Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies (2023)
Absolutely Fantastic!
I think some of the people reviewing forget the fact that this is FICTION. Who cares if it's not historically accurate? It's not a biopic. It's not a documentary. It's a fun, bubble gum musical with incredible talent. The music is beautiful and fun. The characters are zany and cheesy in the best way. I LOVE that it's tackling issues that maybe wouldn't have been tackled at the time. It's about girl power. It's about cultural diversity. It's a show about the underdogs fighting to be treated fairly. I wasn't sure during the first episode. But it just gets better and better every episode. I can't pick a favorite character because I love all of them! Nancy is especially hilarious. But Olivia has an INSANE voice. But Jane is so endearing and strong. And Cynthia so unapologetically herself. Fantatsic show for anyone who has ever felt like an outcast.
Skinamarink (2022)
Not even bad. Just...nothing.
I can usually find SOMETHING I like about a film. But there is nothing I liked a out this. It's nothing but a series of shots of ceilings and walls and the occasional toy. There are a few lines of "dialogue" from horrible child actors and the occasional creepy voice. But nothing happens. Nothing happens at all for an hour and 40 minutes. When you think something might happen...it doesn't. Many people are saying this fed on primal childhood fear, but I found nothing about it to be remotely scary. I just found it annoying. I kept looking at my watch and signing hoping it would just end. There is no character development whatsoever, so there's nothing to care about. It's just walls and darkness with occasional weird things happening. I never thought I could hate a movie as much as I hate this. My biggest issue with so many films coming out is the fact that so many are filmed so dark that you can't see anything. This takes that trend and magnifies it. The majority of the audience walked out of the theater I was in. I wish I would have. I could lay in bed and stare at the corner of my ceiling in the dark and get more than I got out of this film.
This reminded me very much of that video they have to watch in The Ring...but with less visuals and plot. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna die in 7 days.
Something to Talk About (1995)
GREAT FILM!!!
Wow, I am amazed at some of the negative comments I've seen on this board. This film is one of my all time favorites. The humor is smart and witty. Julia Roberts Plays the perfect estranged wife. I must say though, Kira Sedgwick steels the show! Her character is so upbeat and funny. This movie was very well written, has a great cast, and beatiful cinematography. It's a heartwarming tale of familes and small towns. I highly recommend this movie.
Valentine (2001)
had potential... highly disappointing.
BE FOREWARNED...MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS As a huge fan of horror movies, and a huge fan of David Boreanaz, I went into this movie with extremely high hopes. The premise was good... nerdy kid grows up and goes after the snobs that made fun of him... granted, it's been done, but I found the whole creepy Valentine's and cherub mask to be a interesting twist. The movie had a decent cast, with some excellent up and coming's like the afore-mentioned David Boreanaz, Marley Shelton, and Katherine Heigel, as well as the well-known Denise Richards. All of this said, the movie was oozing with potential, but fell quite short.
Was it the lack of a plot that made sense, or a lack of convincing dialogue? Is it sad the only character that really seemed to interest me was a side character named Scary Gary that portrayed Marley Shelton's neighbor? The guy had no more than 5 lines, but I found him to be the most amusing character. I'm thinking that the worst part of this movie had to be the writing. The story had 3 or four subplots that had no bearing on the rest of the story, and consequently made no sense. There was about 20 minutes of the movie that took place inside a tasteless maze at an art show. The whol e scene was ridiculous and didn't go along with the rest of the movie. The charcter "Campbell" also seemed to have no point to the story. There was also a bedroom scene between Denise Richards and a charcter named "Brian", that although incredibly amusing, had ABSOLUTELY NO POINT. Personally, I am still confused about the ending. Nothing was wrapped up. I left the movie confused and disgusted. This movie was supposed to be based on the novel by the same title. I found out today that the writers of the screenplay didn't even READ the novel. They only used the title. No wonder it was terrible.
Now, I have grown up under the assumption that horror movies were supposed to be.. well... scary. With maybe even, god forbid, a little gore. This movie fell short on all accounts. It was too predictable to be scary, and there was no gore. No blood. I have to say, the best death scene involed a power drill and a hot tub...
All in all, this movie was a waste of outstanding talent. The only saving grace was the performances of David Boreanaz and Marley Shelton. Both are phenomenal performers, and I hope this movie doesn't impede their careers. My reccommendation, if there is a person in this movie who you would like to see on the big screen for two hours, then go see it. Other than that, don't spend the $7.75 to watch it.
