The Other Gods (2006)
Atmospheric and visually inventive short
The Other Gods is a brief but unique short with a simple HP Lovecraft-inspired story. A magician's arcane studies lead him to come face to face with various monsters of Lovecraftian lore.
The black and white cutout animation is very similar to that of The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), although presumably this was made on a computer. A title card claims that the film is from the twenties but it clearly is not, as the copyright notice says otherwise. The tame deception isn't necessary as the antiquated style suits the film perfectly whether it was made in 1924 or 2004.
A creepy little success, I found it atmospheric, entertaining, and the perfect length - unlike many shorts it understays its welcome. See it if you get the chance.
Happy Here and Now (2002)
Effective off-beat film lingers in the mind
Mysterious, elliptical film that at first I didn't know what to make of, but I found it really lingered in the mind afterwards and was ultimately one of the most memorable films I saw at the 2002 Toronto International film festival; a really unique play between the real and the imiation of the real and the blurring between them. Funny, strange, affecting; I didn't understand all of it, but I liked it.
