Shot in the Face (2001)
Worth a look
This little Canadian film comes complete with odd characters and situations. It's the story of a man who's inherited a hundred grand from an uncle who had only one wish, that his nephew not waste his life like he did. But the problem is that since he has received the money, he hasn't been compelled to do anything.
So, on the first anniversary of his uncle's death he decides to do something but he can't quite figure what. He meets this girl with a loose screw and gets mixed up with a rubber and some insulting neighbors who pretend to act crazy for insurance fraud. Sounds wacky? It is but the movie makes us care for those characters and their lives. If you don't mind movies that are more that your usual Hollywood fare, you should enjoy this movie.
¿Quién puede matar a un niño? (1976)
Interesting moral dilemma.
I saw this movie when I was about 10 years old. I remember that it was pretty disturbing. I got the chance to see it again last night (18 years later) and I was not disappointed. In my memory, I thought we saw more of the children and less of the adults. But this time around I got to appreciate the director's effort in making us discover and feel what the adults could be thinking/feeling when confronted with such a sordid concept such as children killers. Other users have complained that the story is too slow, but I think it is meant as a device to put us in a vicarious state with the adult tourists. I would recommend this film to anyone bored with today's mainstream horror flicks.
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Not just another sappy romantic movie!
Message in a bottle is the type of movie that you expect will take an easy turn and become just like any other Hollywood romance. But instead, MIAB turn out to be a movie with real characters and real emotions. It is well reflected by the acting and directing.
