The Toad (2019)
Something strange
I happened to catch this at NOLAIFF, I was told expect the strange. This no budget indie delivered on that promise. In the first act I thought oh no this is low budget wannabe Lynch or Cronenberg but by the last act I had changed my tune to this is low budget weirdness influenced by Lynch or Cronenberg, but certainly it's own beast. It kept me guessing and entertained, my only real complaint was at a svelte hour and 20 minute runtime when the end rolled around I had so many questions left.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Beautiful and haunting
This is probably my favorite film from Lanthimos, as stated above the cinematography is just gorgeous and the performances are stellar, the story is sad and haunting at times thoroughly devastating. 10 out 10
The Favourite (2018)
Great performances... still overrated
As a fan of both The Lobster and Killing of Sacred Deer I was so excited for this film. After my first watch I walked out feeling like I'd seen what are undeniably some of the year's best performances in a film that just felt overall a bit underwhelming. There are certainly scenes that work but I couldn't shake my feeling of being a bit let down. 6 out of 10.
Chained for Life (2018)
Wow
All I can say is Jess Wexler is an absolute revelation. I was so lucky to catch this at NOLAFF and I was blown away. If you have no idea what the film is about please just just take my advice and give it a chance you will not regret it!
Slasher House (2012)
Fast paced gorefest but always fun
I caught this film at an indie foreign horror fest in Baton Rouge. It sounded to be honest like something that I may not enjoy but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. The two leads are strong and the fast pace really kept me on the edge of my seat.
