Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma (1975)
Too much shock value without enough actual validity
This film has been hyped for ages as being beyond grotesque and brilliant as well. I think it is neither. All but for the scene in which the girl eats the food full of nails seem rather scripted and orderly. There is no real sense of tension. What the film has to say about Fascism and power seems to be no different from any other text, it just takes longer to say it. It slow, and repetitive and just does nothing interesting, makes no new or insightful comments about the world it's deriding. Sure power corrupts, sure at the heights of dominance only the most perverse things can elicit any response, but what does that mean. What is the authors viewpoint other than "This is bad, I do not like it". He want to show us the horror's of the world, to make us see what we chose to ignore, but just showing us this world isn't enough. The scenes with the musician seem to try and give us that viewpoint, but never seem to go anywhere. I suggest "Sweet Movie" to anyone looking for something truly surreal and with actual content.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Funniest Movie Ever!!!
This film was hilarious, I have never seen anything like it. Half a billion dollars and two successful predecessors and this is what you get? The acting and dialog was so bad that everyone was laughing at the most dramatic moments. Spidey become some emo kid with a bad wardrobe and worse haircut. Even worse only one of the baddies could manage to act, but the Venom CGI ruined even that. This was a special midnight showing in every theater of the multiplex and it didn't even sell out. Oh, and expect to see at least 40 metric tons of Spiderman merchandise. Toby McGuire is a total hack, or maybe it's just the severe lack of plausible dialog. Definitely see this move, it's classic.
American Dreamz (2006)
Like Saved but darker.
Mandy Moore once again plays the bitch... and with great results! This film has a very similar look and feel as her previous film "Saved". However this movie never strays from the target of lampooning the nation, where "Saved" ends on an optimistic not this film ends on a "terroristic" one. In some ways it have more in common with "Heathers" and it really shouldn't be missed. The story follows two intersecting plots. One of an "American Idol" rip off game show and the other the story of an alter ego of president Bush who starts to realize maybe the world does have some shades of gray. One of the finer points in the minimalist casting, to pack the film with as much satire as possible each character represent a whole which keeps you from getting lost in a slew of character. I mean there are far too many people to mock in the administration and two to many idol judges. It was a smart move to clear out the clutter and make the movie as lean as possible. All in all an excellent dark comedy.
The Servant (1963)
Classic British drama becomes fantastic American comedy!
This movie must have been one of the greatest movies of its time. With great cinematography that still holds up today. The one problem is the level of bluntness in the symbolism. I guess people read less into the subtext back then. Anyways, at a local viewing tonight we couldn't stop laughing at the "subtle like a brick to the head" homosexual undertones and the many falic images. At one point the "Masters" crotch is 'set on fire' by a clearly prearranged camera angle that captures the most sexual energy you could ever hide in one still shot. While the artfulness still holds true today, it can't help but be funny. I gave it a 10 out of 10 for it's greatness both as a serious drama and a beautiful comedy.
Secretary (2002)
A great movie, that actualy understands SI.
This is the first movie I've seen invovling SI(self injury) that is any good at all. In fact it's great. Never have you seen a more twisted love story since the movies of Tim Burton(Beatlejuice, Edward Scisor Hands).
Light It Up (1999)
Great movie about inner city public schools
This film is a stirring tale of the events of a day at an inner city public school. Where a few of the students end up holding a police officer hostage. This film really shows the way students in the innner city can be pigeon holed into a horrible situation.
Shao Lin da peng da shi (1980)
In my opinion the best Kung-Fu movie ever.
I saw this movie once on late night t.v. and knew it was the best movie ever. This is one of the few Kung-Fu movies with a decent plot. The progression of the main character is seamless. The whole movie is great!
