Shinseiki Evangelion (1995)
For people who liked Akira...
Mind-bogglingly compelling- I watched the first twelve episodes one night by accident and I had to find out what I was watching. I have only two regrets: that it wasn't done in full animation (it's sometimes painful watching when you realize it's basically a bunch of static shots edited together), and that it wasn't another 26 episodes long. When I got to 24 I thought that the series was just warming up, not about to end with one more tape... what a let down. Basically the series just stops dead, which I imagine is why other people were disappointed too, not because the last two episodes are "too deep" and (SPOILER WARNING) don't have any fighting. The English voice acting on the dub sounds fine until you hear the original, then after that the dub just sounds cheesy because the Japanese acting goes beyond good, the best part of the show along with the character designs. Evangelion isn't the deepest thing in the world or the greatest thing since ballroom dancing, but as a total package it's rewarding viewing and beautiful in its own way, even with the mutilation of the ending, and it's a lot less vapid than most of the anime series I've seen so far- more like the real thing, probably the only one that starts to live up to the potential that Akira promised.
Denei shôjo Ai (1992)
oddly sweet
Strangely sad and touching romantic comedy/drama that should have gone on for more episodes. Pretty character designs, although Niimai-kun's hair is eccentric to the point of ridicule. Somehow the total effect of the show transcends the often bathetic and inane goings-on; this probably has a lot to do with Megumi Hayashibara's great voice acting, so I don't know what it would be like dubbed. Definitely worth checking out if subtitled.
The Incredible Torture Show (1976)
Man's inhumanity to man
This is easily the most embarrassing movie I have ever seen. A sad little piece of soft-core porn/exploitation so sleazy, shoddy, and degrading that it's an entirely new type of movie-going experience. This is not a recommendation; this movie takes boredom to the next level, becoming oddly fascinating after a while. Still, if you like to try everything once you may want to see this movie, but you'll probably feel sorry once you do.
