Class Warfare (2001)
Good movie - some surprises, too!
The actors seemed to be pretty well cast, and the plot twists were good. :) The ending is probably a little "too pat", but hey, at least there's justice in the world. And at the end there's a kind of revelation about how it all got started. ;)
As a native to British Columbia, I want to say again how amusing it is that the movie was set in Washington state, but the whole film was done in Vancouver and environs, as well as having the Government of Canada logo prominently displayed in the closing credits as being a grantor of money for the film project. *grin*
Split Second (1992)
Funny and somewhat scary at the same time...
I saw this once in the early 1990s, and thought it was pretty good. I didn't rent it again until several years later, and watched it again - the second time was even better, because I loved watching Hauer be such a smartass, having seen him in other movies with his characteristic smartass-ness. :)
Lord of the Flies (1990)
Not a good adaptation
I could nitpick for ages about this film - however I will confine it to mentioning that numerous anachronisms abound in the movie - while it's supposed to be reasonably faithful to the original novel to the point of the children not knowing what day it is, or what time it is, the actors can be seen wearing watches in several scenes. Add in the excessive use of swear-words among the children, and it definitely leaves something lacking that exists in the novel.
Ironically enough, I saw the movie first before reading the novel, but grew to enjoy the novel much more than the movie.
I hope to one day see the black and white 1960s-era version.
The Package (1989)
Interesting...
I find it interesting that this movie seems to foreshadow the origins of today's right-wing militia groups - witness the same easy spillover of ex-military personnel and the cheaply done anti-communist propaganda (which looks a lot like the cheaply done white supremacist/anti-left-wing literature that gets put out today).
The Candidate (1972)
Good movie - Food for thought.
I saw the reviews of this movie and I figured I'd give it a shot. It lived up to expectations, but not in the way that I thought. I had rather expected a "1970s Bulworth". Someone who would hit hard, keep hitting hard and never let up, although not using rap to get the point across.
What I actually saw was a realistic story of an idealist's struggles with politics and publicity, as well as the effect on someone's family life. The ending made me stop and think for a while about how the struggle for change can be a tough row to hoe.
I would recommend this movie for anyone who wants to go into politics, since it's a realistic story of the pressures inherent in dealing with the pressures and the "powers-that-be" involved.
Antitrust (2001)
Good movie overall (Possible spoilers)
As the subject line says there may be spoilers in this comment.
I saw the movie just last night, and I thought it kicked ass in places and was really corny in other places. Part of the corniness factor was because a lot of it was filmed right here in Vancouver, BC, Canada where I live :) The "NURV HQ" outside shot, for example, is just Simon Fraser University, where I once attended classes :)
As to other aspects of it being filmed in Vancouver and environs, you have to be aware of relatively minor differences in road construction to really be able to tell :)
What I appreciated about the movie is that it wasn't laden with buzzwords, unlike Hackers, and the director and producer(s) tried to ensure the technical accuracy of the terminology and commands used, for the most part.
The other corny part about this movie is that Ryan Philippe, although a definite "cute face" for the movie, doesn't really seem to be cast right. He sounds almost as though he can't say the complex words properly that his character has to rattle off with ease. Other than that, everybody else seems to be appropriately cast, and the movie works well even with Ryan Philippe's somewhat inconsistent volubility.
