If you like watching a woman be miserable for a couple of hours, this is the movie for you
MichaelByTheSea27 November 2022
We live in a society that rewards lying and cheating. But I really don't like most movies that are based on characters who lie and cheat to get ahead. Aside from the ethical questions, it's always really cringey when they get found out, and they always do get found out. At least the fake date movies involve characters who, arguably, don't hurt anybody other than family, and are ostensibly set up to prevent family criticism (or allow grandma to think everything is fine).

But here, somebody who told the truth didn't make it in the competition because Jen posted a fake video entry that got picked instead. Ironically, everything else that Jen says in her videos is usually quite "genuine" and it seemed possible that she could have made it to the final 20 and final 10 and maybe even the final 3 by being completely honest.

But having gone down the wrong path, with sales in her struggling business going up, Jen asks rhetorically:

"Why do I think this is going to spiral out of control to my detriment?"

Because it will.

And, for much of the movie, we are forced to watch Clare Bowen (effectively) make Emily look like the most miserable and emotionality distraught person on the planet. She constantly looks like she's seen a ghost or just watched her ice cream fall on to the sidewalk. I get it; she's really damaged by the loss of her dad when she was a child and by her resentment of a mom who looked for love elsewhere and wasn't there for her. And she's guilt ridden over the fake life she's living. But watching that nonstop pain, angst and anxiety is not the most enjoyable experience. Especially when stretched out over the better part of two hours.

I kept waiting and wishing that she would just let loose and enjoy Max who, inexplicably, has loved her for years. It's Hallmark, so everyone knows where they will end up, but in a good movie, as in life, the focus should be on the journey not the destination. Here, the journey was painful.

I did like watching Anna Van Hooft, who played Emily's sister and business partner Ali. I'd like to see her in more Hallmark movies and maybe even in a lead role.

I grade Hallmark on a curve, but I can see why I never saw any commercials or trailers for this movie.

Gets to the core of emotional baggage
MickyG3337 December 2022
6.8 stars.

First, this movie is somewhat entertaining, and dramatic. The musical score is great, the atmosphere is good, the acting is good. There is not much romance, but for me it was enjoyable, mainly because I could connect with the characters. There are a bunch of wounded people in this story. She gets caught up in a small lie that blows up into a whole charade of cover up after cover up. Will she end up sabotaging what remains of her dwindling success?

How many of us relate to this movie? Probably a lot of us. This movie is about family baggage, and the struggles and trials that accompany a dysfunctional relationship with a parent. Our protagonist female has nothing but leftover shadows from her past, and this story is about her personal conflicts to overcome the darkness and come into the light. In spite of her misfortunes as a child, due to problems with her mother, she managed to follow her dream. She is a creator of artistic beauty, and owns a store with her sister which showcases her talents. In contrast are all of the past issues that haunt her and are a barrier to her taking the next steps toward self-fulfillment. Everyone around her sees her potential, but she can't see past her insecurities. Waiting just beyond the horizon is the opportunity of a lifetime, and a chance at great love.

This movie is very effective at displaying a dramatized version of many hurting and injured individuals in the world today, and I hope that narcissistic parents can fathom the destructive impact they have on their children. Emotional abuse creates narcissists, and narcissists proliferate emotional abuse. Listen to Dr. Phil and let us end this tragic cycle.

Leads with actual personalities
vacatia17 December 2022
Usually I can't stand these types of Christmas movies, but this one actually has a decent script and two leads with...chemistry? Gasp. Not only that but they had personalities and showed realistic signs of human quirks. To top it all off, it wasn't a story about a rich person going back to a small town and learning to love to build snowmen or something, it actually had an interesting storyline. Maybe I'm a fan of home decor instagram, but I'm also a fan of the concept that home decor influencers can be full of hot patootie at times.

A+ transaction IMO.

OH and that baby better be a paid actor, because it tried to steal the scene a few times.

Just a little bit too forgettable
r96sk22 December 2022
I guess it merits praise for not being as bad as it could've been.

Given the obvious, I was not expecting '#Xmas' to pack any sort of punch - that title is an immediate red flag. Though, to be fair, it's actually an averagely fine festive flick for television. I will say that I did enjoy Clare Bowen in the lead role, nothing special granted but she's likeable.

