviews of the first couple of episodes must've either been drunk while watching them or only rate them based on the show in its entirety rather than the episodes themselves. I hope the pace picks up asap , or I'll die from old age before a week passes in the show's timeline.
