Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
laugh out loud stupid/funny movie
I have never laughed so hard in the theater. I was hoarse from laughing after seeing this movie.
This is one of those movies that had me thinking, "This is so stupid I can't believe I am laughing." Then I laughed anyway. The last movie that affected me that way was Billy Madison and I laughed harder at this one. I will buy this movie to keep in my movie collection for days when I just need to laugh at something silly.
I am a Kevin Smith fan so I did get most of the in-jokes but I think people who don't get these references will still laugh if they are able to enjoy dumb and silly humor without overanalyzing or punishing themselves for laughing at something naughty. This isn't a movie that teaches you important lessons about life so relax and laugh. Don't feel guilty about it. Just enjoy.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
I'm glad I haven't read the book yet.
When this movie was released, I was intrigued because I love Cusak and Spacey and have enjoyed Eastwood's movies. Then I read the reviews. All of the reviews I read whined that it wasn't as good as the book and it dragged. So I didn't go. Tonight I saw the movie on TV and I can't believe I listened to those reviews! This is a wonderful movie that should be judged on it's own merits and not disparaged because it is a movie and isn't just like a book. I know that it can be difficult to be objective when judging a movie based on a book that you love, but it is worth trying. (An example--I love the book The Shining, and I love the movie The Shining, even though the movie was not faithful to the book. It stands on it's own merits.) I am now looking forward to reading the book.
I enjoyed all of the characters very much, especially Lady Chablis. I think that the colorful characters add warmth and humor and that they teach Cusak's character important lessons and are therefore an important part of the plot and not minor annoyances or sidetracks as some people have commented. The people who found these characters annoying must have thought they were watching a thriller or a murder mystery with a linear did-he-or-didn't-he plot. This movie is more than that. We experience what the writer character experiences and see how it influences his behaviour and outlook. This is not just a courtroom drama, it is a personal journey. Cusak's character is affected by the entire atmosphere of the city and people around him not just by the events of the trial.
This movie is quirky, funny, touching and now I can't wait to read the book.
Strays (1991)
Bad but amusing.
This is one of those movies that you watch simply to see how bad it will get. I rate it a 3 out of 10 because I admit I enjoyed making fun of this movie. If you are allergic to cats like I am, you can almost relate to Kathleen Quinlan's panic at her house being surrounded by housecats! Oooh, scary! Is that heavy breathing caused by fear and panic? No, killer cat dander.