Brant Daugherty leads the rest of the cast OK, Lillian Doucet-Roche and Sebastian Stewart are alright too - even if their supposedly split relationship was a tad too one-sided against Doucet-Roche's character in my opinion.

Overall, I think the film is just a little bit too forgettable - like, I don't dislike it but what really actually happens? Nothing memorable, unfortunately.

Not a good effort
bexx-6552729 November 2022
I love Hallmark movies. I watch ALL of them. This is one of the worst movies in their 2022 catalog because of the character of Jen and the actress who plays her. She is one of the most unlikable female leads and sadly one of the worst actresses. Jen does nothing except wallow in self pity and act like her life is terrible. She is so mean to her mother, and to Max, played by the charming Brant Doughtery. I literally liked every character in this movie except Jen and she is so one dimensional. Maybe it was the writing, maybe it was the actress, maybe both. By the end of the movie I cringed at every gesture and vocal inflection she made. I cannot recommend this one.

Better than expected

Warning: Spoilers
I have come to despise Hallmark. Their movies have become so family unfriendly. This one was an exception. There was nothing that I would have had to send children out of the room for. That being said, this was a cute holiday movie. The lead character was coerced into the deception instead of initiating it. That was different. Brant Daughtery was excellent. He came across as the caring friend/husband that any woman would want. Points taken away for the title. The spelling of Christmas as 'xmas' makes me cringe. Personal opinion. The fact that this was on Hallmark took another star. I have really come to detest Hallmark. But all in all it was a cute movie.

THE STORY IS GOOD, TERRIBLE ACTING BY LEAD ACTRESS
anushkalovell21 December 2022
While the entire story is not bad, Hallmark has a huge collection of christmas movies but many are so badly acted that you what a few minutes and then turn it off. This particular one - that actress went about as if she was under an electric shock. Terrible acting. Who is she? The guy I am familiar with and he was not bad. The actress who played her sister was far more likeable and jenu-ine and the character of a her mum was good but one bad actress can ruin it for all. Sometimes Hallmark movies are so over done it and this was one of them. It is a pity as the story was an interesting angle but I think they should have gone with another actress.

"What is fake and real, really?"
Jackbv12326 November 2022
How about calling it "theater"? So many Christmas movies have a "white lie". But Jen and her cohorts know that this is more deception than a white lie. False pretenses are necessary to enter the contest and their store needs the exposure, so it is OK, right?

Deception aside, this story is good. It has some fresh angles. It has energy, It has suspense. The situation keeps building. There is a twist that is heavily hinted. Clare Bowen and Brant Daugherty have great chemistry and good comedic timing. Karen Kruper slightly overplays the meddling mom, but it works. There are some great lines. I loved the conversation that comes in the bedroom the night after the gingerbread house video.

There is an interesting theme where the real Jen thinks she is the opposite of Jen T. She has real self-esteem issues. The trolls among her online followers really hurt her. She also has a strong aversion to marriage. This movie does an amazing job of developing this character, and this character is real. What is especially interesting is how her personality as Jen T shines a light on who the real Jen is.

The relationship between Jen and Max doesn't get as much screen time as many of these movies, but it makes great use of the time they have. I enjoyed watching this relationship as much as many I can think of.

To portray a character like Jen takes some good acting. Like the character, Bowen may not have been perfect, but she showed us a real person. I don't think Max's character had the layer of depth, but Daugherty was outstanding in this part.

I am amazed that I want to give what is basically a fake marriage movie 10 stars. But also I can't ignore what I said in the first paragraph. Of course, the truth comes out and has consequences, and the audience expected it. So 1 star deduction for real deception because I am a dinosaur who still believes honesty is a virtue and it has become to easy to blur the lines between fake and real.

Well, the other review seems unnecessarily uptight
whitetigerspace1 December 2022
The featured review is unnecessarily uptight and unforgiving, just like this rating app which keeps telling me I have too many or too few characters. The point of such plot lines is to demonstrate how any degree of deception can blow up in your face. I mean this is a Hallmark movie; it shouldn't be comfortable to watch for all kinds of reasons, not the least the general "C" quality of them.

There is supposed to be a moral somewhere, not a sleigh ride to goodie, goodie all the way.

Claire Bowen was charming in "Nashville," I am willing to give this film some breathing room.

