The Chevy Chase Show (1993)
Unintentionally hilarious
This notoriously short-lived talk show definitely falls into the "so-bad-it's-good" category. The premiere episode featured a Goldie Hawn interview and musical number that will go down in cringe-inducing television history. Trust me; in ten more years, THE CHEVY CHASE SHOW will be a sought-after cult item for lovers of shlock (the same folks who shell out big bucks to snicker at old Dean Martin roasts). Some enterprising video company should jump on the bandwagon!
Modern Problems (1981)
Oh, God, not again!
MODERN PROBLEMS is one of those films that is ALWAYS on cable -- and yet no one would ever want to watch in its entirety. Blame Comedy Central. Probably Chevy Chase at his lowest. Although his career has had so many low points, it's hard to say. He must be a masochist who deliberately chooses godawful movies to destroy his career. Or he's a sadist who enjoys inflicting these turkeys on the rest of us. Don't listen to anyone who claims, "Actually, it's not that bad;" they didn't actually sit through it.
Buio Omega (1979)
Nauseating!
I saw this as BURIED ALIVE, and it features one of the most disgusting scenes ever -- without a drop of blood. An old woman is eating a barfy-looking beef stew, and the stuff keeps dribbling out of her mouth and down her chin. The main character, witnessing the scene, immediately vomits... and so did I! I guess that's like a standing ovation for Joe D'Amato.
Out of Sight (1998)
Cheadle and Clooney and Lopez -- oh, my
Probably my favorite movie of the year (so far). Sure, there may be more style than substance, but there's also genuine heat between Clooney and Lopez and a tight script beneath the style. And what style! Every scene is an explosion of over-saturated primary colors. The soundtrack is funky and moody. And Don Cheadle is fantastic -- a funny, menacing loose cannon. Along with the underrated JACKIE BROWN, the best Leonard adaptation yet.
Sin in the Suburbs (1964)
Sleazy fun!
Sleazy, cheesy fun from the sexually-repressed early 1960s. Complete with jazzy soundtrack, freeze-frames, fervent coupling in kitschy bedrooms and silly costumes for the not-so-shocking "shock" ending. Stands out among the pioneering "adult" films.
