Eight For Silver, Netflix, from Easter Monday
If the news that Leigh Whannell's Wolfman has been delayed until 2025 has left you howling, then this werewolf twist on the myth should help. Released in cinemas under the much more boring title The Cursed, Sean Ellis' atmospheric period horror is thankfully back under its old moniker for its Netflix release. A silver bullet extracted from a dead man near the start of the film, clues us into the territory we're entering as the film moves back in time to his childhood in rural France. When his heartless father massacres a Romany settlement, the children start to have nightmares... and then begin to disappear. As pathologist John McBride (Boyd Holbrook) suspects something supernatural is at work, Ellis plays around with the werewolf myth that draws on the idea of a beast consuming you from within.

Debunking fun and exciting rumors is a dirty job sometimes, but someone has to do it. It stands to reason that a movie like "The Batman: Part II" would attract plenty of attention and interest, given the accolades that rolled in immediately following star Robert Pattinson's highly-anticipated introduction as the grungiest and most emo version of Bruce Wayne/Batman we've seen on the big screen yet. Director Matt Reeves didn't just helm another successful reboot for the most popular DC superhero while putting his own unique spin on it, but he did so by assembling a cast full of our greatest actors around. With stars like Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and even Paul Dano surrounding Pattinson, it's no surprise that fans would look forward to what other talent might be coming on board for the sequel.

Horror is iterative, but it just as regularly moves through the same cycles decade after decade, ostensibly breaking new ground, when in reality, the genre is simply doing what is has always done. Today's horror landscape, for as remarkable and diverse as it is, is principally a landscape of legacy sequels. The horror of yesterday is new again, and commonly, old faces and names are dredged up to headline the latest nostalgic bloodbath. Reasonably, the present iteration could be decried as Hollywood's lack of originality, though seasoned horror veterans have seen this cycle before.
The early aughts were replete with imported horrors. Hollywood studios regularly borrowed transnational scares, repackaged them, and presented them as the next big thing. They were successful, too. Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of Hideo Nakata's "Ring," grossed nearly $250 million when released in 2002. Hollywood studios also remade the likes of "A Tale of Two Sisters,...

World premieres of Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See, Amazon’s Expats starring Nicole Kidman, and Euphoria creator Ron Leshem’s Hebrew-language drama Bad Boy were unveiled as part of the Toronto Film Festival’s Primetime program on Monday.

And The Farewell director Lulu Wang is returning to Toronto with Amazon’s Expats, with Kidman and Sarayu Blue in a drama about a group of close-knit women expatriates in Hong Kong. 1995 – it was the best of times; it was the worst of times. While the peak era of action movies was beginning to wane, multiplexes were still packed with decent action films, and icons like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone were still packing them in. Meanwhile, second-tier action heroes like Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme still tried to punch their way onto the A-list. It would never quite happen for those two, with both starring in direct-to-video movies by the decade’s end. But 1995 was arguably the last year in the nineties when Stallone and Schwarzenegger were at the top of their game. Schwarzenegger’s career would only really falter at the end of the decade, with him never really able to recapture his former box office glory following his run as the Governor of California. Stallone would be luckier, with him able to reinvent himself in the mid-2000s...

The long-foretold end of Peak TV may be upon us, as studios and streamers — adjusting to a new world of inflation, higher interest rates, and a slowdown in stock prices and subscriber figures — slash costs and reevaluate strategy. The result, whether at Warner Bros. Discovery (which has already taken $3.5 billion in content write-downs and canceled several planned or in-production series) or at the BBC (which needs to chop more than $120 million from its originals budget if it is to meet savings targets) will mean less money for producers and, one assumes, fewer shows getting commissioned.
Nonscripted content, which is cheaper and easier to ramp up to fill programming slots, will be the most obvious beneficiary of this belt-tightening, with much of the focus of the upcoming MIPTV market on less glamorous but typically more profitable reality TV, “shiny floor” entertainment (à la The Voice) and game shows.

