Happy-Go-Lucky (2008)
Tripe
As I was at the petrol station holding the DVD in my hand, I should have been warned by the print on the back claiming that this film was "as exhilarating and refreshing as Amelie". Usually, remarks of this kind are bad news, and I should not have given this film the benefit of doubt by renting it.
The film's main character, Poppy, really is an air-headed person with a shallow life giggling at the silliest things, and I can hardly imagine a person more irritating to have about than her. This really haunts the viewer all along this flimsy film, all the way to the end. The only person somewhat saving the film is the driving instructor, but that's about it.
If you are ever to come across this film, and you haven't seen Amelie yet, then do yourself a huge favour and rent that one instead! How this film ever could be nominated for an Academy Award (I was astounded as I got to know that), and has won several other awards, is really beyond me.
Coyote Ugly (2000)
Extremely well-made...
...timewaster!
I saw this film together with my girly who had the opportunity to see this film in the cinema a few months back. The story is so thin, you couldn't call it a story, and it is clear that this film was made for highschool girlies, who don't bother about the senselessly dumb actors in it (apart from John Goodman and Johnny Knoxville :) If you share more than one braincell with anyone, use it on something better than watching this film. After I've seen it I'm quite surprised it actually made it to the silver screen. Probably because the title song was marketed as a hit. So, stay away from this film and do something more enjoyable! [I'll give it a 2 out of 10. 2, because there actually do exist even worse movies who deserve their 1 only place.]
Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo (1999)
A sorry excuse for a 'comedy'...
Okay, I felt like going to the video rentals' together with my gf to see what she'd find. She found Deuce Bigalow. We watched this film the very same day. It was hard to keep my attention to the TV screen. I could see all jokes and plot (twists?) coming from miles away. Jokes were very mediocre and dim-witted. Only TJ made me laugh 2 times (no more). If you're looking for a -good- comedy, leave this film at the rental house and go for whatever, Groundhog Day, The Party, Big Lebowsky, or anything British that's older than 3 years. Good luck!
Underground (1995)
Brilliant
This is one of those films that make my head go -wow- for hours afterwards. I hadn't seen any Kusturica film yet and didn't quite know what to expect apart from lively gypsy tales, and this was far far more than just that. It deals with the way the communist/socialist regime fools the people of Yugoslavia to believe something that isn't true. 'There are lies in everything'. This repeats when the film rolls into the wars of the 1990s. Same history over and over again, shown by the last title on screen: 'Ovaj pric nema kraj' (or similar, meaning that this story takes no end). The film shows also that any side could be bad or good, and that many evil actually comes from within. Watch this film and get equally stunned!
9 out of 10 (I never rate 10s)
The Party (1968)
A Comedy classic
I saw this film various times on TV, but since my girlfriend didn't yet see it, I decided to rent it. Although the rental shop didn't have the film in its catalogue, there appeared to be a copy among the other films. It was ages ago I had to laugh that much.It is simply a hilarious sight to see Peter Sellers play a timid nice man (the only nice guy in the film, apart from the cowboy), and also showed what cocktail parties were all about. Go see it yourself!
Djöflaeyjan (1996)
See a different film
See this film. It is well-filmed, spoken in a funny language, and simply catches you from the beginning to the end. See how the American Dream is dreamt in a desolate place under different circumstances. All filming perspectives here are pieces of art.
A Perfect Murder (1998)
A Perfect Movie?
No, I'm afraid it isn't. I had never heard of this film before I got to see it (on vcr). From this cast (Paltrow, Douglas) I expected better than this mediocre film which may just as well have been VCR-only released. The script was thin, unlogical in some ways, and pretentiously smart. Only at times it made me look up and pay extra attention as if it was to announce that something exciting was going to happen. Yet, I was wrong. If you go rent a videotape, rent something better than this so you won't regret having your evening and some money spent on something not worth that.
