The Stand (2020)
The Fear was Missing
The Stand is my all-time favorite book. I know that most movies are never as good as the book, so maybe it's just not possible to make a good movie version of this novel. I agree with the other reviewers about the terrible chronological order of the story; The Stand is a journey, not a series of time jumps. By doing this, the makers glossed over the absolute chaos caused by the virus and only really touched on some of it in Larry Underwood's arc. With the virus ravaging the world, it would have been nice to see more side stories of death, destruction, and lawlessness caused by it. And they left out the Holland Tunnel scene! How can you make The Stand and leave out the best part of the book?
What's also missing is the fear. This is one of the scariest books I have ever read. I felt none of that fear in this remake.
It's not all bad though, episode 7 was the best in my opinion. Although he's barely in it, the Trashcan man was spot on and Flagg was a bit scarier in this episode. The characters of Stu, Tom & Glen were portrayed pretty well, although with only 9 episodes the story is too compacted. I just wish one day someone would make the masterpiece that this deserves to be. A very generous 5.5.
Hereditary (2018)
For Horror Film Connoisseurs
I find it surprising that this film gets so many low marks. The only reason I can possibly fathom is that it's not filled with endless jump scares, standard cliche'd horror movie storylines and/or one-by-one character deaths at the hands of a standard boogeyman. If you like your horror a little deeper then read on.
What you get is a fleshed-out story of a deceased grandmother who has influenced her mentally ill family members is the worst way possible. You will not be able to predict where it goes and the surprises in the film come fast and furious. To keep it short and sweet, I'm a fan of recent horror films like Annihilation, Mother!, It Follows, and Beyond the Black Rainbow as well as TV surreal/horror like Twin Peaks and Penny Dreadful. If these films are more your style then check out Hereditary. I was completely blown away and can't stop thinking about it.
Wild at Heart (1990)
AMAZING!
I love this film. This film was my first introduction to a David Lynch film. It is definately not those who are bound by conventional movie making. This film does not poke fun at white trash, but rather concerns two free spirited individuals who are pursued by the darker elements of life, i.e. unbalanced family members, crime syndicates, and just plain weirdness! This movie is a collage of great scenes pieced together by references to the Wizard of Oz. Fun, fun, fun!
