The Rest of Us (2019)
Surprisingly effective
This movie was better than I expected. While I'm a fan of Heather Graham movies, ordinarily they are rather quirky. This time the story contained well hidden twists which gave it a deeper resonance. Everyone was excellent and the two young actresses both stood out as well.
Wedding Season (2022)
Well made, great dancing and songs
Is it predictable? Of course, it's a rom com. The acting was solid, the songs and the dancing were great. The chemistry of the leads was convincing, and the pressure that parents put on their high achieving kids was all too real. I would probably say 81/2 rather than 9, but it's well worth the time. Which by the way it's half as long as typical Bollywood movies.
To the Stars (2019)
A female version of The Last Picture Show?
I watched this movie primarily because of past performances by the leads Kara Hayward in Moonrise Kingdom and Liane Liberto in several films. I was immediately struck by the way it seemed to cover much of the same terrain as Peter Bogdovich's The Last Picture Show, but with the focus on girls. The same sense of the emptiness of small town life, the desperation felt by some residents both old and young, intolerance and ignorance by the locals of what and who they don't understand. I wouldn't claim its the equal of The Last Picture Show, one of the greatest of American movies, but it's interesting to see a different take on the same milieu and themes .Not a perfect film but one which makes crystal clear why so many people leave rural America, never to return.
Shadowplay (2020)
Outstanding depiction of postwar Germany
This is an outstanding series. The presence of Nina Hoss and Sebastian Koch suggest it will be of high quality. Taylor Kitsch was a revelation. Those criticizing the depiction of Russians ignore the feelings that postwar Germans actually had. There were no saints but some sinners were worse than others is an attitude that clearly depicted.
Emily Owens M.D. (2012)
A great show.
This is an excellent show that I started watching because I thought it would remind me of Scrubs. And it does but it's totally original. I was sorry we only got one season. Mamie Gummer headlines a great cast!
The Way You Look Tonight (2019)
Strange but engrossing
Very strange but nonetheless I interesting story. Relevant to contemporary times in not quite believable ways.
Someone Great (2019)
More interesting co-stars than leads.
I would rather see a film about the two female co-stars. I found them way more interesting than Gina Rodriguez and Lakeith Stanford.
Surprise Me! (2017)
Misleading cast position, script makes no sense.
This is a terrible movie. I only watched it because Nicole Sullivan was listed first and after seeing her play quirky sidekicks in Scrubs and Cougartown, I thought it would be interesting to see her ina leading role. But she's not the lead and the movie otherwise makes no sense. And the ending is absurd.
Cousins (1989)
Under appreciated classic!
I had forgotten how much I loved this film. I enjoyed the original Cousin Cousine which I saw when it came out. This one has the glamor of major stars. The Danson Rossellini pairing is superb. I'm only sorry there was never a sequel. I don't think any of the leads - Danson, Rossellini, Peterson, Young, have ever been better. I know the grandmother was there for comic relief. I could have done with less of her. Altogether it is superb.
Two Million Stupid Women (2009)
Charming Russian doll like story.
What makes this movie is the story hidden inside the main story. And Katy Stoll is a gem. I hope she and all the leads get more work.
Coup de foudre (1983)
A classic
The first time I saw this film I thought it was a rip off of Jules and Jim which is one of the greatest movies of all time. Subsequent viewings have allowed me to appreciate this film in its own right. Entre Nous is a wonderful movie with two of the greatest actresses ever in Miou Miou and Isabelle Huppert. While a prior poster believes men cannot appreciate this film I disagree. As a man who has seen this repeatedly I believe it is a great great film about female friendship and the difficulties(perhaps inherent) in relationships. I don't know if that justifies a spoiler but just to be on the safe side I am checking the spoiler box.
