Tig Notaro: Happy to Be Here (2018)
"Tigging This Standup Routine"
Yeah I used Tigging instead of digging to convey how I felt about this stand-up special, because that's how I roll. And Tig had me rolling with many of her bits during this routine.
I have Netflix and have watched (scratch that) tried to watch a lot of the stand-up specials on offer. And for me most fall flat. Of course, like many things, art is subjective and that's never more true than when it comes to comedy. Some things are going to make you laugh and some are not. Tig's sense of humor may not be for everyone, and not all of the jokes land. But I think this woman is smart and funny and very astute at observational humor. which is my thing. I didn't think it worked as well in her very short lived TV show "One Mississippi". But it works here.
If you enjoy comedians who are storytellers, and don't rely so much on one liners. Or making fun of others (which for me is a form of bullying not humor) then give this a shot.
I laughed, I smiled and at 8:30 in the morning left feeling pretty darn good about having stayed in bed late to watch. Thanks Tig!
Mommy Dead and Dearest (2017)
Amazing and Sad
Documentaries, when done well, are like great theater. Count "Mommy Dead and Dearest" among one of the best ever made. It also doesn't hurt that the filmmakers have an unbelievable fascinating story to work with.
"Gypsy Rose" sounds like a name for the title character in some form of art. But the story of her life is a tale best left for nightmares.
Just when you think that there is nothing else that could horrify or surprise you, along comes a story that turns that on its head.
It is going to take me a lifetime to forget what I just watched. I also now have a new added skepticism of or society, legal and justice system- all of which dropped the ball here.
Sometimes the worse solution may end up being the only solution.
Passengers (2016)
It was okay
It was okay. The critics were a little harsh, but I give it a solid 6 out of 10.
A man wrote it so it seems like the choices that were made were based on how men view the world. This is not a negative or positive criticism just an observation.
The overall message of the movie resonated but it did not conquer new ground. Then not too many films break new ground so that's okay.
The cinematography was great. The ship and it's perks and automation seemed plausible. If you're up for a movie that is entertaining and not boring or offensive then you could do worse.
Break out the popcorn and relax and enjoy.
The People's Court (1997)
Addicted
Funniest show on TV. You can't write this stuff. Just saw the one about the lady who sue'd her neighbor for $2000.00 for not returning her $3.99 copy of "Essence" Magazine! What!!!! Then she called child protective servicing on the woman 2 days before court because she as crying too much. It was also the first time I'd ever scene Judge Millian award damages for defamation.
Judge Millian called her crazy to her face. Sad thing was the woman admitted suffering from a Bipolar disorder.
Still funny show though.
With all of the other scripted and unscripted garbage, this at least allows you to learn something about the law AND human nature.
The Caller (2011)
Don't answer the phone! (Spoilers)
Any normal person would have stopped answering that annoying ringing phone after the first few times that nut on the other end called. Didn't Mary have enough going in her life than to put up with that crap?! Take it off the hook and leave it off. Nobody else appears to be calling her- except one call from her mother. Who I guess has her cell phone number. What day and age is it any way? Most people don't even have home phones anymore-especially young people.
Unless you are handicapped-why on earth would a single attractive woman with no friends or family nearby elect to have a ground floor apartment. It's considered dangerous. And poor Mary appeared to be in a bit of danger from her less than stable ex. (Who if they were in the good ole state of Florida that stand your ground law might have come in handy). And not only that who opens the door and peaks out never mind going out into the darkness of night when you asks "Is that you John?" And nobody answers?
I could go on and on but I won't. I had to stop watching at about 55 minutes. Couldn't bare the nonsense any further. Love time travel, quantum physics and sci-fi. But this just was not a very good film. At least not for me.
American Beauty (1999)
Hypnotic and Positive
My friend and I sat out in the car and cried tonight after this film. He told me that his head hurt after trying to compose himself from bursting into tears inside of the theater. But in the car he lost it. And his emotion and honesty about the affects of the film on his psyche broke me down and made me cry too.
As an artist it is what one aspires to achieve. A view of life that is as complicated as it is complex. And as an audience member it is a movie that you are not disappointed to have spent your money for BUT most of all your time sitting through.
It will move you in all directions of who you are, lives up to its hype and promises not to disappoint. Take time out of your life and go and ENJOY.
