Carnival Row (2019)
Game of Thrones meets Bright
Not bad for such an ambitious project. Does a better job of world building than Bright, and keeps the politics simpler than Game of Thrones. It can be a little tricky to follow all the characters, but I appreciated the fact that the producers didn't try to drag this out to 10 or more episodes (like some other studios do). Acting and accents wavered a bit, but overall, it was enjoyable.
Transatlantic Coffee (2012)
A great film with amazing performances by the leads
It's a shame that most people will not be able to enjoy this gem in a theater, but the DVD is still well worth the price (especially since you'll want to watch the film a couple of times). The performances by the two leads (Kevin Pinassi and Rachel Marie Lewis) were superb, and the visuals and soundtrack add another layer of depth to a great film.
The story centers around a sad man's search to recapture happiness through his friendship with a young woman. It's a pretty dark tale, which is why it's well suited for a theater, but pick a rainy day or quiet evening and watch this film with someone else because you'll want to talk about it immediately.
Psych: Lights, Camera... Homicidio (2008)
Mui Bueno!
While the entire series is quite enjoyable, this particular episode of 'Psych' is especially funny, clever, and entertaining. Using the murder of a star on a hit Spanish soap opera as the main story, the episode mixes multiple comedic elements: bad acting, high school Spanish, over-the-top soap opera clichés, and colorful characters.
The episode felt very much like a play, in much the same way that "Soap Dish" was done. If you buy episodes (for example, from Apple iTunes or Amazon Unbox), then this is definitely a keeper.
I even loved how they cross-promoted the episode on the sister network to USA, Telemundo. That, in itself, is hilarious.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Worst Ending Ever!
A beautifully haunting and visually stimulating film is ruined by one of Speilberg's "happy endings." This is not "E.T." I was expecting a gritty and ambiguous ending, similar to classic science fiction authors Asimov and Dick. Instead, we get a movie that is 30 minutes too long.
Fight Club (1999)
Great story with a twist of lime
I missed this in the theaters because I thought it was just another vehicle for showing Brad Pitt's chest, but bored in my hotel room one night, I felt like watching a violent movie (New York does that to you).
First of all, the movie has that modern style that's typical of Fincher. If you were raised on a steady diet of MTV and cable TV, you'll love the dark images and wild editing. I'm buying the DVD just to watch it all over again, it looks that good.
But the story is what got me. The plot twist towards the end woke me up and had me freaked out. Not as good as some others, but it made the movie a "10" in my opinion, whereas it was headed for a decent "7."

Whatever Happened to Mason Reese (1990)
Waste of time
I can't believe I wasted 10 minutes of my time watching this cheap student film. After buying "Rush Hour" on DVD, I went through all the bonus materials until I came across this self-gratifying trash.
I wish I had those 10 minutes back--I would have organized my sock drawer and been a happier man.
The Matrix (1999)
Incredible special effects, very enjoyable!
This was the most enjoyable movie I've seen this year. The previews and trailers and commercials don't do justice to the quality of the special effects. I highly recommend watching this movie with a full theater--the audience reactions and cheering make it all the more exciting.
It's been awhile since I wanted to clap during a movie, but "The Matrix" had me laughing and my heart pounding. There are several major action sequences which make it worth the ticket price.
And I didn't even notice that Keanu Reeves was in the movie--he did a great job as the unwilling hero.
A Little Princess (1995)
An incredible film with great acting
I was flipping through some channels one night when I came across this film. I was immediately impressed by the look and feel of the film, but what made me continue watching was the acting--not one weak area. I've never seen a film with so many young actors come across so well.
The story is reminiscent of a Hans Christian Anderson fable, and I spent the entire second half of the movie looking for some sort of closure and resolution.
One of my best indicators for how much I think of a film is whether or not I decide to actually buy a copy. Even then, I'll usually make the added investment to purchase a DVD of those films I truly enjoyed. This is a definitely worth a DVD.
Zero Effect (1998)
Most entertaining film of 1998
I rented this movie after passing it over several times in the video store. I like Bill Pullman, and I've felt sorry for Ben Stiller ever since his doomed TV show. But it just wasn't enough to make me want to rent the video.
And although I hate to admit it, Siskel and Ebert gave this film a great promo during their "Memo to the Academy," and that made me want to give it a shot.
The screenplay was intelligent, and I especially liked the Sherlock Holmes references with a modern day twist. In fact, I liked the film so much, that I went out and bought the DVD the next day.
And even though it isn't saying much, I thought that 'Zero Effect' was the most enjoyable film of 1998, which was a year of terrible disappointment and big budget eye-candy. Regardless, this film would hold its own in any year.
Suicide Kings (1997)
Definitely worth the rental
I didn't expect much from this film, although I do like Christopher Walken and his..."distinctive" style of acting. I half-hoped for Jay Mohr to whip out his Christopher Walken impression, seeing as how he is probably the best at it.
A great, dark film with comedic elements, 'Suicide Kings' was universally appreciated (among my friends) up until the last 10 minutes. By an odd coincidence, the DVD version has alternate endings, which may satisfy those who didn't like the final ending. The director's commentary on the DVD is also worth listening to for a few minutes.
Deep Rising (1998)
Not worth your time or money
This was one of the worst horror films I have ever seen. The creatures were unbelievable and had no character, the crew was predictable and poorly acted, and the music was the worst to which I have ever been subjected.
Just about the only (slightly) redeeming factor were the computer graphics and special effects, which were adequate.
