Tremors (1990)
Well acted horror spoof
Although the premise might seem cheesy, the giant man eating worms is surprisingly well done. Very good acting and effects mixed with well placed humor and oddball characters that grow on you. There's a lot of action while being relatively light on the horror. True, people are eaten by the worms, but it isn't graphic with few of the cheap tricks that lesser movies use to try to scare or shock you.
Fight Club (1999)
Gratuitous violence and vapid
Gratuitous violence and a cheesy made-for-teenagers twist at the end. I suspect that males under the age of 20 will love it, though. The drivel disguised as philosophy will fool the naive and someone, somewhere will be dumb enough to emulate the fighting. One or two visits to the hospital, though, will be enough to change most folks' minds.
El Norte (1983)
Extremely well done, cuts straight to the heart
This movie gives too healthy a dose of reality to make it in the Hollywood world of happy endings, car chases and chiseled looks. It is,however, extraordinary in its presentation of the difficulties that can be encountered by those in third world countries who then seek a better life in the US. Very powerful performances and wonderful story telling.
Hadley's Rebellion (1983)
A teenage wrestler struggles with growing up.
This was a pretty good statement of teenage angst. A young and talented wrestler struggles with growing up and what's right. The teenage years are told through the medium of wrestling, a sport that is largely unrecognized and under-appreciated, according to this film. A few elements of the plot are typically hollywood (the washed up mentor who could have been a contender), but the performances are just strong enough to take you back to your own high school years and revisit all that was right, or wrong, with them.
