Missed Chance
14 February 2011
I finally saw this on DVD recently, and I think it was a missed chance. While I enjoyed Zach Braff and Sarah Chalke, the new show only really seemed to gain focus after they left and the new cast came centre stage . It was definitely improving in leaps and bounds towards the end of the season. The characters were all nicely nuts, but in different ways to the original cast. I also liked the way that they were all pairing off early on in the show, which gave a different dynamic.

Finally, they were all several years younger than the original cast were at the start of Scrubs, as they were just starting out as medical students and hadn't chosen where they were going, rather than being newly qualified. More of a student vibe than anything else.

A great pity - I liked it.

America saves the world - again!

Very good film - the landing sequence at the start was phenomenal. The acting was of a uniformly high standard. A couple of things spoiled the film a bit for me.

The Germans are treated as 'Nazis', even when most Wermacht soldiers were just serving their country like everybody else. Also they seemed to be targets that got mown down in droves and were generally portrayed as less than human. I thought that went out in cinema a few years after the war ended.

Finally the only mention of the other allies is one disparaging comment about Montgomery's failure in front of Caen. Firstly he was facing most of the German armour that was dug into strongpoints, and secondly on D-Day and for a period after the British and Canadian troops out numbered the Americans. I wouldn't normally bother but Americans seem to view these films as historically accurate representations.

With the release of U571 this trend is getting even worse. The capture of the Enigma machine was carried out by a British destroyer crew - before America even entered the war!

The new Colditz movie is following this path. There were very few American POW's held there, and none of those escaped by the war's end.

Great Show

A pity we lost this after only one season. Great cop show with a twist. The matrix sequences were the closest I've seen to a realisation of William Gibson except for the film Johnny Mnemonic. Good cast especially Maria del Mar and Natalie Radford. I hope William Shatner gets round to writing some more novels some time.

A sad loss.

Another cool show killed before it's time. Every time a cool show comes on they kill it after a season. Well acted and good stories to boot. At least the films have kept it going in fine fashion.