Her costar is believable as a guy who had had to hold his heart in abeyance for years.

Brant Daughtery is a PLUS!
franksjolynn28 November 2022
We only started watching because of Brant Daughtery. Finally Hallmark gets a good leading guy for a holiday movie, but leaves him mostly in the background. Astoria and Portland Oregon are not places that have snow (Astoria has an average of less than 1/4 inch of snow a year.) The premise of the movie is untruths, is this the new standard for Hallmark? Lies upon lies and too many to keep track of. Definitely full of family drama with bad family dynamics. Not sure it makes the best Christmas movie, but better than most Hallmark has done this year overall. Hope they decide to do more films with Brant.

Clair Bowen was excellent
pedalforsanity4 December 2022
I really liked this movie. The cast was great with Clair Bowen, Brant Daugherty, Anna Van Hooft and Karen Kruger all superb in their performances.

Clair Bowen, for me anyway, stole the show. Loved her hair, loved her voice, her expressions, and her mannerisms. I was not familiar with her from any previous roles, but hope to see her again. She had great chemistry with Brant Daugherty. He always gives a stellar performance like his role earlier this year in A Royal Runaway Romance. I also always like Anna Van Hooft and she was solid here. The mother was played to perfection by Hallmark great Karen Kruger.

I thought the speeches near the end and the final scene were the perfect way to end the movie.

Some great films this season from Hallmark, please keep them coming.

Okay Hallmark romance
herrcarter-9216123 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Classic movie fans will immediately recognize the plot of this movie as a takeoff on Barbara Stanwyck's "Christmas in Connecticut". Oh well, most of Hallmark's plots are copied from some other movie, and this one is more original than most of their offerings.

The romance in this one was just okay. The chemistry between the leads wasn't great. I wish they'd had some good solid scenes that demonstrated growing attraction between the two of them, rather than the cheesy, forced kiss under the mistletoe. Brant Daugherty was much more convincing than Clare Bowen at acting like he was in love. They were both competent actors, and I've liked Brant in other movies I've seen him in, where, as in this case, he's typically risen above the mostly mediocre material given him.

I liked that this movie made lead character Jen more of a complex character. Despite being beautiful and talented, she was a woman full of insecurities and self doubt, and she clearly had issues from her childhood that made it difficult for her to love. At some point, though, it got a bit tedious, and you just wanted to slap her upside the head and tell her to get over herself. Yeah, her mom was a bit annoying, and had made some mistakes while Jen was a child, but the animosity and bitterness that Jen had toward her was just over the top. Likewise, her unwillingness to let down her guard and give into her feelings for Max, who was clearly her best friend. They just overdid the whole, "I feel so worthless, I had such a horrible childhood, I can't think about getting married" thing.

The whole premise of Jen creating a fake video and lying about a fake husband and baby was, of course, ridiculous. If I'd been the screenwriter, instead of intentionally lying, I would have had Jen and Max film the video of their "family" as a joke, specifically to make fun of the show, with no intention of submitting it, and then have Jen's sister Ali submit it, also as a joke, but then have things spiral out of control. Equally unbelievable was the way Jen spilled her guts about the whole fake family thing on a live stream. I, as a screenwriter, would've had the information somehow leak out without Jen's consent. Then, she could've done the heartfelt "real" video at the end, and fans could've responded to the authenticity of that.

I wanted to like this movie. I thought the actors gave good performances. It wasn't a bad movie per se. It just wasn't a great movie. The script definitely needed polishing and the romance definitely needed to be developed much more than it was. With a few tweaks, it could've risen from passable movie to a really good one.

One of the worst Hallmark Christmas movies ever made
bishopclisa18 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The lead actress talked so low and mumbled so much, that I had to turn on the closed captioning in order to understand what she was saying. Between that and her pained, pinched expression she wore throughout the movie, it made it one of the worst Hallmark Christmas movies that I have ever watched; and I watch every Christmas movie every year. I couldn't see what the lead actor saw in the lead actress, as there was nothing loveable about her. Losing your father at a young age and having your mother remarry a few times, while painful and distressing, should not be that traumatic to affect every area of your life for so many years. Get some therapy and get over yourself already.

