Star Trek: Discovery: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 (2019)
Oh dear...My plot hole ganglia have been triggered!
I appreciate the effort made to give this episode a cinematic quality, but a bit more money should have been spent on coherent writers, and maybe a bit less on blue and green lasers. It's unfair to compare any other series to GoT, but their big battle episodes are truly magnificent and unforgettable. This was more of a mess of effects. I have a number of specific beefs with this episode.
1. Given how critical it is to get the time suit working and Burnham and Discovery to the future, and that it took longer than expected to charge the time crystal, it would have been a good idea to have built it before they were involved in a battle.
2. Burnham is annoying, because at the most time sensitive moments, right throughout the series, she feels the need to delay her decisive action to give some exposition to her emotions at that moment. How many people died, I wonder, while she was saying bye bye to Spock.
3. Why would you not fit an emergency override for the blast doors on the outside as well as the inside? In fact, the whole photon torpedo story line was stupid. EVERY story does not need to sacrifice a main character to be complete...that is just lazy, hackneyed story telling.
4. The whole Queen Po thing had the feel of a "deus ex machina", especially if, like me, you haven't seen the mini episodes. When I saw the catch up for the previous episode, I thought, "I don't remember any of that happening with Tilly and this odd girl."
5. When Leland came on board, surely the plan was rendered meaningless, as the idea was to hide Discovery from him in the future.
6. When Leland was killed by Georgiou, and she announced this as they were heading for the rift, wouldn't that have been a great time to stop and not abandon themselves in the future?
7. It is ridiculous to suggest that despite all the crew and shuttle pilots involved in the battle, all the Klingons and all the Kelpians, Star Fleet would not find out what actually became of discovery.
8. A kung fu style fight...seriously!
I did like some things about the episode.
A. Rebecca Romjin's styling and performance perfectly captured the essence of TOS.
B. I have liked Spock throughout the series, even if he does get used a little too much for exposition.
Overall, I enjoyed the series, and I gave it seven stars. This episode, as a finale, left more than a little to be desired.
Stargate Origins (2018)
Cringeworthy and Annoying
Very very bad!
Each 6 or 7 minute episode features about 5 minutes of the male and female lead arguing with each other in a very annoying fashion. Hackneyed, stereotyping scripts and montages coupled with terrible acting and completely unsympathetic characters.
Salvage (2006)
Nice little movie. But you need to get it to appreciate it!
Given the constraints of the budget, this was an excellent hour and a half's entertainment. The lead actors were excellent and the plot was imaginative and original.
It seems to me that those slagging off the film didn't actually understand the plot. Maybe they should stick to the big Hollywood movies that take pains to explain every twist so even the stupid can watch! The advantage of low budget indy films is that the viewer has to make some deductive leaps himself.
I, for one, spent some time in the movie working out exactly what was going on. Was she dead? What was the relationship to the killer? Why was the mother so creepy? But the ending, when it came, was still a surprise.
