Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
More to see than what's in the trailers (but not much more)
This movie was actually pretty funny. I mean I knew the premise, I knew a lot of the funny lines and parts, so I was expecting to actually have a let down when I saw the movie. But, I was surprised. The movie held my attention most of the time. It felt a little long towards the end. Ashton Kutcher does a good job, and Seann Scott continues plays another one of his stupid college-aged roles. Talk about getting type cast. Oh well. I was wondering how they would wrap up the movie and it has an interesting twist at the end.
The Wisdom of Crocodiles (1998)
Interview with Jude Law?
If you get past the first 15 minutes you might wish you hadn't. I didn't quite get what was happening. It's a vampire story, but I was continually thinking werewolf. I kept expecting Jude Law to grow claws or sprout hair. The first (and thankfully the only one shown on screen) killing sequence is quite gory and almost made me want to leave. I stuck it out and wasn't really rewarded. Jude Law does a fine job, as do the detectives, but I just couldn't figure out where the movie wanted to go. It had a surreal feel to it, a la "A Clockwork Orange" that made his killing somehow feel acceptable. But in the end, the movie just didn't add up. I can't really recommend it.
The Mod Squad (1999)
Too hip for it's own good
I really wanted to like this movie, but I just couldn't. It had the potential to be a really cool, hip remake of a cool show, but that's where it fell apart. It was too hip, too cool. First of all, all the cool lines and scenes were showcased in the preview trailers, which I'd seen lots of times. And the editing was very disjointed, so that the scenes didn't seem to flow together and they all seemed out of place. Claire Danes, who I love as an actress failed to make this her break through to the beyond high school acting roles. The only bright spot was Giovanni Ribisi as Pete. His slightly stupid, yet actually smart style was funny and refreshing. Overall though, I'd recommend just watching the previews instead of seeing the movie and wishing it was more.
200 Cigarettes (1999)
Great cast, lousy movie
As is often typical of a movie filled with a laundry list of talented actors, this movie failed to deliver. Most of the good young actors were wasted or given lame roles. Notably Christina Ricci and Janeane Garofalo. Ricci can be a pretty good actress but in this movie her character was wooden and stiff. Garofalo had only about 3 minutes of screen time; makes you wonder why she even took the part. Exception to the good acting was Courtney Love. She's good in The People vs. Larry Flint, but as a woman looking for true love; that's a stretch.
Rushmore (1998)
Excellent quirky film
This movie is hilarious. Bill Murray does a fantastic job as a loser. He just doesn't care, and it's really funny. Jason Schwartzman does a spectacular job also as a kid who doesn't know how old to be. The movie is really funky, with all sorts of non-dialogue moments that had me rolling. A very funny movie!
