The Interview (2014)
A disappointing movie
This was a disappointing movie, the story idea was great and there are a few moments where it is funny but that just makes you see how good this movie could have been and it was a wasted opportunity. The Korean characters I thought were pretty good, they played their roles well and it felt kind of real. It was the two main characters that ruin it, Rogen was just being himself and acting the same way he always does (the way Adam Sandler does I hate to say) and Franco was just being weird for the sake of weird. I have always been a fan of the movie Spies Like Us which I know is generally considered a pretty crappy movie but I loved it and I was hoping this might be the same. But the critics are right this movie is not worth watching unless if you are huge fans of Rogen and Franco's work. It will be a historical irony that such a big deal was made over such a mediocre film.
Dredd (2012)
Terrible Movie
I don't understand how this movie got the ratings it did, a 7.2 in IMDb and 77% on rotten tomatoes. It's predictable, cheesy, the violence is over the top and boring and the characters are standard run of the mill and uninteresting. I guess if I was a fan of the comic book I might have appreciated it more, but just the movie alone is not worth watching. It's very similar to Raid: Redemption and even though Raid is not that great of a movie either, its quite a bit better than this. I saw the high ratings and was expecting something reasonably good but it turned out to be one of the most disappointing movies I have seen in a while.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)
A Good Film
The rating for this film when I saw it was 7.4 which by IMDb standards is fairly high, so my expectations were high as well. The movie started off well, the story and characters were interesting and I have always enjoyed courtroom movies so it didn't take much for me to get into it. Then the story takes a turn for the unlikely and what starts off as a realistic crime drama becomes a very coincidental Matthew M. film.
The story is overall not bad, but there are just too many instances where I was thinking, "that worked out well for him." You never feel like the good characters are in danger or that the story might favour the bad guys in any meaningful way. This is a happy ending story all the way. Having said that the film did keep my interest almost the whole time, the story is somewhat unique.
The acting is fine, Matthew M. plays himself which is not necessarily a bad thing. I liked him in A Time to Kill and I liked him in this film as well. Ryan Phillippe is boring as the bad guy.
I am surprised that this movie has a 7.4 rating, my ratings often are similar to the IMDb average but I have a bias towards these types of movies and giving it a 7/10 was pushing it for me.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
A Frustrating Film
None of the transformers movies have been all that good, but this one is the worst. Even the CGI (which up to this point was pretty good) is bad, there were scenes where I felt like I could see where the green screen was. The frustrating part of it is that you can see the potential of this series, the transforming robots are cool and the comic book story behind it is interesting. But other than the robots everything else in the movies is total crap. Cliché after cliché and the girl they have playing Sam's girlfriend is totally useless, she is nothing but eye candy the whole movie and then at the end they give her a few lines to try and make her character matter. Another thing that angered me was the lines they give the robots, why are they all using slang? They are a millions year old race of robots and they use our slang? But I think that sums up the problem with this movie, Michael Bay took a good story and changed it into a stupid pop culture music video. Also, I am waiting for him to make a movie where all people do is get out of cars, apparently his signature scene. I also hated the Star Trek line they threw in at the end. This is more than just a bad movie, its an insult to movie goers, Michael Bay is telling us this is what you like. I hate myself for going to see this movie, but I am a sucker for the blockbuster and so I found myself sitting in the theatre wringing my hands. I would love to see Christopher Nolans take on this story, not sure if this is his style but at least he would spend more than 10 minutes writing the story.
Creature of Darkness (2009)
Not worth anyone's time
Basically, this is a terrible movie. The acting is probably the worst part, not surprising with actors I have never heard of before. Even Devon Sawa, who I have seen in past movies and was usually an OK actor, is really bad. The dialogue is some of the most clichéd and ridiculous I have heard in a movie. In particular, the dancing scene early in the movie where the girls talk about the guys, unbelievable.
The effects in the movie are not too bad considering what I assume was a low budget. The "creature of the dark" is surprisingly good and definitely the best actor in the movie.
Not a movie I would recommend to anyone.
