Elvis (2022)
A mixed bag with a strong lead performance
This movie was a little strange for me.
I came in the theaters expecting to watch an epic biopic but it wasnt anything close to that. Everything was so political somehow and you really felt that Baz Lurhman was pushing down his agenda down your throat. I came here to watch Elvis´ life and biography not have a history lesson on why racism is bad.
I was expecting something else than what i saw but im not completely disapointed.
The good:
-Austin Butler was simply amazing, and he truly carries this movie. He showed some remarkable acting and he is a very charismatic actor. I would dare to say it was an oscar worthy performance
- The elvis songs
The Bad:
- Terrible pacing and editing. The first half of the movie gave me nausea it felt like everything was going at supersonic speed and the second half was much slower.
- Tom hanks was simply miscasted. Sorry but his fake dutch accent is not believable at all and its simply annoying to listen to. He should not have been in this movie. Also it felt like he was the main character and Elvis was a side character in his own movie. Tom hanks had too much screen time and his performance was quite bad.
- modern trap rap songs in a film about Elvis Presley seriously?? What is wrong with the people who made this film? I simply dont understand the choice of some of the songs.
I wish there had been more of Elvis´ personal life on screen and not merely his relationship with his manager. Also there was not enough Elvis songs in it.
Its worth a watch but i wasnt blown away. 6,5/10.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The greatest cinematic experience i´ve ever had
Original, weird, unique, funny, action packed, emotionally poignant, brilliant casting, acting, pacing, editing, great story.. This film has it all and I cannot seem to find any flaws. A true masterpiece that will be remembered through the ages.
You will laugh and cry; this movie is a rollercoster ride from start to finish.
I walked out of the theater feeling my life had been greatly enhanced.
Thank you for making this, i really needed it.
Operation Mincemeat (2021)
Decent but way too long
Its an okay WW2 drama but this film should have been 25min shorter.
Solid cast and good cinematography but nothing to write home about.
Also i don´t understand why they added the whole romantic tension between the 2 main male/female characters, it was useless and led nowhere. And also the subplot about the brother being a spy was also useless and led nowhere.
The Northman (2022)
Well crafted adventure epic lacking depth (& trailer better than film)
I have to say that i´m a huge fan of Robbert Eggers and I really enjoyed Witch (2015) and Lighthouse (2019). If you didn´t like those movies I don´t think you will like this one.
The atmosphere of this film reminded me of the videogame skyrim at times which is nice. The acting is mostly good (although the fake scandinavian accent sometimes strange) but the first 15min seem a little "off" with clumsy performances that feel too theatrical/over the top at times.
The film is overall too long with many useless scenes of shamanic pagan rituals (typical of the director) that made me feel dizzy.
The cinematography is excellent, the visuals are exceptional and the music is great.
What is lacking in this film is a good story with a real Hero´s journey arc where the main character´s motives and choices have a real impact on the plot. This movie is simply a very predictable "revenge story" with a small twist at the end. The action scenes were good.
Over all i want to give this movie a 6.5/10 but its not possible. Its well made and enjoyable but i wouldn´t watch it twice.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Very average movie that gets better towards the end
First of all, what is up with those fake french accents? Its really annoying. The 5min intro of Hercule Poirot´s youth in WW1 what completely unnecessary and it feels like the actor started learning the language 1 week prior to shooting the scene. You don´t need to hire a native french speaker for the role but jeez at least get an actor with some basic French abilities. This is just aweful.
Apart from Emma Mackey´s performance, the overall the acting is just clumsy and the tone of the movie feels almost parodical at times (i dont know if this was intentional). Death on the Nile tries to be everything: a comedy, thriller, crime, drama, romance, but fails at most of these.
I was bored to death throughout most of the film but fortunately it gets better and more interesting towards the end.
In general: a very forgetable experience with a couple of good scenes that save the movies from being complete garbage.
Its watchable and sometimes entertaining but overall very average.