Stars: Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, Alistair Petrie, Roxane Duran, Nigel Betts, Simon Kunz, Stuart Bowman, Amelia Crouch, Max Mackintosh, Tommy Rodger, Mine Rose Daly, Millie Kiss | Written and Directed by Sean Ellis
Eight for Silver is a horror movie that was originally released in 2021 under the title The Cursed. Directed by Sean Ellis, it stars Boyd Holbrook, Kelly Reilly, and Alistair Petrie and takes place in the late 19th century, centring around a small village in France where a series of brutal murders have taken place. The locals are convinced that a pack of wolves is responsible for the killings, but a British pathologist, John McBride (Holbrook), arrives to investigate and discovers that something far more sinister is at play.
One of the strengths of Eight for Silver is its visual style. The movie is shot in a dark, atmospheric manner that perfectly captures the eerie and foreboding mood of the story.

We usually share the official "reminder" list for Academy voters but it's been so busy we forgot. Apologies. If you'd like to look it up it's here. 301 films are eligible for Best Picture this year. This list is a handy guide each year to clear up any doubts that remain about what actually got released in theaters, and in which calendar year. All of this becomes harder and harder to track each year with theatrical releases barely advertised and in theaters for increasingly short durations.
The biggest area of curiousity for us, is seeing which of the annual submissions for Best International Feature Film are eligible outside of that race and which were released but didn't submit for general eligibility...

This year has been frightfully good for horror. As the box office recovers, 2022 continued to make it clear that the thing audiences are guaranteed to show up for, outside of Marvel movies, is horror movies. Some of the year’s biggest success stories, hottest new directors, and studio overhauls emerged from the horror business. From revitalized franchises (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream and Hellraiser), originals (Men, Deadstream and The Menu), adaptations (The Black Phone, Bones and All) new takes on classic monsters (The Cursed, The Invitation) contemporary culture commentaries from more emerging voices in the genre (Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Nanny, Umma and Watcher) and star-led vehicles like Beast and Day Shift, there was truly something for every horror fan. And even Marvel got in the game with Werewolf by Night.

Do you know what's the only quest tougher than Frodo traveling all that way to cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom? Attempting to one-up the wildly successful first season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." After introducing us to a brand-new batch of characters and getting all the necessary table-setting out of the way, season 2 appears set to pick up where the finale left off and run with it. The first step to realizing that ambition, of course, means adding even more major players to the ensemble. Less than a week after the first batch of new names were announced to join the sophomore effort of this epic fantasy streaming series, yet another group of actors have joined the cast in what's being described as recurring roles.

Every year, there are always a few critically acclaimed gems that don't get quite enough traction to make an impression among the tentpole summer blockbusters, whether it be through a lackluster marketing campaign or the big dogs pushing it out. One of this summer's most pleasant surprises is "Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris," a thoroughly delightful adaptation of Paul Gallico's 1958 novel about a London maid who travels to the city of lights to fulfill her dream of owning a Dior couture dress of her own.
I've never read the book upon which the film is based on, but director Anthony Fabian ("Good Hope") imbues the kind-hearted fairy tale with an exuberant amount of charm. It has the beating heart of a storybook, bolstered by a charismatic central performance from Lesley Manville.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Aftershock (Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt)
A work of deep pain and fervent justice, Tonya Lewis Lee and Paula Eiselt’s Sundance winner Aftershock examines the failings of maternal health support particularly as it relates to Black mothers. Centering on two NYC families forever torn apart after maternal deaths due to childbirth-related complications, the film takes an intimate look at the widowers and family left behind as they pick up the pieces to fight for change in a prejudiced system. Amongst its most interesting passages, the filmmakers also go back decades and beyond, filling in the historical foundation for how we ended up with our current, faltering maternal health system and setting the stage for how it can be changed.

