The Riches (2007)
Accents
I finally got around to watching the pilot last night and was so impressed. So far, so damned good.
I do have to take slight issue with those reviews that bag on Driver and Izzard's "accents". For one, although Irish Travellers live in the Deep South, they have their own language, accent, and (sometimes) melodic way of speaking. I think the leads did a wonderful job at oscillating among a variety of accents in order to fit in contextually no matter where they were. I saw the accent-shifting as another example at how flexible they are and how they try to adapt to every situation they find themselves in.
I really look forward to future episodes.
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Pretty amazing
I'm the first to admit that Moore's films can be rather heavy-handed and didactic, but _Fahrenheit 9/11_ is amazing in that he actually steps back and doesn't indulge himself with being so overly jokey and *wink wink nudge nudge* about the subject matter.
I think this was a wise decision because the film stands up on its own. I know there are a lot of conservatives who won't see this film solely because they think they know what it's all about. They would be quite surprised were they to actually take a chance and see it. Even liberal people who might automatically determine they like the film before seeing one frame will be surprised at how intelligent and well-researched this documentary is. Everybody can get something out of this.
I implore anybody with an open mind to watch this film whether it strengthens your preexisting opinions or gives you insight into something not many people in this country understand. So many people in this day and age get their news mainlined directly from their cable box to their brains and are unfortunately too lazy to look for additional facts on their own. (Admittedly, the our country's current negative climate contributes to this.)
For those who have had issues with _Roger and Me_ or _Bowling for Columbine_, you'll be pleased to know the events as they are presented aren't taken out of context to make a point. Merely providing the viewer with various facts that the average American is completely clueless about (including myself!) makes this a powerful film that is already getting people talking.
And that's what America is all about. This polarizing attitude that is so prevalent in our great nation is really rather pathetic and I hope this film helps to make people understand that they can't possibly know everything and to shut up and listen to others with differing opinions every great once in awhile.
