Steel (1997)
Romantic Comedy of the year!
29 October 1999
Steel is an awesome movie, a cinematic masterpiece. I have not had as good a time in the theater since I saw Steel. Steel's action is big, but the laughs are even bigger. It is one of the funnier movies I can think of. Shaquille is perfect as the super hero Steel. Every time he is in that ridiculous suit, with his goofy smile, I just have to burst out laughing. The plot is good too, and the action sequences are well choreographed. But the most important part of this movie is the many, many laughs. Richard Roundtree has some great jokes ("I especially like the shaft"). Annabeth Gish is hilarious as Sparky, especially at the end with her wheelchair that rises so she can stand ("You havent seen the best part"). Some guy gets killed because of a discrepency over the meat type in his hot dog. A pin is pulled from a grenade and 27 seconds later it blows up, after Shaq jokes about not being able to make free throws. Why the bad rap on Steel? I have no idea, maybe the angry comic book fans have no sense of humor. This film deserves a lot more credit, and Shaquille O'Neal needs to be back for a Steel 2.

Ronin (1998)
10/10
Ronin rules. Gets better and better the more times you watch it.
28 October 1999
When I first saw this movie in theaters I was confused but I still enjoyed the action sequences and of course De Niro. However, when I got word my buddy Gwynn got it on DVD, I had to watch it again. This movie is brilliant. I've made a habit of trying to watch it every week. Every time I watch it I get something more out of it. Very slick production with a top rate cast. De Niro is the greatest actor of the 20th century and is perfect in this movie. Watch for 3 James Bond villains in the movie.

Kingpin (1996)
10/10
Harrelson and Murray are fantastic in this truly great film. Best Farrelly brothers movie.
28 October 1999
This is the best Farrelly brothers film. It is extremely funny but also has a great plot, unlike There's Something About Mary, which was not very funny anyway. Woody Harrelson is perfect as the down and out bowler Roy Munson. His nemesis is Ernie McCracken, or Big Ern, played by Bill Murray in one of his funniest performances to date. A tremendous film with tremendous laughs.

Tremors (1990)
Great fun. A high point in the career of Kevin Bacon.
28 October 1999
Tremors is a great movie. Without a doubt, Kevin Bacon's finest performance. The duo of Burt Ward and Kevin Bacon makes for some big laughs. The film is very funny and energetic. Tremors is well made and overall very entertaining. Followed by Tremors 2: Aftershocks, which was good, but lacked the brilliance of the original.

A magnificent look at war and its tragic effects.
27 October 1999
The Deer Hunter is the most sad, and emotionally draining film I have ever seen. It is the greatest anti-war statement in film history. Robert De Niro particularly, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, and John Savage provide just terrific performances. The film demonstrates the devastating effects of the Vietnam War on a small Pennsylvania town. Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Apocalypse Now are also great Vietnam movies, but none are as tragic or as powerful as the Deer Hunter. The best war movie ever made.

Best Bond, best Bond girl, best henchman, best car, best music Best Bond film
27 October 1999
My favorite James Bond movie is without a doubt The Spy Who Loved Me.

Roger Moore is at his all time best in this film . The Russian Agent XXX, Major Anya Amasova (Barbara Bach) is the best Bond girl in the series also. She is extremely capable, even outsmarting Bond at times, and absolutely gorgeous. Curt Jergens is effective as Karl Stromberg, a shipping billionaire bent on destroying the world. Scene after scene is just amazing. The opening ski chase and cliff jump, the hilarious meeting with Hossein in Egypt ("When one is in Egypt, one should delve deeply into its treasures), pyramids, Mojaba Club, Temple with Jaws, Bond and Anya on the boat, train fight with Jaws, meeting with Stromberg at Atlantis, above and below water car chase, Anya threatens Bond, shootout at Liparus, Atlantis confrontation, and the closing in the escape pod ("keeping the British end up sir"). All to the best score in a James Bond movie as well. Simply the best James Bond movie ever made.