Universal rules this week. “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “The Black Phone” (both 19.99) are first and second respectively on three current VOD Top 10 charts. They also have 10 of 30 total slots (including “The Northman”/5.99 from Focus). And they accomplished this with minimal damage to their new releases’ box office take for the weekend.
They also defied what might have been a logical instinct to separate their releases so as not to compete with each other. Studios, even when there were far more theatrical releases than currently, virtually never would debut new wide titles the same week.
Per standard Universal policy, “Jurassic World,” with an opening weekend of over 50 million, got home availability after its fifth weekend. “Black Phone,” though a strong performer with 72 million, was released after its third, like most Universal titles. In its third week at #1, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/19.99) leads VOD charts at iTunes and Google Play (by transactions) and Vudu (by revenue). In more than 18 months of charting VOD play, it ties “Free Guy” (Disney) and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” as the only titles to achieve triple-week dominance.
It’s likely to continue. Just as Sony’s MCU smash fended off all challengers for several weeks in theaters, expect the same here.
The hunger for new films is evidenced by “Moonfall” (Lionsgate/19.99) taking the #2 and #3 slots on all charts. The early February Roland Emmerich-directed release, which the company acquired for U.S. rights for a small portion of its reported 150 million production budget, bombed in domestic theaters with only 19 million in grosses. Still, audiences were curious enough to pay the 19.99 initial PVOD price long after it left theaters.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) scored a second of what will be likely many weeks atop VOD charts. That comes after the film reached $800 million in domestic box office and it’s about to enter its fifth month in theaters.
Little else changed this week, with fewer films than usual finding positions on all three iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu charts. “Sing 2” (Universal/$19.99), high on all charts again, has spent more than three months at a $19.99 or higher. Like “Spider-Man,” it still ranked in the top 10 this weekend.
“Dog” (United Artists/$19.99), a much more recent release and #7 in theaters, was the third across-the-board placer. The only new entry of note was “Panama” (Saban/$6.99), an action thriller about an arms dealer in the country during the invasion. It costars Mel Gibson, with Mark Neveldine directing. It placed on two charts.
Four Best Picture nominees showed up on at least one chart.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony/$19.99) debuted on home platforms nearly 13 weeks after its release in theaters. That’s a long time, by any standard — pre-Covid, 70-75 days was typical for even the biggest films — and is a testament to Sony’s emphasis on theatrical play as the sole major studio to not have its own streamer. Although other studios thrive with PVOD play to some degree, Sony may benefit the most.
As “No Way Home” nears the $800 million mark, it would be shocking if the Marvel movie didn’t debut at #1 on PVOD across the board. It’s likely to remain there for a long time, in part because “Uncharted” won’t appear for a while. The PVOD future for “The Batman” is uncertain, although the Warner Bros. title is expected to land on HBO Max April 19.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Arrebato (Iván Zulueta)
That Arrebato has waited more than 40 years to receive a bona fide U.S. theatrical run is wild; it lives up to the cult-classic status it’s held since 1979. (The marketing push highlights it being Pedro Almodóvar’s favorite horror film.) Its parts recall many later works as diverse as Trainspotting and The Ring, its depiction of addiction and stasis leading us towards a legitimately brilliant ending that brings the whole thing into meta territory with its film-within-a-film coaxing us to enter the fray ourselves. Our need for answers ratchets up to a potent boiling point, as is surely Zulueta’s intent. He’s not interested in the release, just the rapture. He wants us to chase the high...

Two films debuted in the box-office weekend top ten, but the Tom Holland-led Uncharted held onto the number one spot by besting the second-place film by $13.2 million.
Again, finishing atop the box-office weekend, Uncharted pulled in $23.3 million in its second week of release. This gives the film a total of $83.4 million to show for its first two weeks in theaters. Also holding steady in its spot from last weekend was Dog starring Channing Tatum. The film added $10.1 million to boost its two-week total to $30.9 million. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: No Way Home clung onto third place with $5.8 million over the weekend. This boosted the film’s grand total to $779.9 million over the last eleven weeks. The film now inches closer to the second highest grossing domestic film of all time, Avengers: Endgame ($858.4 million). Death on the Nile held its ground in fourth place with $4.5 million, lifting its three-week total to $32.8 million.

Yet again, three new films shake up the box-office weekend top ten as the new action/adventure feature starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, Uncharted, easily took first place with an impressive $44.2 million opening weekend.
Finishing $29.1 million ahead of the film in second place, Uncharted led what may have been the strongest weekend showing at the box office in quite some time. The new Channing Tatum film Dog debuted over the weekend in second place with $15.1 million. Climbing one spot to third place was Spider-Man: No Way Home adding $7.7 million to lift the film’s ten-week tally to $770.6 million as it officially passed Avatar to become the third highest grossing domestic film of all time. Falling from first to fourth was Death on the Nile which added $6.3 million over the weekend to boost its two-week tally to $25 million. Jackass Forever finished in fifth place, falling from second last week, with $5.2 million.