Worst Hallmark movie ever
pepperchop29 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't believe Hallmark would not see what a terrible actress Clair Bowen is in this movie. She just makes these weird faces and gestures to things. She is so stiff and unnattural. Its hard to believe she is an experienced actor. It was hard to watch. Actually, as weird as this sounds, I watched the whole movie, because I couldn't believe how terrible the acting was. The sister would have been a much better cast. The plot of the movie is shallow and not very believable. Surprised that Hallmark would base a Christmas show on the main characters lying and deceiving to win a prize. With all the great actors in the Hallmark lineup, they should have passed on Clair.

#Annoying
SunnyDaise16 December 2023
This movie is very social media based, even the opening credits, which is clever and annoying in equal measures ... but I had to give up when they crept about to not wake the baby, whilst jabbering away at each other in loud voices. Like the internet, there were so many words swirling around, most with no real meaning. I'm sure the movie probably gets better, but there was too much setting the social media feel and not enough connecting with reality for me to get into it. In a way that felt fake, but sadly it happens too much in life - all to often we get so distracted by the digital world and forget what's going on right around us.

Smart, funny, and very different
VetteRanger26 November 2022
When I say this movie is very different, I don't mean it dodged ALL of the normal Christmas movie tropes. It didn't. In fact, this is the SECOND script this season to feature a local business with a fake online profile. However, this one was MUCH better done than the first one we saw.

Most of this style of plot are take-offs on Barbara Stanwick's old standard, Christmas in Connecticut.

First of all, we had many audible chuckles and one laugh out loud moment. The dialogue between the sisters is clever and surprising. Clare Bowen's portrayal of a worried, uncomfortable, neurotic female lead is entertaining, convincing, and funny. Her takes in response to certain situations and dialogue are constantly amusing. A movie with lines this smart and funny is worth your time, and we'll be watching it again in coming years.

Worst Hallmark Movie
juliefolden31 December 2022
I don't even know where to begin. Lets begin with the horrible storyline. Let's lie and think it's ok, as long as it gets us what we want and think it won't come out in the end. It irritates me to think we would buy into that plot. Horrible acting - overdone or amateurish. Timing was off - long, weird pauses between sentences, script was lame, no chemistry between lead characters. Should I go on, or do you get the point? Hallmark is really going downhill fast. Values and morals do make a good story. Hallmark needs to fire the writers and go back to what made them loved. I wouldn't spend your time watching this as it was wasted time that I can never get back.

It's so entertaining!!

Warning: Spoilers
There is so much that I loved about the movie script and the actors! Brant never fails to deliver; however, Clare also delivered a great performance as well as the supporting actors. This was not a typical feel good Hallmark movie but instead showed a very realistic side of a mother-daughter relationship that sorely was need in repair and a woman (Clare) who lacked self-worth. But the storyline delivered in so many ways. The humor was really great and helped balance the drama of the movie. The chemistry between Brant and Clare was spot on and the ending was sweet. I will watch #XMAS over and over again. Thanks Hallmark!

What is Clare Bowen doing now?
perogy417 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to this movie. It's feature actors were a pleasant surprise to come across, as there hasn't been much promotion of this movie on W network.

Most unfortunately, it appears Ms. Bowen has been typecast as the miserable, troubled soul that works hard to push away love and companionship for one reason or another, just as we witnessed for years on Nashville. Her suitor accepted this and was a real trooper, but this is Hallmark, so of course. Suspend your disbelief for a couple hours - even though a fellow with his looks, patience and personality wouldn't have hung around in real life.

The lies she told on social media are cringeworthy because you just know this whole act will end in a massively publicized flame-out, and in reality anyone who knows anything about social media knows the permanence of the internet and why it needs to be treated carefully.

#Xmas (2022) -

I have said it a lot lately and while some of it may be in jest, a lot of it is too true, these girls just aren't good enough for these guys and I don't know if it's a bad script, bad actor or bad direction, because the characters and portrayals of the men constantly outshine those by the leading ladies. Obviously I wouldn't have mentioned that if this film wasn't a prime example of a character that was incredibly flawed and almost beyond redemption. And quite often the leading couple in this one didn't even seem suited to each other either. Max was way out of Jen's league, because Brant Daugherty (Max) might possibly be the hottest man I've ever seen? He did seem a bit more like a Gay Best Friend to start with though, because I really couldn't see them together as anything else.

