Strayed toward the mid-point
I just think this was not a finished script. It's like the story needed developing more. It had so much potential
Black Summer (2019)
Not great
The performances are very inauthentic right from the start. The producers I think are trying to hard to create the documentary feel with the single takes and it makes it awkward and unnatural - too attached to the single take. Not great.
Slaughterhouse Rulez (2018)
Indulgent
Even ardent fans of Simon Pegg will find this movie under parr. Of course the chemistry is great between him and Frost and the acting is great but the story didn't work.

Matriarch (2018)
Disturbing. Gripping. A must for fans of true indie.
At a budget of $45,000 you can't get anymore indie than this. Matriarch will trade punches with a lot of multi-million dollar movies and put many to shame.
Matriarch shows a couple's desperate fight to stay alive while trapped in a remote farmhouse inhabited by an evil and sinister family.
Its a slick production, head and shoulders above most low budgets or indeed any micro budget I've ever seen. The acting is superb and highly realistic. And astonishingly there's some 'laugh-out-loud' moments.
Matriarch is not your average bloody horror or a jumpy fright fest, instead it burrows into your psyche with chilling nightmarish scenarios that are often hard to watch. It takes you to places where your mind doesn't want to go and is nothing short of an emotional roller coaster.
There is nothing scarier than being alone and lost in a place you don't know, but being held captive against your will is the stuff of nightmares.
Matriarch is a powerful horror / thriller film which builds on your own fears and plays with them in ways you won't expect. The movie is an original, thrilling and disturbing survival story which delves deep into the horrors of being stranded in a rural hell.
While many independent horror films take influence from elsewhere, Matriarch doesn't fit any particular mould, it finds its own niche on its own soil and runs with it.
Also worth mentioning that this movie was apparently shot for less than Blair Witch Project and in less time. An unbelievable achievement by the filmmakers which leads me to ask: what could they do if they get a decent budget? Ones to watch out for I think.
Matriarch is an impressive, thought-provoking film which leaves you wondering what would happen if you ended up in the same situation.
Get Out (2017)
Just ok. Overrated
Massive holes in this script. It's too long and a veeeeery slow start.
Acting is incredible though and definitely worth a watch.
Pet Sematary (2019)
Doesn't hit the mark
For all the producing power and money they had to make this you'd think they'd stick to the book and make it for the fans. I doubt the producers are actual King fans. Shame. Opportunity missed.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Has everything you want!
Jump scares. Bugs crawling out of mouths. Ghosts. Spooky houses. Just watch it and enjoy.

It Follows (2014)
Bizarre, eerie - I like!!!!
So bleak and scary - loved the weirdness and oddity that it brought.
Most contemporary horror films underestimate the audience's intelligence, with jumps and obvious "twists." But It Follows refuses to dumb anything down. Its story about a girl who becomes infected with a mysterious, relentless curse is smart and original - not to mention scary as!!!!
Writer-director David Robert Mitchell's film also works in canny nods to slasher films past. It also boasts a terrific lead performance by Maika Monroe (last seen in another innovative-yet-retro horror entry, The Guest.) And it contains the most artful production values we've seen in a genre movie in some time
Black Site (2018)
Like a student film
So much potential. I love the idea but it was not executed well. I think it needed a more experienced director / producer team. I do think there's potential with these guys though.
