Mystery Men (1999)
Dire. Avoid at all costs.
What a waste of a great cast, and plot that could have been very funny. I'd give it a minus rating if I could. It's the first time I've walked out of a film, I couldn't face another hour. It didn't even look as if the cast were enjoying themselves, which can make a poor film bearable.
Anna and the King (1999)
A wonderful experience.
This is one of the beautiful movies I've seen this year - the cinematography, the acting, the chemistry between the leads, the soundtrack were all brilliant. I completely forgot all the other versions of the story I've seen. It set it in its historical context, and addressed the whole question of modernisation, cultural assimilation and imperialism as the earlier films and musical failed to do. However, I would say that it's not a film for taking younger children to, and don't go to a showing at which kids are likely to be. At 2 1/2 hours it is long, and quite a lot of it is subtitled. My visit was spoiled by misbehaving, bored children who didn't appreciate all its finest points.