I would certainly struggle to fall asleep if I was lying next to him on a bed and I wouldn't freak out if he kissed me, I'd melt in to his arms instead. I certainly felt that his heart was more in it than hers too. She didn't even seem to realise that there was an attraction on either ones part.

But who thought that the tartan jacket would look good on him?

It was clear that Like Mother, like daughter, Jen was quite frankly a B!tch.

I preferred her online persona Jen T, who at least appeared a bit more normal.

She put up obstacles for everything, just because her dad died decades before. I mean get over it! She was properly broken and awkward, whiney, annoying and selfish.

I did like the step dad though, he was natural and kind, a pleasant character, although his role was quite small.

With regards to the plot, I found it farcical, as these pretence ones always are and their attempt to create massive events in just hours was more than a little bit hard to believe.

It didn't help that they were trying to impress Zoe and Charlie, an internet sensation and a couple who were clearly doomed from the start. Mostly because Zoe was vile too, but also because they were obviously mismatched.

Anyone who knows me will not be surprised that I only watched it all the way through because of Brant, without his strong leading and kind character, the film was just a couple of annoying sisters and their Mum, which you can see on any day, in any town, in any Primark.

5/10.

#monotone movie
hallmarkmov6 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Jen has no emotions. This movie is just her mumbling throughout every scene, saying how she is freaking out, not reacting to anyone around her, and seems to hate being in this movie. Most of the side characters seem to try so hard to make this movie work and Jen just stands there like a brick, then whines and complains about freaking out as everyone else is trying to help her and save this dying store that she for some reason opened? Her job is decorator but she opened a store? Her sister gave up a high paying job to open this store with her and she seems to be the owner of the store. The fake posts were one thing, then the visit got crazier and crazier, and Jen doesn't change at all. The mom should have been the main character as she's the only one who knows how to act in this ridiculous story. The dance someone comes together by magic. In other movies this would require a whole town to help pulling all of this off but in this one who puts it together?! No idea! Also doesn't this town know these two people very well and no one is surprised they are not married or have a kid? It's very weird. The climax of the movie turns out to be Jen confronting her mom and again a huge monologue of a mumbling mess, but this shouldn't have been the main point of the movie. The storyline is not clear, just a bunch of random arguments between various characters set infront of thousands of Christmas lights. The kid looks way too big to not be able to talk, so the whole mama thing to give away the lie was a stretch. Jen's acting is very hard to watch, monotone with exaggerated facial expressions, no voice change, even when she's out in the cold with her fake shivering voice. You could replace the dialogue with blah blah blah and there would be no difference.

Unexpectedly CUTE!
HallmarkJenny28 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The charisma and layers this movie contained blew me away! Finally, a depiction of social media as a tool for a modern-day small business and not a sell-out of your true self. All of the women in this movie were thoughtful, quirky, and boss girls! The romance in this movie was both messy and picture-perfect.

Summary: Jen's interior design store needs business and her store's social media page needs followers. When a major design brand, HyggeAtHome, launches a family Christmas traditions contest that could change the store's trajectory, Jen pretends her best friend, Max, is her husband and her nephew is her song. The perfect Holiday family! Soon, Jen and Max begin to wish their pretend life was their reality.

"I don't have to worry what my life is gonna be anymore 'cause it kinda just suddenly is." -Jen.

MeetCute: Jen and Max are best friends. Jen is an aspiring interior designer influencer with an "in-the-red" interior design store. Max takes quality pictures for Jen's social media handle. Max compares Jen to a "peanut-butter cookie" and Jen compares Max to a "sugar cookie." It seems that Max is very into Jen, but Jen is completely oblivious and only sees Max as a friend.

They dated for 6 months in college, but broke up because they wanted different things. Jen does not think she wants kids due to her childhood trauma watching her mother chase love, leaving her feeling unloved.

Setting: Astoria, Oregon The town is covered in snow with tasteful, cheery Christmas trees and decorations lining the streets and main street stores.

Jen's store is called JEN. UINE décor with a store description: Reclaim, Restyle, Redecorate . The store has Gorgeous Christmas trees, décor and gift-wrapping.