It’s official: the winter belongs to Tom Holland, the rest of us are just living in it. A mere ten weeks after the blockbuster launch of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the 25-year-old British actor (or should we now say “star”?) returned to the top of the box-office chart with his second out-of-the-gate smash of the season—the Indiana Jones-esque videogame adaptation Uncharted, which debuted over President’s Day weekend to a projected $51 million after Monday is factored in. Meanwhile, just a notch below in second place, Channing Tatum’s feel-good man-and-his-best-friend road movie, Dog, sunk its canines into an $18 million opening holiday frame while the less-cuddly four-legged flick, The Cursed, barely managed to nose its way into the top ten with a $1.9 million bow.

“The Batman” will open in two weeks to $150 million or more, but this weekend may be even more important to box-office recovery: “Uncharted” (Sony) and “Dog” (United Artists) both opened to over $15 million. For the last two years, there have been just six weekends in which two new releases grossed even $10 million. What makes this even more extraordinary is both are original, non-franchise titles.
Studios and producers need signs that the public can respond to standalone titles that show some degree of originality. That is what happened here and it’s a big deal.
“Uncharted,” based on a well-known video game and starring Tom Holland, while his most recent “Spider-Man” is still #3, will gross and estimated $44 million for the three-day weekend; $51 million, with Presidents Day added. That’s as much as 50 percent above conservative estimates and a third better than the more realistic ones.

A mysterious, bloodthirsty creature (or several) haunts a European village, stirring up a wave of panic as townspeople are picked off one by one and leading to the widespread assumption that they must be cursed. That's not just the general premise behind director Sean Ellis' latest horror film, "The Cursed," releasing in theaters today, it's also the loose inspiration behind the film, rooted in real-world history in 1760s France and a prime example of folklore that taps into the sort of primal fears which attracted actor Boyd Holbrook to "The Cursed" in the first place.

The Cursed, directed by Sean Ellis, is now in theaters and we've have an exclusive clip just for Daily Dead readers! Set in a remote village in the 1800s, this reimagining of the werewolf legend finds villagers under attack by an unknown force:
"In the late 1800s, a once-peaceful remote country village is under attack—but by who or what, no one knows. Villagers spread rumors of a cursed land, supernatural forces, and even demonic creatures, as the disappearances and killings continue. Pathologist John McBride arrives to investigate the danger, only to discover something much deeper and more sinister than he ever could have imagined."
Formerly titled Eight for Silver, the film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival and Sean Ellis recently commented on a number of changes recently made to the film:

Last year’s Sundance Film Festival brought period Gothic horror Eight for Silver from writer/director Sean Ellis. After their father, a cold-hearted land baron, ruthlessly slaughters a camp of Romani who staked a claim to his land, young Charlotte (Amelia Crouch) and Edward (Max Mackintosh) begin to have ominous dreams of a human scarecrow and silver teeth. The dreams draw them and other children from the nearby village to the site of the massacre, and soon after, Edward goes missing. The discovery of grisly remains attracts the attention of a grief-stricken pathologist (Boyd Holbrook), who suspects something supernatural is lurking in the surrounding forest and vows to hunt it down and destroy it.

On Monday, Spider-Man: No Way Home crawled its way past Avatar’s $760.5 million to become the third highest domestic grosser of all time. With that milestone reached, the baton is ready to be passed to Sony’s Uncharted, the long-awaited video game adaptation that also gives Tom Holland his biggest role yet outside of the MCU. The adventure film, which co-stars Mark Wahlberg, should spark things up at the box office after what has been a soft start to the year.

Werewolf stories frequently involve allegorical explorations of the duality of man: the clash between the "civilized" surface layer and the violent beast within. Instead, Ellis deploys the werewolf as a roaming specter hellbent on revenge -- and in this film,...
