Rose by Martin Sherman (2020)
Absolutely amazing, Worth 20/10
When I started to watch I thought 2 1/2 hours performed by a single actor on a very Jewish subject would be tedious; thank goodness I kept going.
Not only was the story fascinating and covered a huge timeline that I couldn't stop. She delivered a flawless performance of unprompted dialogue, but not only that she lived the story
I am completely in awe of anyone who could learn and deliver that amount of dialogue.
I would be surprised if many modern actors could come anywhere close with their 5 minute takes and re-takes.
It is a pity that it took so long to award her Damehood when many folks get awards for just reading the news, or more absurdly, for getting paid obscene salaries for just kicking a ball.
The only comparable piece was "Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell" with Peter O'Toole.
Chaos (2005)
GOOD WITH TWISTS BUT LET DOWN BY PLOT HOLES
Generally enjoyed it but a huge plot hole showed up near the end. As Snipes shot the girl hostage and Statham shot the gangster, the first thing the autopsy would have shown up was 2 different bullets belonging to 2 different cops. End of movie at the start
Free Fire (2016)
90 POINTLESS MINUTES
Nothing but bang bang, bang, bang for 90 minutes for absolutely no reason. Guns that never emptied, shots missed at point blank range and people still crawling round shot up like a cullender.
A shoot-up can be worth watching, but not this one.
The Neon Demon (2016)
ATTEMPT TO COPY DARIO ARGENTO'S SUSPIRA
Suspira is a visually sumptuous experience with incredible audio, a film to immerse yourself in. Neon Demon has tried to replicate the style, music and even theme of Suspira. It is a passible attempt but falls way short.
The colour saturation; dominant haunting music; long corridor & door shots; long slow non-action; vampires replacing witches; lesbian theme - these all reflect Suspira.
Enjoy this film but for a special experience watch the original.
The Magic Box (1951)
A beautifully filmed and acted British gem with 60 film stars
A beautifully filmed and acted British gem. I have the Studio Canal release which I think is very good for picture and sound. For its age the colour is excellent, perhaps due to William Friese-Greene. As you are watching it you have to keep pausing and rewinding to see which film star you thought you saw in the crowd. It is amazing; the cover says "SEE 60 FAMOUS FILM STARS". How the director got so many stars to appear, some for just a few seconds is astonishing. If you get the chance watch this film. I am a Margaret Rutherford fan and was delighted to see her cameo role here. It was only short but adds to my collection.
Don't Worry About Me (2009)
What a great little film made with sincere affection for Liverpool
This was David Morrissey's first venture into screen writing and he has created a delightful homage to his hometown. It is a very gentle story with a very simple plot about relationships. I feel he was on a winner with the original story by the gorgeous Helen Elizabeth who also starred in the piece. There isn't any CGI or heavy action just a delightful character driven drama. If you come from the North West like me it is a sure fire winner. It is a pity that small films like this don't get more publicity - it has just been given very small billing in the Radio Times and shown at 11.45 pm on Sunday night! - what a shame. I hope that Morrissey can now generate backing for another go and especially that we can see more of Helen Elizabeth.