When influencers Charlie and Zoe are coming to stay with Jen and "her family", Jen uses her Mom and new husband's home rental as her house. It is a giant white, modern house, so she and her real family and friends decorate for Christmas, which includes her late Dad's stocking and tree-topper as well as pictures of Jen and Max's real memories together.

Family Influencer Contest Sponsored by: @HyggeAtHome #HyggeHolidays

The winner receives a brand crossover with the Hygges (Danish-word for Cozy), monthly spreads in their magazines, features in their social platforms, and working as a resident designer for HyggeAtHome.

Jen does not want to apply because she does not believe her face should be on the camera. She maintains a fantastic page for her store, but it does not have many followers or influence.

"You need more eyeballs on your, a bigger digital presence." "Exposure from a major brand takes your online influence to the next level."

Jen's objections to applying for the Family Influencer Contest for decorators and designers are:

Jen is not a runway model Husband with a man-bun Children you can introduce to royalty 100,000 followers that Hygge At Home can turn into subscribers "They want 'Jen T: successful business woman.' They want aspirational, inspirational, unattainable." Jen's sister then suggests she transform into Jen T.

Jen T. Makes a video that makes it to the Top 20 Finalists and her story page follower counts triples and they make $2,000 in online sales overnight!

When she makes it to the Top 10, she is climbs to 50k, 60k, 100k, then 120k, then 400k followers and more store sales.

The spillover comes to Max's Photography page after he is tagged! His follower count dramatically increases up to 50k and he gets offers from major businesses.

Decorating the Christmas Tree: Decorating the Christmas Tree Jen and Max cutely decorate the little baby tree for baby Reed's room.

When decorating their "fake" house, the whole family and Max decorate a real Christmas Tree that her Mom's husband cut down, throwing his back out in the process. The tree is festively decorated in blue, gold and silver while her Mom serves them Christmas Drinks. Max places their later Father's Christmas Tree Topper on top of the tree.

Ending Kiss: Jen is onstage at the Town Dance giving a live-stream speech when she admits that it's all been fake and "Jen T" is not real.

Max is furious because Jen does not believe in them as a coupe and tells her "I have never not loved you." -Max

Jen learns that she needs to love herself as Jen"

"Maybe I needed to let go of who I thought I was to become who I was always meant to be." -Jen

As the real Jen, Zoe and Charlie give her a spot in their Hygge at Home's spring issue.

Jen gives Max a photobook gift of her photos of him, just like the one Max gifted Jen.

Jen tells Max her loves her and he quickly reaches to kiss her. He takes a selfie posts it, and hashtags Xmas.

This film has this weird frenetic energy and coupled with the fake life and social media...I was unable to enjoy it.
cgvsluis30 October 2023
What I loved most about this film...all the great curly hair styles! It really was the best thing about the film. I enjoyed seeing Anna Van Hooft, who played the new mom and very tired sister Ali. I think she and the supporting cart did a wonderful job.

I really had trouble with the storyline. I don't understand the attitude of the main character...nor her hang ups and all because her mom remarried after her dad died?!?!? She doesn't want to have her photo taken yet everything she does is on social media. Her voice didn't ring true. She wants people to know that no one is perfect and she goes about that by pretending to be perfect and then decides she likes that "perfect" life. Weirdest mixed message ever.

The other problem was the strange frenetic energy and the way the lines were delivered by the lead. If I was Max, played beautifully by Brant Daugherty, I would have run the other way. He could do better and deserves someone who loves and treats him like he treated Jen.

Jen Z, gag! I am sure someone thought that was funny...but it is a miss for me.

One character ruined this for me!

The storyline is alright (although lies and deceptions are somewhat made ok??) and the set and vibes are nice, BUT THE LEAD ACTRESS ruined it all with her bad bad acting. It's so terrible to say but I cringed every time I had to look at her speak or do a movement. I don't understand the reviews on here praising her (is it her gorgeous hair perhaps?)!?

I can't fault anyone else in this movie and it's so sad that one character can bring down such a potentially good Christmas movie. I did finish the whole thing cause I was hopeful for a turn but the turn never happened. The ending got cut short as well and the last 20mins felt like a budgeted movie (it may have been but it seemed so obvious).

All in all, I enjoyed a lot of scenes with such beautiful Christmas decorations but it was pretty much it (+ the dead handsome "Max").
