Napoleon (2023)
Battle scenes are top notch.
Sadly that's about all i can say, it's been criticised all over.
Although its been blasted as historically inaccurate i was still hoping to be entertained.
Here's my short review as i saw the film;
At 2 hours 38 minutes a little too much Josephine and not enough Napoleon, the end.
However that review is sadly too short for the IMDB and the film too long although i can live with that if I'm being entertained and for some of the movie i was, as for the rest it was at times a little confusing. Ridley Scott is one of the best as far as I'm concerned and we are all allowed an off day are we not?
Now who do i see about a refund?
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
Its not Wandavision
Wandavision had everything this show was lacking, this show could not have been more political if it had tried. If you have to, make a point and move on, but it couldn't, it got to a point where I was counting how many political and anti-white statements it was making, instead of rooting for the Falcon I was starting to dislike him, not his fault, blame the writers. While on the subject the villains were a bit mediocre, however Bucky was very likeable but pushed to the background, Zemo was good and unpredictable, and that was pretty much it. If there is another season of this nonsense I will not be watching. This isn't entertainment, it's a political platform.
Dare Me (2019)
Is this going anywhere except into obscurity?
I'm not the most patient person, but when it comes to TV and Film I'm prepared to give anything a chance. However with this series I'm not sure how much longer I can wait, in the preview it said and I quote "A cheerleader in her senior year of high school plots revenge against the clique that expelled her". When does this happen, in Season 2? Yes there's some petty bickering and some seriously nasty backward glances, but recently it focuses on the coach and her boyfriend. Despite my gut feeling I will watch it out, then regret it probably and avoid season 2, if it happens, like the plague.
Graveyard Carz (2011)
How to restore Mopars
If your not into classic American iron move along now. This isn't American Hotrod or Overhaulin, it's how you should restore classic Mopars to factory spec, even the odd totalled wreck can be brought back to life, hence the title. Even down to correct nuts bolts and washers. Mark Worman is a stickler for detail and authenticity, something you don't find often and it follows all the way through a build right down to the fully restored car. There's still a lot of messing around, name calling and a bit of acting the fool, but as well as showing great restorations getting underway, it's made for TV, some people enjoy the clowning around, i can take it or leave it. If you didn't enjoy series one don't worry, series two is far better, more cars and more restoration work being done, and occasional glimpses of new workshop equipment and what it does. I hope there's going to be a third series please.
Strike the Tent (2005)
Time well spent
OK, first and foremost i like good "realistic" war films, secondly i like films even better if they are based on fact. This was both, and a bonus to both of those critical points is the lead role, who is a descendant of the "historical" character who is the main focus of the film. My wife enjoyed the film too, hard to find a film both of you can watch knowing there's going to be some bloodshed mixed in with a love story, but it works and it works well. Its hard to tell at times this is not a big budget film, but reading about it elsewhere you know its not and you can appreciate it even more. You can see there's a lot of personal effort gone into getting this film made. You see so many people on here saying "well thats 90 minutes of my life wasted" well this is just the opposite, i wish it had been longer, you get a great insight into some real peoples lives during the civil war, and the authentic backdrops and locations just add to its quality.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Not as bad as you think.
Having read a few reviews i did'nt expect much, but surprise, it was very watchable. Just towards the end it got a little repetitive, but thats the nature of the film in a way. Ok its not a mega expensive production, [is there such a thing as a cheap film tho?] and maybe might get passed over because of it. Worth a watch tho even so.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Argh never again
After reading all the hype i decided to watch it. I just wish i had'nt.
Maybe i was expecting something else, maybe IT should have been something else. I can say this, if you think you are going to enjoy being in Japan on your own, forget it, unless you can find a friend. This seemed to be the main thrust of the film, although it could be true of any country, where you do not know the language or customs. I did like the insight into Japanese life that you were presented with, however i could have bought a National Geographic DVD for that. The film needed something else to get it going, and i sort of hoped all the way through that the moment would come. Alas it never did. If you must watch it, do so, everyone sees things differently, this was just too different for me.
Insomnia (2002)
Spoiler [read no further if you have not seen it!!]
Murder stories are not new , however original plot twists can be, [dont read any further if you have NOT watched it] the one thing it does have going for it. Yes it starts off, as the usual "who killed the college girl in a small sleepy town" [not sleepy enough for Mr Pacino unfortunately hence "Insomnia"] and tends to amble along at an unhurried pace. But then due to an unfortunate twist Mr Pacino ends up killing his partner accidently [we hope]. How unlucky can someone be, only more so when it turns out his fleeing murder suspect [Robin Williams] sees the whole show. Worse still when he winds up fixing evidence, telling lies and generally not being as "straight" a cop as he should be. The fact his partner was about to do a deal with "internal affairs" regarding Mr Pacinos handling of a previous case makes "our hero,s" conscience even more uneasy. From then on its our murder suspect calling the shots, blackmailing our slightly tarnished hero, and the pace of the film steps up a bit as Al wrestles with his conscience, evidence, and its obvious that things are slowly going against him.Its certain Miss Swank is on to him, that theres something wrong, but of course the film is now nearing its climax [theres an inevitable shoot out] until the film all winds up very neatly, with no loose ends. Al dies, Robin Williams dies, leaving Hilary Swank [who was almost the next victim] to either bury the evidence [regarding Al,s misdeeds] or make it public, you are left with the feeling she will make it all known. All the main characters are believable, but we hear little of their lives, loves, or background, and maybe we do not need to. The cast is relatively small, so keeping track of whos who, is nice and easy for a change.Credit to the make-up dept for making Mr Pacino look like he had not slept for months, made me tired just watching him try to stay awake. One of the better "who dunnits" of recent times , but just not quite reaching that "greatness", but well worth watching.
Space Patrol (1963)
Watch out Gerry Anderson.......
Well it would have been, except it seems he prospered and Roberta Leigh did not [nothing against Gerry by the way]. Thats not the exact truth but pretty close. Although done on a very low budget the models were not as detailed as Gerrys, the "puppets" however [well they were better than puppets] were very well detailed for their time and all had their own personalities. It would have been interesting if someone had thrown enough money at Roberta Leighs company, things might have been very different. It might have been nice as a kid, to watch two people with a similar idea, going about things in their own way.
